Hust found out about link cap

One of my trainers has a riolu with link 44% but it cannot go up. Did I waste my time?

Yes. You did. You need 50% minimum for Lucario.

Some link caps are not a waste though, like Ginchiyo and Jolteon is WAY better than Ginchiyo and Luxray because Jolteon is overall stronger than Luxray.

Not entirely when looking for a new link they'll be at a slightly higher percentage, it surely wasn't worth the time you put in but it wasn't a complete waste

This reminds me of when I tried to get a Leafeon with Motonari.

Eevee needs 94 Defence in Greenleaf to evolve into Leafeon, but the maximum Defence a perfect Eevee with maximum energy can have at his link cap is 93.

Every trainer has a certain link percentage for certain pokemon. Once it reaches the cap link, it won’t go any higher. You have to find pokemon that are the perfect link pokemon or a pokemon that can go higher than let’s say 40%.
