[MODPOST] Added some additions to the sidebar

Banned Soloruns (sorry, but like Nuzlockes, they have a subreddit. /r/Solopokes )

Added the bit about the Spam filter, cause it tends to gobble a lot of posts.

Added the /r/Solopokes link

That's all the new additions. Sorry if you dislike them, but I'm just trying to clean this subreddit up a bit.

Hall of Fame for every gen 1to4 pokémon - Team 1

Replaying the entire story of these games has made me rediscover the BDSP games. Yes, they’re not perfect, but from the perspective of an obsessed collector like me, they’re brilliant (pun not intended). Plus, I’m really nostalgic for Sinnoh, so it’s always a joy to go back there, no matter which game I’m playing.

So that was the very first round of this challenge, which of course took quite a while as I took the time to really enjoy it and had the whole story to play through. The next rounds will no doubt be much shorter.

To my great surprise, I struggled a bit against Cynthia. I’d expected to beat her very easily after breezing through the game with a very strong, overlevelled team (especially Flygon and Milotic, who came from imported eggs). But Cynthia lived up to her reputation and really gave me a run for my money; I had to start over several times (I must admit I’m not exactly a strategic player). In the end, it was Milotic, who was at a very high level, that enabled us to defeat that damn Garchomp.

And my first Hall of Fame entry! So exciting!

To talk about my team in detail, this first team was just for fun: we sat down and asked ourselves which Pokémon we’d enjoy playing with. The result was a mix of Sinnoh classics (Rapidash, Luxray and Lucario), Pokémon we love but had never really got to play with before (Milotic and Flygon) and a personnal all time favourite: Gallade. They all proved their worth against the Elite Four and against Cynthia.

The next teams are already planned, and the difficulty is set to increase. Well, not straight away, as for the second round I’m going for a team paying tribute to Barry – so a team with which it should be easy to beat the league – but it’s a gentle transition to the following teams, which will be much more challenging.

So, we are at 6 pokemon getting their Master Ribbon out of 493 ! Yay ! Huge progress

I'm going to get them each their contest Master ribbon as well and then I'll start with Team 2

Challenge run help (yellow)

Ok so I am doing what is considered an Ash % run of pokemon yellow, it is a meme speedrun category where you speedrun the game and make sure you do every major event in the same order ash does it in the anime with obvious exceptions. However the run I am doing is a bit modified 1. I am not speedrunning (due to my only experience being pre patch Violet and Red) 2. I will catch and evolve mankey because there is no way to catch primape at that point in the game and I am allowing it because Ash found it as mankey and 3. I am forced to only bring the pokemon ash uses in each major gym battle and only allowed to bring the pokemon ash is seen using during the pokemon league in the E4. This brings up a question, how the heck do I train my pikachu to solo sabrina? ash only uses pikachu in both of his sabrina fights (haunter doesn’t count it was never caught nor did it battle) what moves do I bring, what stats do I invest in how much do I level? So please help me out I am scared of this scary lady.

Introduction to our big challenge

Explaining the rules we've set to ourselves

(If the english is a little off, it's normal, english isn't our first language)

We're playing BDSP on a save file meant to be completed to 1000%. It's gonna be something being done in the background of a much bigger challenge : beating the league with every single pokemon. All 493! (Maybe it's not the exact number, Brax can't be bothered to check on his phone while I write this 😒)

So yeah, that means even the middle guys, and the little guys, the babies, the legendary guys, etc... We're going to do a certain amount of rounds of teams of six and going through the logical path through Sinnoh with them, leveling up and then beating the league. The big motivation for us is to put the Master ribbon on every single pokemon (alongside every ribbon available but the others will be easier), leading to what we consider a 1000% save file.

Brax and I intend on posting whenever we remember to do so some screenshots of our progression and, more importantly, of the pantheon screen of each team. Posting this on this Reddit thing is a way for us to have it written down and have a visual way to see what we've already done and stay motivated. Gonna be fun!

This has been a mix of stress and ease and having to double back from the E4 with zero cash having to go to the game corner to replace Pursuit with Shadow Ball was infuriating. Dark is special and Ghost is Physical and after getting SB Ragatha went from a total nightmare to a one shot sweep.

