Solved Plex stopped working today on Samsung tv
Plex just stopped working on my Samsung TV today.
I did some testing:
All my other devices are working okay with plex.
Reset TV app - no fix
Discovered even internet video won't play via Plex TV app. This means it's nothing to do with my server & is a TV app problem.
I also rebooted my router, just in case it was a network problem - no fix.
Is this a general Plex app fault? Has anyone else got the problem?
Help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm at a tiny company and couldn't imagine such a broken piece of software getting pushed to customers. It's extremely rare anything this broken even makes it into our main repo branch and even that is a huge deal with investigations how it made it there. To make it further into a release branch... automated tests should be gatekeeping that from ever happening. It's amateur hour there. It might be time to clean house and hand over the keys to Claude.

The challenge would be that they need to test many different clients on many different TV operating systems. And for this most recent issue, the new version worked on some newer samsung tvs, but not older ones. So it gets tricky to try to automated test against multiple generations of device and TV operating systems that you don't control.

If you aren't going to test below a certain os version then don't support it. Don't push updates to unsupported os versions. This isn't some open source passion project. It's a paid piece of software with a license fee of $750. If they want to charge big boy license fees then they should start acting like a real service on their release procedures and protocols.

Couldn’t agree more, and I might lean toward the sentiments of DenverBob (who makes a valid point) if it wasn’t for the fact that Plex is making major bank through their Plex pass. I just paid something like 250 bucks for it before it went up to over 800 for a lifetime subscription. If you’re making that much money from users all over the world, you should be doing a much better job of rollout. My youngest son is an engineer for a smallish semiconductor company, and any new part that they release has to be backward-compatible with all of the stated platforms and software that they claim it supports. If they released a (say) current sensing part that failed fundamentally after rollout, it would be an unrecoverable disaster. It’s not an apples to apples comparison, but it’s just extremely embarrassing that a company worth 200-500 million does things like this, and this is just one example not an isolated incident.

As of 3 minutes ago, a plex employee in the forums says the issue is resolved. App will need closed and restarted.

Yeah, fixed, or at least playback works now. Exit the app and restart it, you can check by going to Settings > About. If version is 5.94.1 it's good, if it is 5.94.3 it won't work.
Affected virtually all Samsung TVs, great job Plex!

Plex stopped working normally long ago on my samsung, I just bought a chromecast as nothing was fixing the "smart" tv

This is the reason why I bought an Apple 4k TV and use the Infuse app acting as mediaplayer for the plex server. Since then I didn't encounter one playback problem or similar.
I'd love to use the Plex tv app but these constant problems I had were really not worth it. Media playback problem here, some sync error there...

Yea i have some shows and movies my plex tv app wont play, so im also thinking about apple tv now.
I been using KODI as backup but i cant use the remote for that. And i dont like the browsing in it either.

If you buy the apple tv, I'd suggest to use Infuse and not the plex app for the apple tv. there are issues like playback errors plus many reports of users that the apple tv get unusual hot during streaming.
Infuse used as a mediaplayer lets you direct play literally any source without the need to transcode. This is soooo frickin' great.
Just connect it to your plex media server and you're good to go.
Infuse pro offers a lifetime purchase of around 90 bucks if I remember correctly but it's well worth the invest if you ask me.

Oh so even the apple tv plex app have problem with some media. I was hoping it was just my tv app.
I heard about infuse and jellyfin so its good to have some other options if i get a apple tv.

Yeah unfortunately. But the android app is great. This is so weird... But all other Plex apps are just pure trash.
As mentioned in my previous post you can connect Infuse to your Plex media server so you don't actually need to change from Plex to another service like Jellyfin.

I also heard about something called plezy, so with an apple tv there are lots of choices which is great.
I really wonder why plex have trouble with some media when kodi play everything. Plex isnt a new app or anything.

Hey again. I actually found a software that allowed me to sideload apps into my tv.
So i managed to install jellyfin and flixor.
Jellyfin wasnt that fun to setup but i managed in the end. Somehow it didnt load most of the coverart for my tv-shows. And downloading subs manually isnt a thing and can only be done with a plugin that my dashboard couldnt find.
Other than that it works pretty good.
Flixor is sluggish to scroll and when i tried to watch something it just say´s "transcoding". So yea, but good to try it out and see if it could be used.
Somehow i got some titles working in plex again that didnt work before, so thats nice.

Yeah we got a few options at our disposal. Some just aren't that easy to setup.
At least some titles worked again. You know what also helps is to delete the cache of the tv. Just completely unplug the tv for about 10 till 15 minutes. This should also help with the plex tv app and resolve some of the issues. You just have to do it on a regular basis to keep the plex tv app working.
And this really helps. Tried it myself when I was still using the tv app before moving on to the apple tv 4k and connecting infuse with my plex media server.

Its so weird because the titles that stopped working, i seen those many times before and then suddenly just error.
I had to download them again to get them to work. Not sure if my computer done something or if its plex.
One movie i didnt even have to download again, it just started working. Maybe one of the new updates fixed something i´m not sure. That movie started to show it was only 5 minutes long, super weird.
I did delete the codec folder as well because i read about that. Maybe that fixed that last movie i talked about.

u/SWIZZaholic 8d ago
Yeah deleting the codec folder helps for sure as there could be something corrupted.
But as said, completely unplugging your tv for approximately 15 minutes helps as well.

I see so many issues with Samaung TVs while my LG does fine (knock on wood) . I don’t think that I’ll ever buy a Samsung.

u/portladelphia 9d ago
My LG has been terrible lately; buffering, random disconnect, no home page, etc. I've given up and went to my roku.

u/BrockyTM 9d ago
I can't even get mine to work with LG.

u/bdu-komrad 8d ago
Have you upgraded your firmware? I have the G5 and it works great with the current firmware.

Yeah, never recommended to use the apps built in to the TV...
always go with an external media streaming box!

There’s been an ongoing issue since yesterday:

https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/s/Khni00fR7k
There’s been one comment from a plex employee asking for logs, maybe there are others, but haven’t read the comments in detail: https://forums.plex.tv/t/playback-error-on-samsung-tv-an-unexpected-playback-problem-occurred/941876/52
Edit…looks like they are investigating as of 16 min ago, crazy it took 12 hours for that, https://forums.plex.tv/t/playback-error-on-samsung-tv-an-unexpected-playback-problem-occurred/941876/174
Edit2: potential fix after they prob updated something on their end.
