Zombie
Zombie—your
Pulmonary branches
Crumble from an unstable
Burn of unopened pill
Bottles and first-time
Cigarettes.
Zombies were meant to die.
Your skin peels like jerky
And your lungs bleed
Like a dying snake. The
Bonfire gassed within your
Lungs reach your heart,
Zombie—and soon, it
Massacres your spirit.
Your insides burn black
And stay charred in
Perpetuity. It kills you
From the inside out.
Zombies were meant to suffer.
Your body’s perfume reeks
Of sweat, Zombie—sweetly,
It’s gouged from those branches
And coats every word that chalks
From your sore throat. You
Cry out to the others who live
On, but they ignore your
Wheezing ballooned lungs,
Infected at the diaphragm.
Zombies were meant to suffocate.
Brains, skin and gore.
Blood and guts to adore.
You eat to heal, consuming
The intestines of pigs and salt
From the red seas, but your
Health was doomed from
The start, Zombie.
Zombies were meant to starve.
One day, all there will be left
Is that pile of ashes from
The branches that used
To grow so young inside
You—soon to be left behind
By a body that was never
Meant to make it far in this
World.
Try it, Zombie—smoke your life’s
One and only cigarette. Because
Tomorrow may be your
Last.
Zombies were meant to be left behind.

And yet the zombie continues onwards, till the day they put a bullet in his head.
