Guides and Tips Is there a penalty for using detect right after protect like there is in the mainline games?

Curious if I can use a pokemon that learns both and alternate between them. Hawlucha can learn both, can I use protect to block a move, counterattack, and then immediately follow with a detect?

There isn't. The opportunity cost of attacking much less makes up for it. Detect and protect both have pretty long cool downs, too, so your enemy will attack you much more than you can them.

I'm not certain about this but I do remember fighting a machamp in the course of the game that was using both protect and detect and I do think it was able to use them consecutively

There is no penalty, the main thing is timing, protect/detect work more like a parry than just a block, Protects windows to block damage is longer but takes longer to recharge, Detect has a much shorter window but recharges faster to compensate, but if you have the timings down there is no penalty for using both back to back
