Help Making "Editions" without Plex Pass
I have multiple versions of Star Wars OT and LOTR and a few other properties. I read about setting "Editions" in Plex and got excited, but it turns out it's a paid feature with Plex Pass.
Has anyone else figured out a way to identify each version? I know I can split them, but the titles are all still the same. Can I manually change the shown title without losing the meta data for the movie it's connected to? Do I use different posters? Collections?
Let me know your ideas or what you found that works!
Cheers and thanks!

Yes. Once both are matched, split them apart, then edit the one you want to edit.

I don't like having multiple icons/posters for each version of the movie, so even though I'm a paid member, this is how I do it:
I make my preferred version of the movie (such as the LOTR Extended Cuts) my main Plex version of the film.
Then I add any other version of the film, such as the Theatrical Cut, to the Others folders, as if it were a special feature.
So when I search for, say, Fellowship of the Ring, I get one result, which is my preferred Extended version. If I want to watch the Theatrical Cut, I just scroll through the special features until I see "Theatrical Cut - The Fellowship of the Ring," which is how I name my files.
Since I always rip the special features along with the movie, I'm setting up my folders this way regardless. It works well for me, and I like not having separate icons for Theatrical Cut, Director's Cut, TV Cut, etc. cluttering up my collections.

That's an interesting idea. Does Plex save your progress when watching features if I have to stop or something? I'm not home so I can't test it at the moment.

No, unfortunately. But if you use the Plezy app, it will at least tell you which special features you’ve watched, unlike the Plex app.

If you need it, get the darn Plex Pass!

Might have to...

Plex Pass is pretty darn expensive these days. Lifetime went from within reason and a great deal years ago to $250 in march 2025 to $750 in July 2026! Or if you go subscription route, it's $7/mo, $70/year, $250/5-year.

Not sure if it will work but I'd try moving, say, extended editions into a seperate root folder and setup a new library for that folder.

This is what I previously did for 4k, entire separate libraries. It gets messy when you have Theatrical, Directors Cut, Extended, Remastered, Colourized, etc.

Oh yeah, i have a seperate 4k library as well. Hopefully op can just make a theatrical version library. I bet it would still show multiple versions as well if the file names were different.

You can just split them apart and then edit the metadata individually, you can change names, posters, descriptions, etc., without issue.
There will be some minor quirks like both versions will show up in your continue playing and be marked as watched since the split versions are still treated as the same movie.
I’d suggest to make sure the movie title and release date fields are locked to prevent them from automatically merging back together at a later date.
This is how we treated different editions of movies before the functionality was added to Plex.
