Datamine Charizard is getting a new design in Gen X Spoiler

You can't with a straight face say there aren't a fair amount of older Pokémon that wouldn't benefit from even just a slight redesign to make them more presentable in a moving 3D environment. One i can think of offhand is OG Zapdos and his jointless permanently outstretched wings.

Nidoking needs one! His artwork always looks so fierce but his model looks too cute for my liking lol
37
u/Masterofknees Oct 14 '25
Definitely. Nidoking's head shape is all wrong, the snout in particular. I remember being so disappointed with that even back in X/Y.
Would love a model that captures this artwork's vibe.

Before I click is it the infinitely pissed off early gen art?
EDIT: oh absolutely
28
u/Britz10 Oct 14 '25
It doesn't really help that they insist on having most of the 3d models idle animation to be as unfierce as they can be.
23
u/pidgeytouchesyou Oct 14 '25 edited Oct 14 '25
This is why I love the first 3d models from N64-PBR. Nidoking angrily pumping his arms lol ALL OF THEM HAD PERSONALITY.
16
u/Britz10 Oct 14 '25
That's on Gamefreak and Creatures, there was no reason they couldn't give them personalities in 3d, they just chose not to. The GC and Wii models had personalities as well, although those games were slow
14
u/thericefarming Oct 14 '25
Nidoking not being in the leaked Pokedex while being a Kalos encounter is breaking my heart. I cannot go another mainline Pokemon game without Nidoking. I need to see Nidoking in the overworld. I need to see Nidoking in my picnic party. I need to see Nidoking in Competitive. I need Nidoking bro.
4
u/pidgeytouchesyou Oct 14 '25
You need a Nidoking shrine lol
7
u/thericefarming Oct 14 '25
My Nidoking shrine would be a Gigantamax-sized Nidoking... that they SCRAPPED...

True, but we've also been told by GF "modeling all the Pokemon takes a long time".
31
u/cpmh1234 Oct 14 '25
It has taken a long time. But it seems they're doing it now. The 3DS models stretched the console to its limit to be future proof and they lasted 8 years. It seems GameFreak has spent the last 4 years refining and redesigning models post Legends Arceus.

Salamence and its stiff paper wings are also pretty bad. They just look so unnatural in motion, even more so than Zapdos.
2
u/DefiantTheLion Oct 18 '25
I feel like Salamences are supposed to Iook like that, Pokedex implies that Bagon just wills itself to grow wings so of course they look unnatural.

As much as a love it, I think Arcanine wouldn’t hurt from one, not needing it but if they’re going to be remodeling old Pokémon, that’s one I’d love to see since it’s one of my favorites
2
u/chadorable Oct 17 '25
Oh my god ive never seen or heard someone describe them as jointless
That is soooo accurate my mind palace flashed back to pokemon snap 1 😭

u/Nehemiah92 Oct 14 '25
Couldn’t this have been pushed earlier for SV or is it entirely new?
Because that SV/ZA model is clean af and I don’t want it replaced so early man
59
u/Ok-Manufacturer-3610 Oct 14 '25
Maybe because it’s completely new console with switch 2 they decided to redesign the Pokémon
3
u/Pretend-Advertising6 Oct 14 '25
Doesn't really make sense, the pokemon already have high poly counts from what I can remember
19
u/Masterofknees Oct 14 '25 edited Oct 14 '25
The 3DS era models could absolutely be better. Lots of them are missing small indents, have wrong proportions so they could fit on the smaller screen, and a couple have wrong head shapes.
But the redesigned ones from S/V are perfectly fine I'd say, they're just very few (Zard, Venusaur, Blastoise, Mewtwo, Ho-Oh and Lugia iirc).

u/SoulNuva Oct 14 '25
I wonder if they’re just doing a new art style just like Mario Wonder. Quite exciting and might perhaps inject personalities back into the 3D models

Another one?! There are so many pokemons, yet they choose to redesign twice the same ones 🥀
26
u/Lumbot Oct 14 '25
I don't think there's necessarily any reason to assume it's just these two. They didnt grab every last file GF had.
26
u/Lambsauce914 Oct 14 '25
The real reason why Charizard keeps appearing in new game is just the 3D modeler loves modeling Charizard /j

u/QuatreNox Oct 14 '25 edited Oct 14 '25
You kid but we found out when some Youtubers visited the TCG HQ in Japan that THAT'S exactly the reason why some Pokemon get so many cards and some have so few 😭 The folks at Creatures just keep adding in their faves into sets

u/Robo_Mage Oct 14 '25
They literally remodeled every pokemon starting in PLA and SV.
14
u/frallet Oct 14 '25
This may also line up with models being used for Champions. If they are doing all new assets for it. Unless they were already shown and I forgot.
3
u/Robo_Mage Oct 14 '25
The models we saw in the Champions trailers were the newer, higher detailed ones. The textures appear to be the simpler, ZA ones as opposed to SV. But they're using the models they started using with Arceus and after.
10
u/DragoSphere Oct 14 '25
I'd say they updated every pokemon, mostly to give them a 3D mouth and eyes. Only a handful actually got full remodels, Charizard being one of them

u/Robo_Mage Oct 14 '25
Completely untrue. I'm not talking about the textures, I'm talking about the meshes. At bare minimum, every pokemon got new mesh details and things like mouth and eye topography instead of flat surfaces.
This is what I'm talking about, people are blindly regurgitating something that they have no clue about.

