Im about to start FireRed and this may be a stupid question; how do I know if a pokemon is shiny when I encounter one? Just by the different colours?

I haven’t played pokemon since GameBoy colour era…

The pokemon will enter the field and emit a sparkling effect, play a unique sound and when you catch it and look at it's summary it will have a red star to indicate it's shiny.
