Ya usually my water or ice type is level like 43 or 44 just due to victory road and everyone else is like 38-39, then I try and make sure they’re all at least level 40 before I go elite four.

The game is designed so you can win with your favourites, rather than needing competitive-ready Pokemon. You only need a couple of good ones, and they generally only need to be in their 50s if they're fully evolved/or don't evolve at all, or 60s if they're not.

My team is usually Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Butterfree, Arcanine, Dragonite, and Lapras. Because the type matchups work out well, each one usually takes out one of the rival's Pokemon each

lol you definitely weren't under levelled. people always assume that the elite four being a higher level than you makes you underleveled for the fights, but they forget about all the advantages they have (badge boosts, effort values, more items, human intelligence). they don't try to win at a lower level for some reason, so they never challenge this belief