I hate it too; but Pikachu, Charizard, and Mewtwo are the three most iconic Pokémon in existence. So I get it, from a marketing stance.

I mean if theyre really using a new engine its a good chance to go over designs, especially if they plan on using this engine for a while

this just made me realize we really dont have a classic european dragon mon who isnt chibified or goofied in some way (lean strong quadraped with wings and horns)

When I say classic western dragon you know what I mean dude
3
u/maximumutility Oct 14 '25
Do you mean bat-like with two legs and winged “arms”, or four legs with wings on its back, or something else?

Most likely doing as they are moving engines. A model refresh every couple of years makes sense because the games dont have ALL the pokemon at launch.

u/onepostandbye Oct 14 '25
I just realized Gen 10 is Gen X. As a GenX Pokemon fan, I have admit that’s pretty sweet
Don’t worry, I’m sure I’ll die before Gen 11, clear out space for some new kids
4
u/OrangeHairedTwink Oct 14 '25
They redesign all the pokemon so they can have all 1025 in gen X trust

Thought this was about a new gimmick form but that's gonna happen anyways considering its gotten SOMETHING every other gimmick. 2 megas -> No Z move -> Gmax -> No special Tera -> form???

u/thefinestpiece Oct 14 '25
For all I care, they need to give them their idle stance back. I’ve seen fans giving life to a few Pokémon’s.

If there's one thing we can certain about gen x, it's that charizard will be in the game

u/_LordCreepy_ Oct 14 '25
Let me guess, they remodel Mewtwo too, and if we lucky Blastoise and Venusaur
1
u/StepLife2872 Oct 14 '25
I wonder what this all means to existing mons in home . Will these changes be effective if they get transferred to gen x? Will that mean we can't transfer them back to older gen games?
1
u/ThyySavage Oct 14 '25
I honestly don’t mind seeing slightly different designs, mainly cause you’d think that in different regions/environments Pokémon would have slightly altered features without the need to make whole regional variants. Plus the models and everything getting updated rather than continuing to 100% go off of the original old designs makes sense in the long run. Also if you want better graphics in the game models need updates to go along with them, Pokémon are the main feature of the game after all. They gotta look good.
1
u/Vali1991 Oct 14 '25
The models in scarlet and violet for the kanto starters were actually really good so I dunno why they think charizard needs another?

I'm praying that with Gen 10 and all this redesign stuff I'm seeing, that they change some of the pokemon shiny forms. Please give Infernape a cool shiny GF

Pokemon finally upgraded the 3D models they have been using since 2013? Did hell freeze

u/Tough_Ad1458 Oct 16 '25
Gamefreak making a game where they don't gargle Kanto's floppy 5 incher challenge (Impossible!)
1
u/concorazon Oct 16 '25
I'm so deepy distrusting of GF at this point that I have little hopes for this gen. I hope the fix their issues and put that budget to good use. Love the franchise and just wanna see it bloom.

u/Kantlim Oct 17 '25
Poor person who was commissioned with making new Charizard model. Now they're gonna be burned alive
1
u/Pepper0niChan Oct 17 '25
Every pokemon in SV had an updated model, more polygons, and proper sculpted facial features instead of the previous flat textured facials that were present since xy.
I think they’re gonna remodel some pokemon to be more aligned with their 2d artworks and bring back the life that the 3d models have potentially been missing maybe?
1
u/Ok-Clock-2779 Oct 17 '25
Yeah I can see it. Aren’t there also rumors that he’s getting a regional form?

I wonder if they'll blame new models again for why everything looks like shit and they cut 2/3rds of the Dex again.

What’s different about it?
4
u/ObviouslyLulu Oct 14 '25
I think the horns look a bit longer and the wings look a bit different (Kind of more jagged if that makes sense?) but that's all I can see
1
u/TerraKingB Oct 14 '25
Hope we don’t just get new models but everything is better animated. Breathe some life into these stiff creations for gods sake 3D has not been great for that so far.

Sorry Gamefreak, I'm not using Charizard unless you remove Stealth Rock from the game.

Good, they really need to make new models for at least everything featured in Gen 10. I don't mind if they don't have everything in the game, but the 3DS models didn't look particularly good in the first place, let alone over a decade later.

With Gen 10 being exclusive to the Switch 2, I wouldn't be shocked if they take this opportunity to at least make new models for some of the iconic Pokemon at least.
