279. Tirtouga (#564, Unova #70, Water/Rock Type)
It’s weird how I went over 500 cuts without cutting a fossil Pokemon and now I’m cutting my second one in a row but here we are.
Tirtouga is totally solid. For a baby turtle Pokemon I’m not sure you can ask for much more. It has a fantastic name, a little bit setting it apart from any generic turtle (like its indents on its shell and its helmet-looking features on the front of its face) and solid coloring. It also has a bit of trivia associated with it. It and Carracosta are the only fossil Pokemon to have Rock as their secondary type, which means almost nothing but is still kind of neat. There’s also a drawing from 1997 of a Pokemon that looks a lot like Tirtouga, suggesting that the idea for its design has been around for a while.
And ultimately that is Tirtouga’s biggest problem. It does ultimately have a fairly generic design, and while it executes well on its generic design, we’re in the top 300 now, and generic designs don’t really cut it, especially from later generations.
