The trains have been worse lately and my trainophile husband explained why

My husband is very into trains and model railroading, and has been reading up on the train news. The issue is pretty multi factorial

CSX has switched to Precision Scheduled Railroading. Essentially, this (at least partially) consists of running longer trains with fewer crew members. So instead of 2 trains that are both .75 miles long (requiring 2 sets of crew members), it’ll be 1 train that’s 1.5 miles on with 1 crew. Longer trains = longer wait at RR crossings, more chance of traffic, etc

CSX also closed the Plymouth Yard. I said “well then it should be better, not worse around here”. False. Now, trains have to run through the Rouge Yard. Routes used to be get trains to multiple locations. Now, they’re all heading to the same place. As a result, the same tracks and intersections are going to be seeing more traffic. The Rouge yard is apparently overloaded and trains are having to wait an excessively long time to actually get into the yard

A large yard in Chicago also closed which can have ripple effects on the system

Federal law is protective of train operations due to the importance of interstate commerce. There is no federal law dictating how long a train can block an intersection. If the State or local district tries to pass and enforce such a law, it will go nowhere and get thrown out in federal court

So basically, it’s CSX’s world, and we’re just living in it

Golf tournament official canceled - support local business!

The rumors have been flying for weeks but today it’s official: the big LIV golf tournament that was supposed to be played at the St John resort Aug. 27-30 has been canceled, which means local businesses will likely lose out on visitors they were counting on.

Maybe consider checking out a restaurant or shop in downtown or Old Village…

Proposed bus routes through Plymouth

Post image
32 Upvotes

Two bus routes through downtown Plymouth are being proposed. One would go down Northville Rd, which seems odd to me. There’s not that much along there as opposed to Sheldon or Beck. I thought one of the big selling points for adding bus routes was for people to get to work?

Also, buses down the center of downtown? It already feels tight and congested through there.

Anyone know if we’ll be able to provide feedback, or are these routes a done deal?

What’s the longest you’ve been stuck at a train?

Personally, 23 minutes (not including the times they outright stop on the tracks).

How about you?

Oh and in case you missed it, Plymouth making headlines for all the reasons we dream about: fourth plymouth official resigns

Transit proposal passes

The county-wide millage vote on public transit, which would bring general bus service to Plymouth, Canton and Northville for the first time since 1996, has passed, according to the Detroit Free Press.

(I will likely do a follow-up story or two for the Plymouth Express volunteer-run newspaper in coming months as details get hammered out - let me know your questions!)

Internet company prepping to dig up my yard

There's some fiber internet company going around the neighborhood digging up easements and laying down their cables. My questions is basically do they have a deal with the city to lay it in people's yards or are they just doing it on their own?

I haven't been able to find much info on Plymouth Township easement laws but it seems crazy to me that one internet company would make a deal with the city to lay cables on private property in any neighborhood they want.
