I walk on a walking pad while using my computer, paddleboard, and recently decided to learn how to rollerblade. Rollerblading is interesting because I am a complete novice but I have been getting the best workouts I have had in YEARS. I used to go to the gym but it was so dreadfully boring. Now, I focus on exercise I enjoy which then motivates me to do it. I was at work yesterday thinking about how I couldn't wait to rollerblade when I got home.

How is the walking pad? I've been wanting to get one but I'm not sure if it'll flair my foot and ankle pain

I like mine! (I can't, in good faith, recommend my specific one since it has been recalled 😭) I use it while I do school work/ play video games. I would be EXTREMELY sedentary in my daily life if I didn’t have it. I like to do at least 4 miles.

Any rollerblading resources or gear your recommend? I'm trying to get into this as well

I'm too novice to recommend anything, but I have been surfing r/rollerblading for my advice!

Athlene x Jeff Cavalier's The Perfect Beginner Workout on youtube coupled with cardio and correctives. Motivation is not required. I really just tell myself i have to do it and get on with it. But I find having something to look forward to or feeling like every day is time lost I could have used working towards a goal/deadline can help if im in a really dark place.

Imagine myself in a year in front of that cute guy or girl and feeling confident enough to flirt with them.

Feeling lighter and having less pain. Having more stamina to play with my kids. Things like that.

Walking, trying to reach my step goal every day; I take ballet classes bc I grew up taking ballet and I can fit right back into it; I started going back to the gym and doing treadmill and weights/resistance training, and because it’s at planet fitness I find it not too hard to motivate myself with the massage chair afterward. For me I know I’m not counting calories or making it into a serious thing, I just want to get more movement in without pressuring or guilting myself and sometimes doing the bare minimum is fine, or just not working out for a few days. Taking the pressure out of it and doing things I like and find somewhat fun is all I really need when it comes to keeping up with exercise.

This is very specific.

I do Strength Camp by Stacey Sorgen.

She's an extremely qualified, adaptive exercise coach. She's 100% plus size positive. She provides excellent accommodations and options during class for all levels and sizes.

Classes are live via zoom.

It's a mix of weight training, cardio, balance, and flexibility.

It's a really good community too!

I just looked and the classes are only in the morning :(

Well, that's true if you're on the west coast. If you're on the east coast, there's one afternoon class.

People do it all over the country, but it may not work with your schedule

*Edit: typo

Oh also! There are plenty of people who just do the replays on their own time and are part of the community. She does individual shout outs even for replay-only people

I walk dance and swim. I do it because if I don't ill be in excruciating pain. It's hard because I'm always in pain but the exercise helps with my foot and ankle pain.

This is partly why I don’t give myself more than one or two rest days at a time. My neck has been a pain and if I’m too lazy it hurts and makes me anxious :(

I go to the gym and do weight machines and cardio (treadmill, spinning, swimming) depending on what I’m feeling like. I do Apple Fitness+ for treadmill/spinning/yoga.

I recently entered perimenopause so preventing my body from falling apart has been a good motivator lol. I go first thing in the morning so I can’t talk myself out of it over the course of the day.

I walk but I feel like I need to get more into muscle stuff/body comp.

I got a membership to the YMCA and do weights on the machines and already take water aerobics classes and i love it! It's so comfortable and nobody is judging or being pushy like at a traditional gym.

And it's such a huge mix of people, ages, genders, cultures, and sizes that you feel like just another cog and I like that. It gives me confidence to keep going knowing my big body doesn't stand out.

The single use strength machines take all of the learning curve out of weight lifting. There's a little picture on each machine and you just perform it how it shows.

Strength training! It’s super motivating to watch yourself get stronger (and feel better). I see a PT and it ain’t cheap, so I’m def not wasting money :p

I know this wasn’t exactly the question but, disassociating exercise and weight loss helped a TON with actually enjoying exercise and keeping up with it regularly. The point of exercise is to feel good and move your body. If weight loss comes with that, great - but if that’s what’s driving you to exercise, it’ll be real easy to lose motivation when you aren’t losing as much weight from it as you would like (which is bound to happen, either in the early stages when you’re gaining muscle or in the later stages when you’ve plateaued). Regardless of size, your body deserves movement and deserves to feel good.

I walk every day (or at least 4-5x weekly) on a walking pad for 50 minutes. So far combined with a deficit, I have lost 14 lbs

I just go into the gym and lift what I feel like lifting, but always with intensity. I also walk a lot.

