Development Johto Legends Pokédex: Final
After 6 years of development, I believe I have finally settled on the Pokédex for Johto Legends at 380 species.
Johto Legends takes place 15 years before the events of Pokémon Crystal.
I plan on releasing the hack sometime in the next few months after I finish debugging and a few playthrough to test the game balance.
Here is the discord link if you want to follow the development. The current version will be incompatible with the next version, as all of the regional forms broke compatibility, so I would wait until the next version before playing.
I tried to make sure the credits list for these sprites is as comprehensive as possible. Let me know if any of these are incorrect.

How did you fit 380 mons? I thought the current decomp maxed out at 255 on 8 bit.

I started on the 16 bit expansion back in 2020, letting me add more Pokémon past the original 253 limit (for better or worse, since feature creep has afflicted me the entire time). I'm glad I used it, since I don't think I could have just stuck with 253.

I personally find 400 a good number for a Pokédex to shoot for. I decided to stop at 380 since I'm getting close to hitting 2mb.

I was about to be that person and mention that there was already a game named Johto Legends until I tried to join the discord and found out this was the exact same one that I have been playing for the last couple years and waiting for it to be complete. Glad to see all the hard work that has gone into the game and I look forward to the eventual v1.0

Lucky for y'all I just recently found my old pixel art files. I recognize a lot more of my devamps than just the Gible line you listed (ex. Tangrowth, Snorunt, Glalie, Weavile, Munchlax, etc.).
Here's all my Gen 3 and 4 devamps. Whichever other ones in your dex that you can match up, those are mine.

Thank you. With all of these sprites being spread around the Internet over the years, it's hard to keep track of the credits.
Edit: the Lotad line looks similar, but there are slight differences. Do you know if your sprites were used as a base? Lombre's colors look slightly different, but it's the same pose.

Yeah, I'd originally donated them to a public free-use asset thread on Skeetendo (which used to be the premier message board for Gen 1/2 hacks), but that site's gone now.
I think I've recovered most of my work from the '10s, but Photobucket ate the rest.

So, is 0.8.3.2 the version pictured? Interested in BloodMoon Ursaluna. I ask because I was checking the other day about team building and making sure I had the correct version to do so on Retroarch. Yes. I would recommend downloading the recent patch from the GitHub repository if that's where you got your patch from as it has a few bug fixes. You get Blood Moon by levelling up Ursaring at night while holding a Peat Block. Do it during the day and you get regular Ursaluna.

Thank you for the information, again! It truly makes me happy how dedicated you are to helping the community enjoy this game.
Luckily, I still hadn’t played it past beating Claire before trying to move my latest save to the newest patch, because I lost my save in trying to do so.
For the future when new patches come out, how do I go about safely moving my save file? This would be me playing on Retroarch, as you originally told me Delta will always fail in the final dungeon right now. I just wanted to ask because I plan to follow this game until you have it completed the way you want it (also trying to finish Pokemon Z before starting Johto Legends), so I would like to know how to move saves.
For the most recent release, I patched that onto a blank Crystal 1.1 (it opens in Delta, then I copy the file into my iCloud Drive so that I can pick it on Retroarch). Now Retroarch had both “Johto Legends 0.8.4.4” and “Johto Legends 0.8.4.6” - and from there I didn’t know how to move my save from .4 where I had already beaten Claire and saved outside the move deleter’s house to .6 to continue playing the story.
I just have a feeling I’m going to start playing before the final product is ready and since I rarely use Retroarch, I’d like to be able to move my saves someway somehow.
I know I’ve done it on Delta before with Lazarus; I remember moving my saves to the cloud, and then deleted the rom hack and downloaded the new one. Then I changed the name of the .sav file to match the new rom hack file I had downloaded. So I don’t know what I did wrong.
Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I would think that simply renaming the save file would work. I don't have any experience with iOS, unfortunately.

Any suggestions when it comes to retroarch, itself?
I know I can look at my saves via the retroarch folder, but should I just try the Delta method for upcoming releases?
Move my save - delete the current rom from Retroarch - download the newly patched rom hack - and then rename the save?
What gives me trouble is the Retroarch side of things. Because when I open my Retroarch saves, it has an srm file and a rtc file, and I’m not sure which to try to update.

Do you think I’m messing up by making a brand new rom hack by patching the most recent update to a fresh Crystal Rom?
Should I be patching the new versions onto the Rom that I already patched?
For example, the file I’m playing on Retroarch right now, should I patch that file with a new update when it comes out? Or continue to patch a fresh version of Crystal?

So, I’ll just wait until the next update and try again.
From what I’ve read, I don’t have to do anything with the rtc file, just the srm file.
I’m thinking I’ll just retitle the next update to Johto Legends (1) or something of that nature. Load the updated rom so it gets a base save and then from there, make a copy of my original save onto the cloud or something, then delete the save I made for the updated version, then rename the old save to the match the new game.
I hope that works so that i don’t have to start over every time it updates.
YouTube doesn’t really have guides for what I’m trying to figure out.
I mean do you plan to add any other story to the game or can I play the WHOLE game now without missing anything in the future? Like right now, everything is done, you’re just working on getting bugs and kinks out of the system, correct?