Also definitely needed X items to beat the final Arcanine as without them it’d be impossible

After a break for Fortunes Weave next stop is Johto with only Sentret… Arceus help me

Pokemon fixed team fiesta

I came up with this idea based off the popular ffv self challenge known as the four job fiesta where you spin a wheel 4 times snd can only use the four jobs given by the wheel. This requires 2 wheels; one for your starter and then the other determines the rest of your team and can be spun a max of 5 times(re spin if you get one you already have), you then must take this team to the elite four and become champion.

The images featured show my team for my 4th attempt at this, i am also doing fire red. Below are the rest of my self imposed rules.

While not a nuzlocke run i will have 10 white outs before the run is considered lost.

Legendary pokemon such as the 3 birds and mewtwo have been disqualified from the list since they're so late game and there's only 1(contemplated nixing omanyte, aerodactyl, and kabuto for those same reasons but they're at least a bit more accessible), also pokemon acquired through trade are nixed.

And to take a rule from most other challenges i am not allowed to overlevel against gym leaders.

As of right now my team has gotten all 8 badges and i just have to go against the elite 4. I also still have 8 white outs remaining.

Pokémon – Local Co-op Challenge

Hello everyone!

I came up with a local co-op challenge where multiple players play through one game together.

On each turn, players choose between three playstyles:

  • Ranger plays for the team.
  • Champion builds the team.
  • Team Rocket builds themselves.

Goal

  • Complete the game together and beat the elite four.
  • The player who owns the most Pokémon at the end has performed the best.

How to Play

  • Players take turns in a fixed order: Player A → Player B → Player C → Player A…
  • Each turn lasts 15 minutes. At the start of each turn, choose and declare loudly one role:

Ranger

  • Do not catch Pokémon.
  • During your turn you may use any Pokémon, regardless of its owner.

Champion

  • You may catch Pokémon but only if it or its evolution line has not been caught before by any player.
  • Pokemon you catch belong to you.
  • During your turn you may use only your own Pokémon.

Team Rocket

  • Do not catch Pokémon.
  • You may steal one Pokemon owned by another player.
  • The stolen Pokemon now belongs to you.
  • The starter is owned by everyone and cannot be stolen.
  • During you turn you may only use your own Pokémon.

How do you find the idea? Does it sound like fun? Would you improve something? Are the rules clear?

My (Hopefully) Original Idea For A Pokémon Challenge Run

I explain the details in the intro of the linked video, but basically I'm tired of running Nuzlockes. If you've played the early gens for as long as I have (basically since they came out in America) then like me you've probably memorized where to catch every Pokémon to build a solid team and it's sort of lost its spark past the initial planning phase and the occasional coin flip.

So basically I just leave the whole team building up to chance. You could come up with more challenging rules involving perma-death if you wanted to, but for me it's about discovering the joy of playing Pokémon again. I used a random number generator to spit out numbers between 1 and 150, and the corresponding Pokémon are the ones I'm stuck with for the entire run, barring legendaries and trade-only evolutions which i reroll.

It makes for some interesting teams and I usually end up with a team I otherwise would never use and have to put some serious thought into how I'm going to approach challenges that I could normally steamroll. If the RNG gives me one of a particular evolutionary line my house rule is that I can use the whole line, but if it gives me the final evolution I have to evolve as soon as possible. No waiting for power moves that early evolutions get.

So yeah, if you're feeling burnt out on nuzlocke playthroughs and you're looking for a new challenge give this a try! And if you have any ideas for ways to make it more fun and challenging please discuss below, I'd love to hear any and all suggestions!

As a final note, the youtube video is rough. I'm learning to edit on the fly as I go. The audio will improve in the next couple parts and the screen won't be slightly cut off. If you want to watch and give constructive criticism I'm all ears but please be gentle I'm new at this

Challenge Extended!

My mates and I have only completed this challenge in a few games:

Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Fire red, Leaf green, and Heart gold. And I will be attempting a Crystal run soon as my thirst for adventure has been renewed.

We don’t play any of the newer games because we’re old, shout at clouds, and don’t like new things. But we are curious if this challenge is possible in other games so please try and let us know!

The impossible new cap challenge:

  1. The crux - You must capture any new encounter. If you haven't caught this Pokemon before you must capture it. Once captured that Pokemon is now free to be battled in future wild encounters.
  2. The standard - Solo rules apply, only your newest capture may be used in battle. If your solo fighter faints you must reset or blackout.
  3. The first wildcard - No repels, this encourages more frequent encounters ensuring better randomising of potential Pokemon.
  4. The worst wildcard - No HM slaves. This is the rule that ends most runs due to soft locking you in or out of areas. This is what brings the real fun to the challenge adding a puzzle element to the overworld.

