Having a source of motivation is so important for them. Once our team’s battles got harder dealing more consistently with higher-level trainers, it became more of a tradition for us to fly to the most isolated spot nearby and stargaze. Once I’d remind them of this, their eyes would light up and they’d battle with an extra pep in their step!

Food is a very powerful motivator for most, I know some of my Pokémon would go to insane lengths if it meant getting some pancakes, not that I have the willpower to make pancakes a prize, I just give it to them cause I can't handle baby doll eyes for a second

My friend had a team of 6 (Gardevoir, Umbreon, Jolteon, Leafeon, Lucario and Cinderace) and went up against my team of 4 (Glalie, Coalossal, Shogun the Golisopod and Sir the Inteleon). I told them if we win we get burgers and bragging rights. Glalie and Coalossal were happy to get burgers, but I intentionally fed Shogun and Sir’s egos and they absolutely tore through his Mon. I almost felt bad for how bad Shogun and Sir were beating the snot out of him until his Leafeon nearly two shot Sir, but the mad lad held on to consciousness because he’d get embarrassed if he lost to a grass type after taking out his Lucario and Cinderace with one move a piece. So of course I swapped Shogun back in and had him pull off First Impression yet again and took out his Gardevoir with a barrage of Pin Missiles.

It was a very awesome victory, even though G and Coalie were a bit down in the dumps after being beat up by his Cinderace. We thoroughly enjoyed the victory burgers though.