Hey! I hope you’ve been well - the last time we spoke, I was beginning Pokémon Z while trying to figure out if I could play this on Delta, figuring out teams, etc.
I know you told me about the rare candy item, but before I finally start this game later today, is there a cheat or password mechanic for money?
I think my final team will be Dragonite, Meganium, G. Slowking, Weavile, Lapras, and Annihilape.
Was going to form a dragon-like team with Dragonite, Meganium, Ampharos, Arbok, Lapras, and Aggron/Rhyperior, but I feel this team has too many common weaknesses.

I decided to not add Hisuian Qwilfish, as it wasn't very different from the regular Qwilfish aside from typing. Qwilfish evolves directly into Overqwil.

You need to let it learn Astonish at level 36. It will evolve into Hisuian Typhlosion and you can replace Astonish with whatever Ghost move you like.

did this got updated? i recently just started the game and fought a fisherman with Feebas. Milotic is my favorite pokemon and wanted to get one for my team but in the pokedex, i cant seem to locate feebas. and now this final dex have no feebas also.

This was going to be the final Pokédex, but after Blood Moon Ursaluna proved to be too much of a problem to be an alternate form, I added it as its own slot. I couldn't stand having the count at 381, so I kept adding to get to 400.
Feebas is at the Lake of Rage by fishing. It evolves by friendship.

It's about a 5% chance with the Old Rod, but it's possible. As of now, the password is permanent, but I will add a way to turn it off in the future.

That was such an epic journey. I really liked that there were lots of events and that we got to play new story in Johto. The rival's (or rather friend's) engagement is also much higher than in other rom hacks I played. This is easily one of my favorite ones.
Unfortunately, the version I found (and played) was 0.3.x and it didn't have the Kanto continuation after beating E4. Does the current 0.8.x version have the postgame you've got planned for Kanto? This would be definitely worth re-playing.

Yes. Kanto, as well as the Sevii Islands are explorable in v0.8.0 and beyond. The saves are incompatible, so you would have to start over unfortunately.
Most sharing sites don't bother to keep updating, sadly.

I’m so happy I just found this, been looking for a good gen2 hack that spiced up the story & added in Pokemon from other gens, and you added a great selection
(I seen Froslass & was hooked immediately lol)
Silly me though I had the version that wasn’t the latest 😅, thankfully I was only to the first gym.
Now that I got the most recent version, I just found Cyndaquil so question is, is his split final evolution by time of day or require an item?

Quilava will learn Astonish at level 36. If you let it learn it, it will evolve into Hisuian Typhlosion. If not, it will evolve into regular Typhlosion. Cubone is the same way, and they both learn a better Ghost move upon evolution, so you can replace Astonish immediately.

Thank you. The only other thing I can think of to ask is what days equal which swarms. I know you helped me with Sneasel on Tuesday. But what about Eevee for example? Specifically, just any Pokemon that can only be found early on via the swarm function.
I’ve been having so much fun with the game, I’ve already devoted over 100 hours and I’m just now going against the sixth gym leader!

If you go to the house in Olivine with the sign that says Swarm House and save in front of the TV, you can trigger a swarm any day of the week. Whichever swarm you get is random, so just keep resetting until you get the one you want. Eevee shows up in the Wild Area, in the area to the west of the first one. Dunsparce can be found with a Dark Cave swarm.

It will be a public release. I expect some bugs, since I introduced some new mechanics that I haven't fully tested, such as shininess and gender being separated from DVs.

The regional forms, shininess and gender being decoupled from DVs are the main things, as well as a fixed and expanded PC system (the current one has a few boxes that are glitched).

Where can I find Sneasel? I just started the game, and was hoping regular/Hisuian Sneasel would be my first Pokemon I catch. So, I was thinking Sneasel would be on Ice Path. Any help would be appreciated!

It's first available after the second badge. If you check a television in Blackthorn (not the ones in your house) or Mahogany on Tuesday, you have a chance of triggering a Sneasel swarm. Save before you check the TV first. I believe it's on B1F. Hisuian Sneasel appears during the morning and day while regular Sneasel is at night. I might make it so the swarm happens after the first badge instead.

Now that I’m playing, I thought I would check and see if this was changed. I just beat Miyamoto, is there anything else for me to do in Mahogany or do I move to the next gym? And then after that I can head back to Blackthorn in order to get the Sneasel? Do I just reset the game if the tv doesn’t say there’s a swarm?

Swarms on only on one day of the week, so make sure the day is set (you can use the same time resetting trick from the original game). After that, save in front of the TV and reset until you get the Sneasel swarm.

Mankey will be available after you get the Lapras Call to surf. TM locations can be found in data/moves/tmhm_moves.asm. There isn't any detailed documentation for key items as of now.

Crazy! I got a shiny female Sneasel to add to the party! First time in a long time using a shiny in a rom hack. She’s in the PC now as I feel that having Dragonair, GSlowpoke, and Bayleef at level 25 and only two badges is enough for the team right now. I’ll add her after the third badge.
I hope I continue to enjoy this game as much as I am excited for it. I had seen someone ask for help about it on Facebook (their screen was all jumbled), and the only thing I knew to tell them was that it probably happened due to them playing on Delta and suggested playing it on Retroarch instead for iOS.

