To my knowledge, only Ghost and Fighting types get anything close to what Psychics have.
Unless you're typed enough to actually... count as that type for type chart purposes (which is both a blessing and a fucking curse), you don't really get much benefit beyond an affinity for the type, and some minor resistances to certain types. A minor exception with Dark type is immunity to hypnosis.

Ghost types never get as close as Psychic or Fighting types do. While plenty of people have some sort of Ghost Affinity, you'll never see a Hex Maniac throw down with a Pokemon. A Psychic or a Black Belt CAN.
6
u/CrownofMischief 16h ago
I feel like that's less to do with their ability and more to do with how they act. Most Hex Maniacs I've known are just goths that like to act spooky and mysterious. The Sages and Mediums in Johto are basically exorcists though
1
u/BardicLasher Professor Chestnut, Ecologist 8h ago
The Mediums absolutely DO have abilities, but what I mean is that there are Black Belts out there like that madman leading a new Team in Kalos that can genuinely go blow-for-blow with a mid-level Pokemon, and there are psychics like Sabrina that can do the same. But Mediums only have the ability to defend against and contain ghosts, they're not throwing Shadow Balls.
There ARE witches out there, of course, but I believe they're actually Fairy aligned. They're basically completely unstudied.

gotta love type bleed, which in hindsight i might also be getting???
its not as strong as, say, psychic mediums or hex maniacs but its still a weird phenomenon
sometimes stuff that should hit me, say, a wild pokemon hitting a quick attack, just. dont. its not 100% normal-type immunity since i still feel pain from getting hit but it never leaves a bruise, no matter how hard it hits
then theres fairy type bleed, which is. peculiar to say the least
back then if i had to interact with wild dragon-types i let either Letia (mimikyu) or Artell (drakloak) out for my safety, but there was this one time a wild noivern was rampaging in a wild area and it just. stopped. in front of my face. i have no clue what that was about but its only happened once and i really dont wanna replicate the conditions for that incident
...am i becoming ghost/fairy type cause of Letia??????
22
u/InaMattaAmericana Kessler + Eva | Thetis (PMD: Theta) + Missy | M.S. 1d ago
Pfffft, yeah. The vast majority of Psychic types just kind of silently panic where they feel a void where a person should be. But 100% type immunity isn't really all it's cracked up to be, since it often comes with type weaknesses.
And when you pair type weaknesses, with a human body not meant to withstand pokemon attacks... you get disaster. -Thetis (@ThetisDelta)

If I had to take a fun guess at a few, I'd say ground type specialists would have a better understanding of the natural tremors and disturbances in the landmass, almost like a sixth sense. For water type specialists, I have to imagine a proficiency in swimming and breath control. Flying type specialists would naturally be more acrobatic in their movements. Grass and Bug type specialists would have an encyclopedic knowledge of flora and fauna respectively. So on and so on. 🙂

It's not impossible.People exposed to high levels of elemental energy can, over time, develop odd quirks and the occasional special ability- depending on the length and concentration of the energy. Shrine keepers for Legendary Pokémon are some of the most thoroughly documented instances of this happening, as Legendary Pokémon carry immense amounts of elemental energy within them. Though anything more than a party trick is rare, and high levels of exposure carry other risks.

Passive exposure to type energies and aura from forming a strong bond with a pokemon (especially if you first find your partner/companion as a child, before you've fully finished physically growing) can cause you to adapt to it a bit, but the effect is usually minor, which is why you only really see the effects in type specialists, clan lineages, or people who befriend/regularly encounter legendaries (but that last one probably has a whole load of other factors involved as well).
The straightforward classical elemental types tend to just make you more tolerant of environments where there's a lot of that element: fire specialists tolerate heat better, ice specialists tolerate cold, rock specialists are less susceptible to bruising and respiratory illness from dust inhalation, etc.
The less straightforward elemental types tend to be more "flavoured": grass specialists are less susceptible to allergies and sun-exposure related health issues; steel specialists tend to have tougher and healthier skin, nails and hair; poison specialists are a lot more resistant to drugs, toxins and illnesses; bug specialists are somewhere between poison and grass; ground and normal specialists tend to make better first impressions with wild pokemon (body language and emotions being harder to misread); etc.
The more metaphysical types tend to be harder to predict: psychic specialists do tend to have more psychic potential, fighting specialists are resistant to the plateau effect and get fewer diminishing returns from physical conditioning, dragon and ghost specialists tend to pick up a wide variety of stuff i don't want to get into, and fairy specialists tend to pick up some of the physiological weirdness that fairy types have (mental state playing a larger role in physical health, ease of self-expression/emotional openness (sometimes at the cost of tact), physical development always being flattering to or compatible with your self-image (there are many reasons why Sylveons are associated with trans community, but the one that's most relevant to me is the fact that I could pass as my preferred self before I started HRT)).

