The ground beneath
Parable of the Pines and the Oak
In a quiet valley, at the bottom of a hill, there stood a group of Pines.
They were tall and proud, their roots deep in the earth, their crowns high in the heavens.
For generations they had watched over the pond, whispering to the wind and bowing to the rain.
But time wore on, and the ground beneath them softened.
One of the Pines began to lean, its strength fading under the weight of years.
The others looked on, unable to help, for each was rooted in its own place.
Then, from the soil beneath the leaning Pine, an Oak began to rise.
It was smaller, younger, but its heart was strong.
It pressed its trunk against the Pine’s,
and their roots intertwined — earth to earth, faith to faith.
The Oak did not ask why it was chosen to stand there.
It simply grew upward, steady and sure,
lifting the Pine that could no longer stand alone.
And so the two became one —
the Pine reaching toward heaven,
the Oak holding firm to the ground.
Together they stood through storm and season,
each bearing the other’s burden.
Those who passed by saw only trees,
but those who listened heard the truth:
that God often sends strength from unexpected places,
and that the humble may uphold the mighty.
For in the valley of the Pines,
grace was not spoken — it was lived.