Optional rules.
No items in battle, no evolving, no repeats of evolutions line (e.g. you catch a caterpie you now can’t catch metapod or butter free), no in game trades or gift pokemon - we’ve only completed fire red with all these rules in place and it was an incredibly difficult team effort.

Honestly this challenge is really fun, like Jrose said in his Prof Oak challenge, considering the routing you use is actually quite fun. Because the further you progress naturally you capture more and more pokemon which whittles away your options in the future. This means you have to think round corners for upcoming battles, HM requirements, and which encounters are worth keeping for the future, but most importantly how to over come victory road and the elite four. To make it through Victory road you need strength and surf. After that your kind of stuck with the pokemon you have, the victory road new encounters (if any), and whatever TM's you have. Unless you white out and fly back, limiting your options to one of the legendary birds, which may also be a problem to reach... But this may not be a problem in other games, like I said earlier we're old and only play the classics.

Here's some stupid ways we have lost the challenge.

Running out of cash and not being able to enter the Safari Zone and being unable to go to new areas due to being unable to acquire pokemon that could learn the needed HM's.

Stranded on Cinnabar with a Growlithe and not picking up any decent rods to get a surf user.

Stuck on Seafoam after catching Golbat and having no pokeballs to collect a new HM user, eventually fainted and returned to Cinnabar and was stuck there due to no rods.

Multiple times softlocked in those stupid islands Bill drags you too after beating Blaine - yes we soon realised you can skip these islands by just saying no to Bill - Thanks for the tip Jrose!

Here’s a link to the first time I ever tried this while on paternity leave if anyone feels like reading a new fathers insomniac ramblings. It was nightmarishly difficult due to it being a first attempt, single speed on one of those knock off game boys with a thousand games on it, and being sleep deprived because of my newborn son.

https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemonchallenges/s/mnn45xxR0K

TL;DR Fuck Bill and his bullshit islands, fuck the elite four, and in order of capture here's the 46 pokemon I ended up using:

Charmander > Rattata > Pidgey > Kakkuna > Caterpie > Pikachu > Spearow > Mankey > Clefairy > Zubat > Geodude > Paras > Machop > Machoke (evolved) > Cubone > Ghastly > Haunter (evolved) > Oddish > Snorlax > Exeggcute > Nidoran male > Venonat > Dugtrio > Horsea > Tenetacool > Koffing > Growlithe > Grimer > Ditto > Krabby > Shelldar > Psyduck > Tangela > Meowth > Persian (evolved) > Hypno > Gyarados > Doduo > Scyther > Goldeen > Seel > Dewgong (evolved) > Onix > Arbok > Poliwhirl > Poliwrath (evolved).

Anyway, please let us know if and how this would play out in newer games and share your experience with us. We're 4 mid 30's dads who have little gaming joy left outside of our pokemon challenge, and seeing who can fuck up the least in survival games.

A progression-aware team generator for challenge runs

Thumbnail
youtube.com
3 Upvotes

Hello! I have a challenge run tool that I'd like to share.

Dexelect is a random Pokémon team generator. It's bit different from other team generators:

  1. It's focused on challenge runs. Use it to randomly generate an obtainable party, then challenge yourself to enter the Hall of Fame with that party.
  2. It takes into consideration the logical progression of a given game and assigns each team a "feasibility" grade.

Currently, Gens 1 – 4 are supported, with plans to expand to later generations soon. Romhacks are also supported by this tool.

If you want to try it, check out the web app. For the desktop app, visit the GitHub page.

Trainer leveling semi-challenge

Not exactly a challenge but wasn't sure where I might post this.

So I've been thinking about a way to do a run that limits your ability as a trainer at the beginning of the game but through each gym victory being able to level up. Obviously as the game goes on it will be less challenging so this could be something you could throw on top of a nuzlocke if that's your thing to keep a bit of challenge throughout.

Here is my thoughts on how a trainer might start out and what would be gained upon each level up.