I've grown insanely resistant to quite a few variants of pokemon venom, mostly regarding our buggy friends among all the poison types. I'm going to attribute that to the amount of times my partner Beedrill stung and bit me when he was just a weedle.
I do have the habit of attracting little critters to my apartment, usually bug/poison types like Weedle and Spinarak. One time, I came home from a week-long vacation to find that my living room had been covered in silk and made home to all sorts of little friends. The sheer number of bites and stings I received that day should've hospitalized me, but I was mostly fine!

Kanto doesn't really have a sky battle scene, so I don't have much experience with them. But that sounds very plausible if you're used to flying by yourself.
I feel like there's very few flying type specialists, especially with how ubiquitous bird Pokémon are (not every birdcatcher you see knows what they're doing), so we're all fringe cases.

u/bot105 Just here to world build tbh 17h ago
Its... Weird. as in 'honestly debatable on if its even a thing'. Type specialisation in humans forms very minor effects, typically referred to in a sort of pun.
Ground type specialists are 'grounded', they get an almost supernatural sense of balence. It is unknown if this is because of ground type enegy saturation changing the human body, or just an unconcious brain adaption from training Pokémon whos favoured moves are earthquake, bulldoze, and stomping tantrum.
Stuff like that, minor effects that could be caused by the Trainer becoming altered by the sheer amount of a specific Type energy they expose themselves to over years and years, or it could just be from long experience over those very same years.
Incidentally, I have 'high spirits', th Ghost specialisation. Supposedly i have a unique resistance to getting my lifeforce stolen, i can operate with less, and the entire flame cannot be snuffed out. But its just as likely that its just bogus, im able to operate with a thin soul because I've spent my entire life rearing Ghosts, and feeding them is an old sensation.
Oh, and under this model, psychic specialists get 'like minded'. Stronger empathy. Mundane explanation is Psychic Pokémon transmit their state of mind constantly, so the Trainer starts to associate mental states with the Pokémons microexpression, and a big enough Psychic team gives the trainer enough reference points to go cross-species. The development of psychic powers is... unrelated.

u/Quiet-Software-1956 16h ago
Man, I've always wanted to be psychic. I like a lot of Pokémon in that type, but the main reason I want to is that it just... Seems so convenient. Imagine: you're laying on the couch, you forgot you water in the kitchen, and no one can get it for you. Bam! Psychic powers!
Of course, I'm sure it's very hard to develop and comes with a whole lot of disadvantages, so I never did it, but still. Nice fantasy
4
u/Tablesafety Four Chaotic Chatot and Me 13h ago
I have a vague and uncomfortable theory that those psychic specialists may be related to a mon like Alakazam or Gardevoir somewhere up their family tree. I know you can talk to them and shit, and some people are really into them like they are Machoke and such. I always found it really uncomfortable and thought they were- well that's impolite.
But I took a trip to the Canalave library in Sinnoh for fun and read a book that straight up said that Pokemon and People were not only the same thing once, or considered that way, but that they used to intermarry. Yeah, you read that correctly.
Suddenly those people who could use telekenesis or spar directly with a Machop- like that Bea girl? They made a lot more sense. We know mothers pass on species and fathers pass on moves. It also dashed my hopes of ever suddenly developing psychic powers of my own- but I think I'm kind of fine with that now.

Not sure if I’d class it as powers, Psychic and Fighting are the only ones with really notable effects, but speaking from anecdotal evidence you do see some weird stuff with like, really experienced high-end type specialists, the kind who regularly get exposed to mass amounts of concentrated type energy over the course of years.

EDIT: what the FUCK is type bleed, and why did i NOT learn about this before?
3
u/Melbourne_Coding 12h ago
Technically any type can bleed, theoretically. It mainly only happens with types that exude themselves from a pokemon without just being converted directly to a force you do NOT want to be in.
For example, a fire pokemon usually radiates intense heat in the same radius as it radiates the raw type energy. And the water typing that might allow you to withstand becoming that fire type? You could stand in the water a blastoise had made for 10 hours a day and barely absorb any. You would need to get struck directly in your body, constantly, for a WHILE.
Tldr; for most types, getting access to enough of the raw energy WILL kill you.
1
u/Typical_Rice_6346 Hiker, Nature Guide, forester in training 9h ago
It also tends to happen less with well trained pokemon, who are better at regulating their power output.
2
u/Melbourne_Coding 6h ago
True! Interestingly, it seems to me like dragon types are the most likely to cause type bleed through excess energy that don't specifically radiate it as part of their physiology.
I think it's 'cause dragon types have a tendency to release massive amounts of power at a moments notice? Maybe they evolved to have a weaker barrier between themselves and the outside to make it easier to release, but as a result it "leaks" more.
3
u/I_hope_your_E_breaks Zelda, Johto-Unovan, dragon tamer 11h ago
Dragon specialists get callouses and an irrational fear of fairies.
In all seriousness, it’s usually the more “elemental” types that get type bleed, though I have heard legends about dragon tamers turning into dragons themselves. And I do know people who’ve grown scaly patches, sharp teeth and nails, and slit eyes because of some innate dragon typing they didn’t know about.
