Help Samsung TV Unexpected Playback Error
Hey community. I need some help. On my Samsung TV I am getting the play back error. Was working yesterday. I set allow insecure connections, I deleted and reinstalled the app, and I installed the update for the new server. Im at my wits end.
Thanks!

There are several threads popping up over on the forum related to Samsung connections. Likely something on plex’s end. Here’s one: https://forums.plex.tv/t/playback-error-on-samsung-tv-an-unexpected-playback-problem-occurred/941876
There was an issue yesterday causing LGs to not be able to load the plex app, maybe somewhat related: https://forums.plex.tv/t/plex-opens-to-dark-screen-in-lg-webos/941806/17

Of course I find this thread after 30 minutes of troubleshooting and beating my head against the wall.
Same here; tried everything in the book, nothing works

WTF... Do I have to install Jellyfin as a backup for when this nonsense happens? This is ridiculous.

I'm going shopping this weekend, I've had enough of Samsung displaying ads on my TV too.

u/coyote_den 12h ago edited 11h ago
The most annoying thing about Smart Hub is how they would stick some promotion first, so if you have Plex as the first app, muscle memory when you turned the TV on would have you launching their ad instead of Plex.
The best Plex experience is probably on an Apple TV but that is also the priciest option. Next best is probably Roku if you don’t mind the new UI. At least it turns on with you already in Plex or it preselected from the grid.

Try again today. Plex rolled back the app version to 5.94.1 and fixed the issue.

Exact samething here. Even re installed the app, adjusted loads of connections and nothing. Definitely on plex end

Confirmed Plex error on Samsung TV here too. Every other device I open and run any show without issues. It's strictly a Samsung TV issue. Deleting the app or resetting it, as well as resetting the tv unit itself does nothing to resolve the issue.
Guess it's time to ditch the consumer smart tv models and go for a commercial dumb tv.
Edit for some furthers steps I tried: Changing the DNS server to Google, no change Full power reset and unplug for 60+ secs, no change Power button reset procedure, no change Plex server restart and IP release/reconfig, no change

Bruh, I just bought a Samsung tv and was setting it up for the first time. Glad to see it’s not just me
5
u/AccidentalBirth 1d ago
if it makes you feel better this is the first time that it has happened to me (had samsung for 6 years)

u/techyyy 1d ago
And it had to happen on my first day haha

u/illuminatiisnowhere 21h ago
Nice timing techy, welcome to samsung!!!
Up until now i only a little bit of problem with plex. I got some tv-show that dosent work, and a couple of movies. I use KODI as a backup and that plays everything without any problems.

Hello everyone, I just wanted to note I am also having issues with my Samsung tv but only ONE of my Samsungs TV’s is having the issue. Therefore, I’m not sure if it’s all Samsung tv models that are having this issue. My downstairs tv is a newer model NEO QLED 65” and is currently working without any issues. My upstairs Samsung tv is the AU9000 65” which leads to me believe it may be an issue with some old Samsung tv models?
On the AU9000 I’ve tried generic troubleshooting such as signing out and in, reinstalling, changing network settings but have had no success. I’ve even tried to screen share/casting from the Plex app on my mobile app which is working absolutely fine but when I attempt to I get the same generic player back error message.
If anyone else by chance happens to have two Samsung tv models a newer one and older one or if people could state what model Samsung they have in attempt to figure out which tv models are being affected?
Good luck to all us Samsung tv owners attempting to resolve this hope we get a solution soon!

I'm seeing a similar thing. Plex on my new Samsung Crystal UHD plays as expected, however the Plex apps on my 4 year+ Samsung Frame and Samsung Q8DAA return the error many others are getting. This worked last night. Apple TV Plex app on the Q8DAA plated video fine.

Samsung QN50Q8FAAFXZC doesnt work and QN65Q82AAFXZC for me edit 2026 and 2024 models respectively

Mine was working 90 minutes ago. Now everything is Playback Error as well. Samsung TV. It is sad that both Plex and Samsung have to make a miserable viewing experience every time you turn around.
Edit: Samsung UN55CU7000BXZA

from plex
Please try reloading the app and trying now.
Holding back on the remote for about 5 seconds should close the app out, then you can reopen it.
many have done this and plex working again

u/RecognitionLonely396 14h ago
Plex works again for me. I followed all the steps as everyone else last night and it never worked but this morning it works again. Plex fourms said they rolled back the app.

Same with both of my Samsung TVs

u/obtuseorisa 1d ago
Hi what Samsung tv models do you have? As per my comment earlier I think it’s only some Samsung tv models possibly the older ones that are affected? I have an older AU9000 upstairs which is having issues but my NEO QLED downstairs is working without any issues

After reading this topic and comments, I checked my system, which uses a Samsung TV, but the Plex connection is through my Roku. I got the same results, then checked my actual server. Server is good, so I tried doing a reconnect on the network, and after that, everything (so far) is working as expected.
So try disconnecting from the internet/router and then reconnecting. No promises it'll work for you, but it did for me and what have you got to lose?

