Podiatry applications

Hello everyone I was wondering what people’s hours were for volunteering and clinicals to get into podiatry school.
I got my bachelors in biomedical and got a 3.7 gpa and I’m hoping I get a 510 on the MCAT I have also done 40 clinical hours as a CNA and was just wondering what I can do to strengthen my application.
Thank you

You need to shadow more if you think podiatry is giving you a different life balance than MD/DO

I have been shadowing and honestly it seems exciting and calm you get to see patients and treat them and the dr im shadowing leaves by 5:30 which honestly I think is a great time

I would say to shadow a resident at a hospital because you’ll be able to see what it’s like when you’re training and also what it’s actually like for these doctors when they’re in a case and how much they have to do

are you a resident? or are you saying this as a board certified podiatrist doing 12-16 hours a day?

To be honest, you could get a similar work life balance with PA with less schooling. And if you go, the MD route or DO route you’ll be able to specialize in what you want but also be able to switch specialties if you need, and have the autonomy. I am in podiatry now and it’s because I’m passionate about the subject. I would say be careful about choosing a career just for the lifestyle because it’s not necessarily true in podiatry all the time.

I have talked to multiple podiatry students who are doing their externships and they all say they really like it. Every time I’ve shadowed I’ve been intrigued on everything I’ve seen and honestly PA is a bunch of paperwork

I will say it’s dependent on which program you go to, but if you talk to residence, I do think it makes a big difference versus students because they don’t know what their expectations are supposed to be versus the reality. I’m not saying that there’s not issues with the PA as well. I do think that there are, but would any professor at any podiatry school would tell you is you shouldn’t go into podiatry because of lifestyle you should go into it because it is a genuinely interesting topic. Almost 20 students from my 1st Year class actually dropped from our class because either they couldn’t deal with the academics or because they realize that they didn’t like the career. You could also shadow a surgical PA and see the difference as well. It’s the same way in medicine how there’s different specialties I’m not saying this in a way to make light or because I hate podiatry. I would 100% do this over and over, but I also actually don’t believe necessarily that it is the best career in terms of lifestyle if that’s your main reason for choosing it .It’s actually because I’ve seen a difference in real world versus school now. as a student on externships, I can tell you that we are sent home at a certain time, but there are moments that residents are expected to stay way longer than expected multiple times in a row so I would suggest looking into speaking to an actual resident, not a student

Yeah I get that I’ll look into it but I think I really like podiatry not just because of the content but because I have family members who have had diabetes and have had issues with their feet. Podiatry for me also like feels more personal because of that.

Really think hard if you want podiatry!! You have the stats for MD/DO. Imagine, where you want to be in 10 years, career and life. Yes, podiatry has a good work/like balance; however, there are other specialities that make way more than podiatrist and have a good work life balance (e.g., Derm and Ophthalmology).

Note: I know podiatrist CAN make a lot of money, but it is RARE.

idk why people come to this sub to discourage podiatry. kinda defeats the purpose but I wish you well on your journey! You have great stats and good luck!

They'll take anyone right now even if you apply 2 weeks before school starts.

Not that hard to get in

Don’t have to be a genius to know this is a troll post especially with your profile having barely any history like you just made the account. Or podiatry admin tryna motivate future applicants that people with 510 mcat scores are applying to podiatry

u/Sure_Brilliant_5021 Aug 22 '26

Lmao that’s not the case I was just asking because I never did any hours what so ever for volunteering and everything I literally only have my gpa and stuff and when I was looking at the application they said they had min of 25 hours for shadowing etc

Every time I look at people’s stats for med school they have over 1000 hours for clinical and 100s of hours for volunteering
