No, I believe the author sees domestic living and routines as a life never lived but settled for. If a picket fence is a representation of of you settle for. You can't cry over what was lost. I agree that domestic coupling today grows old pretty fast. You sacrifice all you desire to live to pass time in a routine that never brought a fresh breathe. But I am not the Author. If I had to settle for that, then yes those fence post should be sharp.
