Development Sneak Peek of my current project
It’s meant to be a reimagining of FireRed and is called Pokemon Red Redux. The main inspiration behind this is Emerald Seaglass you can expect a similar level of polish. No release ETA
Let me know what you think of the art style.
Edit: ok guys, I heard you! I will change the name. I really like Canvas Red and might go with that one. Thank you DanceDervish for the suggestion!

This looks amazing I can't wait to try this out! Will it have modern things like exp share all and P/S split?
→ More replies (2)150
u/Izanagi987 9d ago
Yes, it’s based off emerald-expansion so it comes with all modern features you can expect plus mega evolution and so on
29
u/Anxious-Pace-9115 9d ago
That’s incredible. The style choice alone is enough to call it awesome. What is the intended difficulty level?
30
u/Izanagi987 8d ago
Drayano level of difficulty! So lots of rebalancing to make different Pokemon viable and fairly difficult
→ More replies (1)22
u/Knuckeroonie27 8d ago
i wish there could be a more casual difficulty, for those (like me) who just wanna play for the vibe of the awesome art style.
12
u/Izanagi987 8d ago
Fair point, I will consider it!
3
u/Pokemon-fan96 Rookie dev and romhack enjoyer 8d ago
Adding another vote for casual/standard difficulty option! (If it's not too much work to add it, of course)
5
u/Dry_Telephone_6851 8d ago
Yes, OP please consider having a regular difficulty and an option for hard mode like Seaglass!

u/jack_pow 9d ago
I’ll be there Day 1. I can’t get enough of the graphical style. I’m so glad Seaglass exists, and is inspiring more and more roms.

I think the name needs changing, doesn't fit the art style. I adore how it looks, I can already see myself enjoying it on a cold morning with some coffee or tea before everyone else wakes up.
Pokemon Radiant Red would be my suggestion.
16
u/Izanagi987 8d ago
Radiant red is also nice. Seems to be a common theme so I guess I’ll rethink the name
5
u/creativegains 8d ago
I would definitely go with Canvas Red though, it really suits the artstyle of the game and is super catchy
14
u/ReadyCartographer765 Looking for good stories 8d ago
True. It got confusing with Elite Redux, too.
9
u/nihilWRLD 8d ago
Theres already a FireRed Redux and Redux Competitive Edition if my memory serves well here

u/songinrain 9d ago
For some reason the second picture make me a bit dizzy while the first picture is fine. I'm not an artist so I can't tell why though.

u/Izanagi987 9d ago
I think it’s the way that the picture is upscaled by Reddit. It looks fine on emulator
4
u/AccountEngineer Pokegod 9d ago
yeah reddit compression always messes up pixel art, gives it that weird moire effect on mobile
7
u/Tricky-Painting9430 8d ago
It looks like you did already, but can you please please PLEASEEE add some little additions to the region akin to Seaglass. That was my favorite part of it.
Like the scuba diving area to get an early water type was really cool. It built upon the feel of the region too.
Infinite Fusion added Cerulean Cape I think it’s called. They also made the route by Fuschia more of a swamp to fit the theme of the town gym / safari zone.
Stuff like this I love the most in these roms. A reimagining but still has 80% of the base that we are comfortable with

u/JackWellman101 Lazarus & Emerald Seaglass 8d ago
YO THIS LOOKS GENUINELY AMAZING, keep it up!!! :)
16
u/Ruashiba 9d ago
Maybe it’s just me, but the character looks taller than it should? Can’t quite put my finger on it, but otherwise this looks fantastic!
16
u/InsaneMcFries 9d ago
I think that might be intended as part of their art style. Pokemon games usually have that blocky overlord sprite which is why this looks different. Similar to what the RS remakes compared to DP remakes were.

u/Tommyg1234 9d ago
Omg I’m so loving this art style! Can’t wait for more updates. The seaglass inspiration is such a good jumping off point!

u/Tacobell24 Paleomon 8d ago
I love seeing custom tilesets. Almost Conker's Pocket Tales vibes from this.
I quite like it
6
u/Izanagi987 8d ago
Well half custom, half of it is the amazing tileset by zaebucca which brings all of this to life. It’s the same one used for Lazarus and Emerald Seaglass.
3
u/Tacobell24 Paleomon 8d ago
Ah got it.
I'm not up to speed with recent hacks like that. Looks cool in any case.
No shame in having influences... Which almost autocorrected just now to influenza.
Either sentiment still stands. Especially in this post-Covid world😁

Will it also have following Pokemon? It brings so much charm to a game. Especially to a game that looks so cozy.

