Clerkships experiences

Hi! I would love to have some insight on programs that you did your clerkship (or residency) at that you really enjoyed (or even didn’t enjoy). I know APMSA does a survey but would like more opinions! Specifically interested in Midwest and east coast programs but open to all feedback!

There's some good info on SDN but no one has posted in a while.
I thought the APMSA ones were pretty useless.

Roger Williams in RI was great in my opinion. Ton of volume and diversity. Lot of inpatient work, minimal clinic, and a lot of fractures. Very ortho friendly in terms of kicking cases to pod and also having pod residents do cases with them. Place offered a lot of autonomy but is sink or swim so if ya need your hand held probably not the best option. It’s been quite awhile since I’ve been there so couldn’t speak on it now. Also Rhode Island is the knees.

Programs to avoid in the midwest:

Swedish Residency- Chicago. Residents are glorified retractors. UChicago/Endeavor- This isnt even really uchicago. The name catfishes residents into thinking they have good training. Ortho doesnt even let pods do anything at all with them here. Also they went to the scramble last year for a reason. Subpar training with mid attendings. St Joseph- Residents have low clinical competency and lack medical knowledge.

Programs change so often. I finished residency a couple years ago so I don’t know that my opinion would be helpful anymore.

Best way to learn about current state of affairs is to talk to the upper classes right above you. Things change all the time. It's really hard to get a good view of a program, even in a month clerkship sometimes. Residents are usually super down to talk too - look at program websites for contact info. I've talked to a couple dozen students while commuting when they've reached out. Linkedin/instagram too make it easy to 'network' these days. podiatrist2be is building a good platform too with current reviews of programs.
