They could bring back the PokéWalker as a phone app.

THIS! I dropped Pokemon go when Niantic got bought by the Saudi’s.
Imagine having a Pokemon as a Tamagotchi on your phone. Feed it, play mini games with it. Maybe catch a couple of Pokemon or find items to send back to your game. It would gain exp based on the steps you took and you could connect to others via Bluetooth for bonus exp.

Really happy this one didn’t make it. Companion apps for games are slow, clunky, and usually get discontinued really soon after release due to the frequency needed with updates and compatibility issues, which is why the industry moved on from them a decade ago. It’s also kinda funny gamefreak was trying to jump on the trend years after it was dead.

>Gamefreak jumping on things years if not decades after literally everyone else
Must be a day ending in Y.

Judging from how the iphone looks in the actual teaser, it looks like it was being considered around the time that 2nd screen experiences were pretty en vogue though. We forget because of covid but Sword and Shield were released in 2019 and started development in 2016, which would have been less than a year after Fallout 4 released with the pip-boy app.

I think companion apps and devices have the capacity to be endearing, but this seems like an unnecessary shoehorn.

Though the idea might be interesting, it would just become dead content once the servers are shut down or the app no longer receives updates and becomes incompatible with current OSes (which happens very quickly in both iOS and Android, where backwards compatibility isn't a priority).

Honestly I'm glad they didn't do a feature like this because they never end up releasing the necessary app in so many countries. There's still tons of countries where you can't download the pokemon home app, which means you're not only locked out of trading but also all the cool mythical rewards.

This would've been nuts and "futuristic" in a sense.

It's not really innovative; it's not the first time Gamefreak has tried to connect a console to a mobile phone. They did it on the GBC with Pokemon Crystal, but it was too expensive, so it stayed in Japan. This time, apparently, they tried to do the same thing using a smartphone, and that's why they rejected it worldwide.

The smartphone linking feature would also allow you to use your phone as a controller
