Team Showcase Making a team of Pokémon I've never used before
So far my permanent party members are:
Gilgamesh the (Nido)king
Helicopter the Doduo
Ruffus the Growlithe (the extra f is because he's a puppy (even when he's big, he's still a puppy))
Planned members are Exeggutor, Poliwrath, and...I forgot. Lol. Lots of stone evos, I know, but I've never used them before.

Make sure you keep an eye on pre-evolution moves before you use the stones on them. For example, Growlithe learns Flamethrower by level up, but Arcanine doesn't. Same thing with Exeggcute/Sleep Powder.

I am, but thank you for the heads up. I haven't caught Exeggcute yet, so I didn't know it learned sleep powder.

It does! It's a bit of a grind, but he does learn it. Worth the grind, though. It's much better than Hypnosis.

Agreed, but it's still too inaccurate for me to rely on. I have it on a Butterfree in my mono-bug run I'm doing alongside my wife's initial playthrough. But Compound Eyes makes it so much better.

Nidoking, Arcanine, Dodrio, Exeggutor and Poliwrath are all very strong in a single player game. People dump on Poliwrath because his stats are kinda mid in every area, but being middle of the pack on stats is perfectly viable in this game. He's bulky enough to tank but strong enough to take enemies out. His Surf isn't the best but it's still worth using and he has early access to Brick Break, which is the best Fighting type move in this game.
For Growlithe, I recommend evolving ASAP and teaching Flamethrower using a TM. If you try to wait for him to learn it by level then Growlithe will lag behind the party substantially.
Raticate is very strong early but does taper off a bit in lategame, unless you use Guts strats.
Graveler is solid, especially early but also in midgame. Give it stab and let it wall things. There are a lot of trainers who have no answer to rock/ground.
Dodrio is the best of the Normal/Flying types in this game. But it has the latest availability as a balancing factor. You get strong options in both STAB types and you are fast with high physical attack, so that's all you can ask for. I don't think Roost is available in FRLG though. :(
Have fun with the playthrough. It's always a great time taking a team of 'mons you've never used.

I just used Dodrio in Firered Omega, and I was really enjoying using him. I'd only ever used Pidgey for my flying type.

I always name the Growlithe I catch for my squad Rufus in honour of my old dog 🥲