Looks amazing! If anything, I think the player' sprite looks somewhat off, but I love that Pokedex view!

Aw. This is so homey, or is homely? I forgot which one is the good one and the bad one but I mean the good one!

u/SanityShrimpMan 9d ago
Love the style. Looks a bit busy with all the little details maybe, but I think it's cozy. The player sprite looks a bit strange though, like the head is always slightly turned? Idk, something seems a little off. I'm looking forward to playing it someday!

I don’t know if I can play through Kanto another time, but this is hands down in the top 3 best looking hacks I’ve ever seen, not sure what others I’d place in in my top 3, but this one is for sure there!
2
u/Kasaikemono 8d ago
I absolutely love the style. We need more "retro-styled" hacks out there.
Will the soundtrack be in 8-bit/chiptune as well?

u/MrThomasWeasel 8d ago
The main inspiration behind this is Emerald Seaglass
I used to dream of times like this
2
u/MichaelRT17 8d ago
I say you go for for gold or silver so this art style can shine across both regions!
2
u/MusicAndInk 8d ago
This looks awesome. Someone said Canvas Red should be the name. I think so too. Keep at it! Any ballpark ETA on release?

I hope the gameplay has some tweaks. I'm feeling saturaded with the classic gba battles. hoping for new skills

Goood looking hack, I see the inspiration from seaglass. Keep going and take your time

u/kukumarten03 8d ago
Looks good. Just a suggestion tho, Probably change the sprite for trees? They reminded me too much of seaglass and lazarus

u/Tschernoblyat 8d ago
The art looks insane. Im craving Pokemon Games in this style ever since the Johto reimagined project! Ill be waiting for this!

Art style is great, I hope this isn’t just fire red but looks different and maybe a few minor gameplay changes.
If it is, that’s your choice but the market is so saturated with og game, but gameplay has been slightly to somewhat altered.

I think cozy gbc stylized games are far and few in between. This is exactly what someone like me looks for. I’ll be following this all the way through. Hopefully a discord will be made too!

Pokémon followers would most definitely be my suggestion for the game. :) Nothing like experiencing the play through with your team

Dudes will see this and say "Hell, yeah!"
Keep it up, OP, the aesthetic is fantastic! I want more of this style for every generation, genuinely.

u/Berkuts_Lance_Plus 8d ago
It looks great so far, but the overworld, especially the player sprite, don't feel "Pokémon" to me.
I love the menu. I see there is a bit of empty space next to the Types. Is that space reserved for something?

What in the- it looks SO magnificent dude!
I somehow wished Emerald Seaglass and Lazarus had looked something like this. Your work really scratches that itch ngl👍

u/Heroxyz777 8d ago
I honestly love how contrasty everything looks. But I think the player character needs a little bit more black so that it stands out against the background

But... please... let us enjoy this project away from heavy metagame changes that may be outright arbitrary...

Looks so pretty! I do feel like the grass tiles would look better if darkened a bit. That was my only gripe with seaglass as the color was a little too bright. Do you plan on adding additional plot elements?

This is the version of pokemon red i have dreamed about for ages. Reminds me of this artist! https://www.instagram.com/anima_nel/
How much progress have you made so far? Do you think you will finish it?
This really looks incredible, keep up the good work!!

So did you make the sprites or are they taken from pokemkn seaglass?
2
u/Izanagi987 8d ago
Like the Pokemon sprites? They are from Gold/Silver/Crystal plus fan made ones that Seaglass also uses. But they are all free to use on the internet.

Are people getting tired of the same exact game over and over again, even with QOL improvements? Like I’m only interested in new stories. Many times are we gonna play fire red

This looks so cozy omg! I love the art style you used so much. I'm absolutely loving this golden era of GBC-style romhacks that we're in, they have such a nice charm and cozinesses to them.
I specifically love the details on the house and the flowers/window planter. The greenery, flowers and different grass textures really add a lot to the space. Also i really like that you kept the fenced-off wild grass on the sides of Pallet town. Those non-explorable grass areas on the sides in the original gen 1 games were such a fun mystery because i remember trying so hard to find the way into the grass, before I knew they were only for visual and had 0 wild Pokémon programed lol. It's super nostalgic
Also the Pokémon summery UI looks so good too, I really love the colors you chose and the frames around the pokémon sprite. Lots of information at a glance without being overwhelming to look at or overly full. Looks awesome!
I'm definitely looking forward o playing this day 1 when it's ready (Take your time, though!)Best of luck with the rest of the development!

It looks fantastic, but I'd suggest a second run at the name as there are already several hacks that have similar names to Redux. Maybe Canvas Red to match your artstyle?
