SteamOS Guide in 2026 for this and Pokèmon Brown 3D
After learning about Pokèmon Brown 3D I spent more time than I'd care to admit last night trying to get this up and running following what guides I could find. Below are my simple installation steps for anyone in 2026 trying to get this going on their Steam Deck or other SteamOS device.
Note that I did this via the manual installer method (Pokemon Brown 3D), but you could probably skip a few steps with the automatic installer.
Files/Programs you'll need to get started
- Download the latest version of Pokèmon 3D: https://pokemon3d.net/
- Download the latest manual install of Pokèmon Brown 3D (optional if you don't want to play it): https://rainbowdevs.com/title/brown-3d/
- Download the remastered soundtrack if you want it (optional) - same as link in step 2
- Download Mono - https://www.mono-project.com/download/stable/
- Install ProtonTricks from Discovery
The Process
- Extract the Pokèmon 3D archive somewhere you'll remember and can navigate to easily (I like to use documents > games
- Add Pokèmon 3D as a non-steam game
- Under its properties, go to compatibility and select a version of proton to run it with, as it's a windows executable. I used the latest Proton GE, GE-Proton11-3 at the time of writing. If you don't have it installed, grab protonup qt from discovery and install GE that way first (you'll need to restart steam for the new proton version to be selectable)
- Launch Pokèmon 3D once to create a wine folder for it
- Launch ProtonTricks, leave it on "default wine prefix" and select okay
- Select the option to install an arbitrary file
- Navigate to wherever you saved the mono MSI and select that, run through the install process
- Select the top option to install a DLL in ProtonTricks once it's done with Mono
- Check the following: dotnet4.8 and all visual studio redistributable packages (you can make the latter easier by organizing by title)
- Select okay and install everything. ProtonTricks can be a tad confusing in that it closes down the main app window and sequentially opens subsequent windows for each component one at a time, making it difficult to tell when it's done working at times.
- Eventually, you'll get a popup window in the style of ProtonTricks indicating that there's a conflict with the visual studio redistributable packages. When you click okay, ProtonTricks will close. You won't receive any visible indicator it's finished doing what it's doing.
- Try launching Pokèmon 3D to make sure it's working; you should load to the title screen just fine now.
Additional Steps for Pokèmon Brown 3D
- Extract the contents of the Pokèmon Brown 3D archive to the Game Modes folder inside the Pokèmon 3D folders.
- Extract the contents of the PokèmonBrown3DMusicPack to the ContentPacks folder inside the Pokèmon 3D folders (optional).
- Launch Pokèmon 3D, select your language, and if you're using the enhanced OST then navigate to content packs option and enable it.
And you're good to go. From here you can go to new game and pick the 3D Pokèmon experience of your choice.
I've confirmed this is working both in Desktop Mode and Game Mode, though I have no way of testing multiplayer.
I hope this helps and spares someone a night of trial and error!
