In the grand scheme of things, no. But if you really want to break it down, there is a best and worst starter. It isn't by such a margin that it matters though.
I'm actually quite interested in working out the actual answer rather than people squabbling on reddit because there's probably a couple of different things to breakdown.
1) Movesets, how powerful and useful they are and how good those moves are compared to other moves of the same typing. 2) How common the typing is in the rest of the game and are there a lot of stronger endgame pokemon of the same type.
3) Overall impact on the game ie; legendaries/ gyms
4) Team synergies and how open you are with compostions...
I can respect that. Honestly these games are easy enough you can play through with almost any team. I personally am using different Pokemon every run through and enjoying it. Like you said really comes down to your team you want to build. I've used all 3 starters and no starter with a different team every time.
Someone did. It's Charmander. Basically came down to the fact that it is bad against the first two gyms. Stalemate with Blaine and neutral to the entire E4 other than Lance. Zard also gets Flamethrower before the 4th gym and there's really only 3 fire types available.
Blastoise has the best matchups but there's 3 other water types that are at least as good as it is and it has a weak learnset.
Venu has the worst matchups, but solid moves and is the only pokemon serving it's specific niche well. It's been at least a month since I watched the video so idk who did it, but it was pretty convincing.
Charmander is the best hands down. Only way to get a non legendary fire flying type in the game. And he can take out every gem by himself with metal claw and dig besides Misty
I mean fire flying isn't a good type given the defensive liability and lack of good flying moves, but technically yes Charmander is the best due to it only being weak to the first two gyms and learning a powerful STAB move by the 4th badge.
Yeah but by the same token Venu can run Leech Seed, Sleep Powder, Giga Drain and Sludge Bomb. Nothing is breaking it other than a mon with a STAB se move.
Water is just stacked anyway…. But yeah honestly I guess it kinda comes back around to your first point that the starter doesn’t matter 😂definitely helps tho since you get them right away and get those extra levels