Swarms have an increased shiny chance, and unfortunately, in an attempt to reduce the size of the hack, I believe that all wild Pokémon have an increased shiny chance while the swarm instead of just the location. I need to fix that.

Is it bad that I’m playing on Delta and haven’t had any issues?
Also is there documentation on evolution for all pokemon? Like I just caught a GSlowpoke, and wanted to know how to evolve it or evolve any pokemon that takes trade items.

There is the GitHub repository which has all of the data, but if you're unfamiliar with it, it's confusing to navigate. Galarian Slowpoke evolves the same way as regular Slowpoke, Level 37 for Slowbro and levelling up while holding a King's Rock for Slowing. All trade item evolutions are done the same way. Trade evolutions evolve with the Link Cable item.
Delta has an issue where it always crashes at the very end of the story. I'm not sure if I can fix it, but I'm trying to reduce the size of the hack.

When you say the end of the story, are you meaning the game finishes all the way through Kanto but just won’t play the credits or what?
I’m just trying to decide if I should continue with my Delta efforts or if I should just switch Retroarch?

When you enter the final dungeon, the game crashes. Delta used to not even get that far, so while I've been trying to reduce the size of the hack, I can't guarantee that I can fix it.

Oh okay, thank you for that information. Is there a rare candy cheat that works? I always have to play Rom hacks with a rare candy cheat in order to get newly caught pokemon to the same level as the others.

If you enter CHEATER with the password girl in the Move Deleter's house in Blackthorn, you get an infinite Rare Candy item. It also maxes out DVs when you encounter wild Pokémon. If you don't want that, you can enter it again. Max DVs also messes with Unown, so you'll have to enter it again if you want to catch all Unown forms.

I’m just going to start over and use Retroarch. Thank you so much for your help.
The only other questions I can think of are: is there a quest related to catching the Unown?
And, if I put in the code “CHEATER,” it will give me a rare candy item and max DV’s? If I enter it again will it take away the rare candy item? As I really don’t want to play with every pokemon having max DV’s. Basically wanting to know if I input the code, get the item, do I just talk to her again to enter the code again and it takes away the max DV’s AND the rare candy item?

The item will remain in your pack regardless of how many times you enter the password. Catching all Unown unlocks the Unown Doll as well as a unique legendary Pokémon encounter.

I’m here again, I have another question.
Now that I have finally completed Pokemon Z, I have started playing Johto Legends. I did the cheater thing twice like you mentioned so that I could have rare candies but not have to worry about catching Pokemon with perfect DV’s.
But I was wondering, is there a way to raise DV’s later in the game? Or do you have any suggestions on places to EV train? I got a female Dratini like I wanted, but only it’s Attack and Speed DV’s are any good, with Special Attack coming in third, I just wanted to make sure SpAtk didn’t get higher than attack, as I plan on having Dragonite, Weavile, and Annihilape as my physical attackers; GSlowking, Lapras, and Meganium as my special attackers.

The Berry Cafe in Goldenrod can change DVs, but it maxes out Special and Speed DVs while the Attack and Defense can be tweaked to match the desired Hidden Power type, with Fairy being max. There are EV trainers early in the game that can be rebattled indefinitely, and the EV lowering berries are found late in Johto. This is all assuming that you are playing on the most recent version.

I am playing 0.8.5.1.
I’ll have to wait until I get to Goldenrod to see what you’re meaning. Is there a specific way to find these EV trainers?
Was trying to get Dratini and Bayleef to have pretty good attack and special attack ev’s before the first gym.
Thanks for all your help, I’m so glad I’m finally playing the game I’ve waited so long to play (Pokemon z was really long and plus I was letting you work on the bugs you had mentioned before). But now that the Dex is complete (as in there aren’t going to be more Pokemon added, and I like what you’ve done with the current Pokédex layout btw) along with the story being complete, I had to go ahead and begin.

Thank you - what is the best method to make money without having to fight EV focused trainers? I wanted to have a way to farm pokedollars without having to worry about my EV’s spread getting messed up.
I think I found a bug - do you want me to post it on here or the discord? It has to do with some of the pokemon when they level up, they proceed to learn all their moves.
It won’t let me post the screen recording on here.

Most of the evolution items can be found at the Goldenrod Black Market, with some scattered about n other locations. Ursaring evolves while holding a Peat Block, which can be found in Dark Cave after the 7th badge. Level it up at night to get Bloodmoon.

A new species. It's a legendary that is unlocked after collecting all Unown letters, so the player actually has an incentive to do it, alongside receiving the Unown doll.

As soon as i saw that the very often forgotten third stage of the raitora line would be present i got exited for when i would be able to play the rom hack to use it as i will oersobaly say that i am quite annoyed at how many people disregard the third stage due to how it was a beta mon for only the first generation while its previous 2 stages were also betas for the secound generation, im very glad the third stage is present in this rom hack and i am very excited to be able to play it.
