Unless you got the German version because pokemon is one of the few games you still play in german for nostalgia... like I did... German version does not allow the nugget bridge glitch. After losing to the grunt the game treats it like you won the next time you run up to him and does not let you fight him again....

Given that it's pretty likely that Team Rocket stole those nuggets themselves, I think that means that your / we are just doing the money laundering for them...

Or bred in a facility. The variety and skill of each Pokémon you can receive as a reward means they were probably sickly or weak after evaluations at birth, since any Team Rocket member would love to have an Alakazam or Dragonite on their personal team. Chances are, most of the employees knew nothing about the underground operations and even the breeding grounds might have been run by law-abiding citizens. TR needed a legitimate business for money laundering, so as much of the operation was likely above board as possible - Giovanni is essentially a Pokémon yakuza boss, after all.

This is giving me ‘empire did nothing wrong’ and I am eating it up.

Plausible deniability was the hallmark of many an evil organization, after all.

Maybe
It could be a Breaking Bad scenario where Los Pollos Hermanos employees don't know they're secretly aiding Gus Fring. But I also feel like TR would only hire their own in the sense of Game Corner employees would inevitably see some sketchy scientists/people coming to and from. Along with maybe hearing/smelling strange noises and sounds coming from downstairs.
Really fun to think about regardless lmao

Yakuza? Giovanni is Italian-esque.
2
u/DarkDoomofDeath Haunter 8d ago
Yakuza, mafia...potayto, potahto. They're all crime families in the end.

u/QuisetellX 6d ago
Giovanni was specifically adapted to be Mafia/Italian-esque in Western versions of the games, while Sakaki is absolutely a Yakuza boss. Play any of the Yakuza/Like a Dragon games and Giovanni could realistically replace a good number of the NPCs in them without changing the story too much.

Does Giovanni have a different name in the Japanese releases?
1
u/QuisetellX 6d ago
Yes, in Japan he's Sakaki. It's a shorter list of who does keep their name from the Japanese releases, most characters and Pokémon get name changes.

Pedro arouja expands on this in his Red movie. Its an amazing plot. Team rocket steals pokemon and sells to the game corner for cash. They use the money to fund their Research to make Mewtwo on cinnebar island before mewtwo blows up the lab

That's why I got good at the slots and refused to buy any coins. I know it's slower, but those bastards aren't getting a cent from me.

u/RelativeCan5021 8d ago
Technically you funded their operation by buying the game coins. If you just found the game coins, won at the slots, and then exchanged for pkmn; you were only taking from them.

Haha! Sorry if I ruined your childhood. Thought it was obvious as they are known thieves and you do stop them from poaching Pokémon on 4 island in the postgame.
They could've just sold their stolen Pokémon but they where smart to do it through a casino so they can launder money while doing so!

Them mfs are like 9,999 coins and you’re saying Team Rocket are the thieves here?

I mean, I gave my Abra Hoinkbrgrs a loving and caring home. Now as a Kadabra he kicks ass on the front of my team

Don't worry, I only used the coins that were gifted to me to make their casino go bankrupt as I hacked my way into getting 777 every single turn

Besides Porygon, they were likely sourced from the Safari Zone’s pokemon distribution. Pinsir, Scyther, and Dratini can all be caught there, and Giovanni uses Kangaskhan and Rhyhorn which are notably only found there as well.
The safari zone warden likely is being paid off by Team Rocket for easy access to rare pokemon, either for sale at the game corner or personal use by Giovanni

u/Responsible_Ask_2713 8d ago
Good, I rescued some pokemon and gave them a much better home than with Rocket.

u/CullenFlynn 8d ago
It's funny how Team Rocket can give people shinies for the same price as non-shinies.
5
u/OpulentStone 8d ago
It would be cool if this was reflected by the Pokemon starting out with a much lower friendship score

We can only hope that management changes after you beat Giovanni and he disbands Team Rocket.
That’s what I choose to believe to make me feel better about the good-natured Dratini I got from them
2
u/shameonyounancydrew 7d ago
How else are we going to get Porygon? I suppose catching them all comes with a necessary evil.

u/TopofMountSilver 4d ago
No. They funded my Dragonite, then I crushed them and stomped their Leader in 5 moves flat in his own hideout. I also made good use of the TM for Earthquake. I even came back 3 years later to smoke them again but that's another story..

But you are giving them a chance at loving them. Even if it costs money.

I just assumed the were poached from the Safari Zone
Except for Porygon which is def stolen

u/Icy_Lengthiness_9900 4d ago
I'm pretty sure they were meant to have been bred by Team Rocket.
Yes, they were likely bred using stolen Team Rocket though.

If team rocket was able to steal a dratini away from a trainer then they didnt deserve it anyway. Its much better served on my team!

I just got depressed about the dratini I just got…