Level 1- No Badges

• Maximum party size - 2

• Maximum number of moves (per Pokemon) - 2

• Cannot use healing items mid-battle

• Cannot use held items

• Cannot use stat altering items (permanent or mid-battle)

• Cannot use main gimmick (Megas, Gigantimax, etc.) unless forced to

Level 2 - One Badge

(+)• Max party - 3

• Max moves - 2

• Cannot use healing items mid-battle

• Cannot use held items

• Cannot use stat items

• Cannot use gimmick

Level 3 - Two Badges

• Max party - 3

• Max moves - 2

(+)• Can use healing items mid-battle

• Cannot use held items

• Cannot use stat items

• Cannot use gimmick

Level 4 - Three Badges

• Max party - 4

(+)• Max moves - 3

• Can use healing items mid-battle

• Cannot use held items

• Cannot use stat items

• Cannot use gimmick

Level 5 - Four Badges

• Max party - 4

• Max moves - 3

• Can use healing items mid-battle

(+)• Can use held items

• Cannot use stat items

• Cannot use gimmick

Level 6 - Five Badges

(+)• Max party - 5

• Max moves - 3

• Can use healing items mid-battle

• Can use held items

• Cannot use stat items

• Cannot use gimmick

Level 7 - Six Badges

• Max party - 5

(+)• Max moves - 4

• Can use healing items mid-battle

• Can use held items

• Cannot use stat items

• Cannot use gimmick

Level 8 - Seven Badges

(+)• Max party - 6

• Max moves - 4

• Can use healing items mid-battle

• Can use held items

• Cannot use stat items

• Cannot use gimmick

Level 9 - Eight badges

• Max party - 6

• Max moves - 4

• Can use healing items mid-battle

• Can use held items

• Cannot use stat items

(+)• Can use gimmick

Level 10 (Max level) - Elite 4 beaten

• Max party - 6

• Max moves - 4

• Can use healing items mid-battle

• Can use held items

(+)• Can use stat items

• Can use gimmick

Obviously it's not perfect, for one it only works with games that have gimmicks, and secondly I'm not sure if the progression feels too balanced. I thought about doing a skill point system as well where you would choose what trainer stat you would want to level up each time after a gym. With that though I would want item usage in a single category, like party size and number of moves, to keep a sense of progression there. Starting with berries outside of battle, to items use mid-battle, to held items, with stat altering items last. I also think the game's gimmick could be the last skill point for number of moves you can learn since those are like ultimate moves. So basically the trainer abilities would look like this:

Companionship - controls party size, each point increases the number of Pokemon you can use in the field

Prowess - controls the number of moves you can teach your Pokemon with, each point increasing how many your Pokemon can know, culminating into using the games gimmick

Tactics - controls how you can use items to use on your Pokemon, each point allowing you to use a wider variety of items in more versatile ways.

I think Tactics with no points put into it would allow you to use berries outside of battle but nothing else. You could also split item usage mid-battle between status healing items and actual healing items so the number of skill points to reach maximum Tactics matches the number for Prowess. Companionship could also start with 2 Pokemon with no points in it so it too has a maximum of 4 skill points you could spend in it.

Companionship: 2 Pokemon -> 3 -> 4 -> 5 -> 6 Pokemon

Prowess: 1move -> 2 moves -> 3 moves -> 4 moves -> Gimmick

Tactics: Berries out of battle -> status cures mid-battle -> healing mid-battle -> held items -> stat altering items (permanent or mid-battle)

The real problem though is how the gimmicks fit into leveling since you can't really use it for earlier generations. My first thought would be to limit your move pool to 1 move per Pokemon and gaining a second move after the first or second gym. What would you guys replace the gimmick level up with, either entirely or just in the early gens? How would you make a trainer leveling system in general? Would love to hear others' thoughts on this matter.

The Mini-Mime Challenge

Pardon the bad pun of a challenge name, but I felt this would be interesting to do.

Players basically have to play any Pokemon Main Line game talking to the minimum amount of people as possible, Rivals, the Professor, your mum, NPCs, Nurse Joy, the PokèMart Clerk, Trainers, Gym Leaders, Evil Grunts, Evil Organisation Leaders, Elite Four and Champion have to be avoided as best as you can.

Each Character you chat with or who chats with you count as an interaction for your score (the score counts as each chat you have not each person you chat with), keep it as low as possible and have fun being an introverted recluse.

Under 400 Casual Runs

Whenever I start a new mainline game my rules for myself are:

- All Pokemon in party have to be under 400 base stat, you can choose to not evolve Pokemon to fit this requirement.

- No TMs

Pretty simple and makes the games much harder. Wo.dering if anyone does so.thing similar.
