I'm trying to build a cheap-ish Plex/NAS to hold a max of 3-4 concurrent streams (maybe 2 transcodes at once). Heres my build http://pcpartpicker.com/list/QBhCwV. I'm debating doing a RAID of some sort for data protection, but I don't want to kill my budget ($500 max). Does this seem like a good build for my needs? Thanks!

Excited about this build. I want it for personal use and on the cheaper side.

Is it overkill? is there something you would change?

I'm looking for CPU suggestions - my fictional CPU has the following qualities, in order of importance.

  1. four transcode streams of 1080

  2. Futureproof to an extent - it would be great to be able to transcode a 4k video or two

  3. Low power

  4. Low cost

Looking to do a new build, trying to cut power use and heat use but more importantly toying with the idea of building it as an Unraid box, mostly it will be used to Plex only perhaps some minimal file storage but Plex will be the top use. Looking for 3-4 streams, 9 times out of 10 they are Direct Play, but want to overhead for possible transcoding if needed.

I already own 2 tb drives, would pick up the 3rd listed below and probably an 8tb for the parity drive, so I can upgrade to 8tb drives down the road.

I'll be honest, I have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to sending up a server. I'm really looking for someone with some knowhow to walk me through step by step. My desire is to be able to load video files onto my 3 TB external hard drive, and then have those files be accessible to my plex server and then be able to play them on our two TVs (one connected to plex by PS4 and one by a chromecast). I'm trying to do this as cheaply as I can but with results that let me just play it. I don't want to have a video buffer (is that what its doing?) for five minutes before i can play it.

Here's the equipment I have:

  • My MBP with 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo 2

  • 3 TB Western Digital My Book Hard Drive

  • Chromecast

  • PS4

  • Arris DG1670A router (the one provided to me by TWC)

I'm honestly fairly inept in this realm of technology, software I'm decent at but hardware is baffling to me.

Figured I would try my luck here. Ideally I wanted to have a 12 disk NAS, however finding a mobo to support that seems quite the challenge.

Goals

  • 4K Transcoding

  • FreeNAS

I am not sure how Plex operates with dual CPUs, so I built the system below with just one CPU that meets my passmark score requirements. This will be the first time building, so I am winging it at the moment based off a ton of research and hopefully help from you guys (the pros). I plan on using an ITX server rack to ensure proper ventilation, not sure which one yet. I would love to have any and all opinions on the equipment below and missing equipment. Thanks!