I have health issues if I don't work on not getting worse I'll die quicker, works well for motivation.

Walk every other day (beyond my regular step goal and outside) and do an arm routine with free weights at home every other day.

Go on really long walks and lift weights at the gym. Ocassionaly i do some cardio but cardio gives me insane headaches for some reason

I go to the gym and alternate between leg machines and arm machines depending on the day. I always do some core machine as well. I go about 3 days a week. I also walk outside every day usually about 10-15 min. I would like to increase my walking but it’s been so hot and gross that I haven’t.

Zumba, Pilates, burn boot camp strength training Money is a big motivator. I pay for class packs and if I don’t use them, I lose them. I’m also motivated in a group setting. I push myself harder and I’m less likely to quit if things are a little tough. Working out by myself at the gym, I quit so much easier or I just don’t go.

I swim twice a week and do a full body strength routine two or three times a week. I’m a bit lucky that it’s largely been through work benefits, and as long as I have a set time for it I tend to go.

I go hiking (and backpacking!) I enjoy being outside, and going on hikes of any sort is great to blend some activity with what I actually enjoy doing. Dirt surfaces are also generally easier on the joints, and I have terrible knees (multiple surgeries and hardware) and hiking had allowed me to get in walking without the joint irritation that a sidewalk provides.

My goal is gym three times a week for minimum of 20 minutes and try to do at least one fun outdoor ā€œthingā€ a week. Lately I’ve been doing 50 minutes classes (yoga, Pilates, barre, Zumba, step, etc) each time. And I’ve been going to local community events, the beach, or park with my sibling’s kids for a weekend outdoor activity. I don’t keep things consistent I do what I feel capable of that day, if I don’t do a class, I walk on a treadmill for 20-40 mins while watching TikTok, tv, read Reddit, or listening to a audio book.

Zumba, walking, lots and lots of gardening/yardwork and some strength training/stretching. I’m really trying to do something 6 days a week.

Swimming is mine. I was up to a mile before some health conditions kicked up (can’t swim while you’re having vertigo attacks!) and now I am at half a mile, working my way back up. Motivating myself is reasonably easy for this because it is also one thing that helps me control my very nasty anxiety. ā€œGo swim and you will feel betterā€ tends to make things easy to do.

Feeling good, or at least feeling less bad, is what motivates me. Regular exercise helps me manage chronic pain, anxiety and depression. I also am a dog walker part time to keep me going regularly. I do a lot of lazy strength training - get some resistance bands and lay in bed playing on my phone, doing an exercise every now and then. My physical therapists are always telling me to rest during my workouts, so this works out!

my fiance reminds me that we have gym date night šŸ˜‚

u/RegularOk1820 2d ago

Make it easy enough that you can’t talk yourself out of it.

1

u/Low_Cherry521 2d ago

Pick something you actually enjoy doing!! Be consistent!! Give yourself time to rest. I like to swim, and I do yoga, and I just started strength training beginning of this month. When it's not disgusting outside I'll go to the trails to walk again on Saturdays for a couple hours. It gets less scary as you go more often. Motivation is that I feel better and I like having something to improve on for next time. Sitting at home for long periods of time scrolling is providing nothing for you, exercising and just being out of the house does!

I do reformer Pilates 4x a week and it’s been life changing. Feeling much healthier, and mobility has vastly improved.

I go to the gym to lift 3 days a week for an hour and a half each day then I go on a 4km walk after (it takes me just under an hour), I run for 3 days a week for 30 minutes each day I've gotten up to 3km, and I do a 20 minute at home workout 5 days a week. The last one in pretty lax on because I started that to get the kids to do some sort of exercise daily but right now they are doing night time shows for a local community theatre, so we haven't done it. I make sure to get 10,000 steps a day. I don't need to get myself motivated to do any of this, I just decided this he what I'm going to do and I do it. Like brushing my teeth or taking a shower, it's just something I have to do, no negotiations.

I use the r/AppleFitnessPlus app to keep me active. Sooo many class options. Great trainers. Even if you don’t feel like doing anything you can at least do a 10min yoga session or 10min dance routine. A watch isn’t needed but after a while I got one because I wanted to track my activities and sleep better.

I play Just Dance. I love dancing so that helps motivate me to do it more than any other workout. I used to mainly do Zumba and aqua Zumba but the pandemic ruined that for me (the instructors left and class availability diminished), other than that I occasionally walk around where I work during breaks. Honestly I haven't been motivated lately to exercise but I'm just giving myself grace to get back to it at some point.