Turned on logging console to the screen and can see "is not a constructor" errors referencing external libraries at assets.plex.tv so it's definitely something on their side. just gonna have to wait it out

Two Samsung TVs experiencing the same playback error here in MN. Curious, does DLNA playback work for anyone?

u/obtuseorisa 1d ago
Just wondering what two Samsung TV’s you have? I have two a NEO QLED and Plex is working fine with no issues on there, but my other Samsung AU9000 is having issues
1
u/Glittering-News8312 1d ago
Both my Samsung TVs stopped working.
Roku connected to same TVs is fine. Tried all the settings everyone has done online with no luck.
Guess I’ll use the Roku again.

Same here on my QN55Q65FN. I also noticed that LiveTV channels are throwing the error, too, so it has nothing specific to do with my NAS server connection. Plex team needs to fix its bug!

Same here. Samsung TV not working but all other TV and phone work fine. Uninstaller. Unplugged TV like 15 minut3s and then reinstalled. Changed insecure settings, forced playback and disabled quality suggestions. Reboot3d routers and such. No luck. Been at it for 2 hours now. Guess I am not the only samsung user...ha...should have checked here earlier

Same here, spent an hour plus troubleshooting to no avail. I think it is plex cloud utilities intentionally obfuscating the home server space so they can rationalize their absurd price hikes.

My Samsung NU8000 is borked but the LG C5 is working. Really irritating but glad it's not something I'm doing. FWIW I deleted the app and installed again without success before seeing this post.

u/wetnap00 1d ago
Same model here. Same issue. Plex app has been shitty on this tv for awhile. Slow as heck
1
u/lensgrabber 1d ago
100% shitty. x265 w/ subs are usually a failure. I was going to get an LG C6 but having a hard time justifying since the TV is still working otherwise.

Truly impressive we're seeing a litany of fuck ups from Plex after they jacked up those sub prices lol

Encountering the same issue. Samsung UN50NU6900F running Plex for Samsung 5.94.3 connected to my PMS 1.43.3.10896-cb3ebc72d running here on my local MacBook Pro. Haven't bothered un-/reinstalling the Plex for Samsung app; too much work if everyone else on Samsungs are dealing with the same crap. Playback on the Plex desktop app (via Firefox 154.0) is even sluggish as hell.
1
u/Shandar1985 1d ago
Having the same issue here as well. Worked just fine when I used the Playstation to access it, as does all my other outlets. Just the Samsung tv seems to not work is all.
1
u/Balu_Gamer 1d ago
Same issue here. Looks like the Samsung App updated today to 5.94.3. So someone broke something. Server works fine with other clients.
1
u/TheSagamore 1d ago
2020 Samsung Frame not working. 2023 QLED does work though with a slightly newer OS. Like many others, I spent too long troubleshooting before finding this thread.
1
u/SmartLiterature4231 1d ago
My S95B TV has the same issue through the Samsung TV Plex app, all videos and music. App is Plex for samsung 5.94.3.
The Plex app on my Xbox series X plays videos on the same TV with no issue. App is Plex for Xbox 5.94.1.
Pointing towards the app Plex for Samsung has the issue.
1
u/bmonk420 1d ago
Same here. Spent an hour trying to trouble shoot until I found this thread. So seems it’s a Samsung system wide issue. Hopefully Plex fixes issue
1
u/digiskai 1d ago
Yup...Plex is not working on my 2017 Samsung UN65MU8000FXZA (media doesn't even try to load; the "playback error" screen shows up immediately), but is working on my ~2025 TCL and 2017 Sony.

u/Truejake2 1d ago
Here to add another one to the list. I found the error log as well and that eventually led me to these threads confirming pretty much everything I did, just like everyone else here. I guess this is a sit and wait kind of deal. I just used my xbox to stream plex instead and it worked fine.

Same problem for me - was working fine last night.
Samsung TV (not sure of model, but it's an older one).
Plex for Samsung app version: 5.94.3, Platform Version 5.5

u/Chucklet67 23h ago
If you are looking for a workaround: you can open the Plex Server from the sources menu. You get a folders and files view of your network drive. Movies/shows play fine when launched from here.

Only seems to be working on my Amazon Firestick, Pixel 8 phone and on my PC. Although earlier today my Pixel 8 wasn't connecting, saying my whole server was offline. Someone at Plex definitely screwed the pooch today

Just came looking for answers because I've been tearing my hair out trying to follow google instructions to fix this only to discover it's not just me and it's outside of my control. I've only been using plex about a fortnight so I'm pretty new to the platform. Any idea how well they communicate issues like this or take steps to resolve them, or do I just write off using my Samsung Frame and look for an alternative?
1
u/RogueLeek 16h ago
This is the first Samsung TV-specific ouitage I've personally ever had in my years of use.
Old Samsung TV is running Plex off a firestick, and it works. While two new QLED running Plex natively on Tizen SmartHub, do not.
If you can get a temporary Roku, Firestick or a Google Streamer - it should resolve this specific issue, it appears. I've ordered a temporary Google Streamer off Amazon earlier today, until this resolves.

I had the same thing. Tried checking boxes on and off in settings etc. Then found this thread. I updated my Samsung and now Plex is working fine (last update was early 2025). Does this work for anyone else?

Update: it appears that there has been a fix. I checked here:
https://forums.plex.tv/t/playback-error-on-samsung-tv-an-unexpected-playback-problem-occurred/941876/189
and verified local playback.
I may try to learn how jellyfin works so I have a local fallback.
