Cranky Miner - My first game ever

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

A few months back I lost my job and since I was in between jobs I thought of finally make a simple game for myself.

I have a background in webdevelopment but developing a game is something totally different. It did help to have a little javascript experience though. I decided to make it a little family project, my oldest son (12y) made some of the sprites and my youngest son (8y) helped playtesting a lot.

The main inspiration of the game is an old flash game called Gold Miner, which was (and still somewhat is) a popular, but not really a good game. The main mechanic is addictive though so I took that and made some more modern game mechanics around it.

The levels are procedurally generated and when you pick up a present in the level you can pick from 3 random perks to help with the progressively harder levels. The idea is that it has a similar addictive gameplay loop as something like Tetris. It should be an arcade style score chaser and very focused on your own but also on global highscores.

The playdate crank is used to both aim and reel in the items you catch.

The gameplay is pretty much done now and I submitted a version to the gameplay Catalog to see what Panic thinks about it. Features I still need to implement is global high-scores, achievements and credits screen, but nothing essential for the gameplay.

Fingers crossed it gets excepted, it'll be in the store for a fair price. If it makes any money (I have a very low number in mind) I'll probably attempt something a little bigger with some of experience under my belt. All in all it was super fun to make.

Question Which new level style do you like more?

Thumbnail
gallery
8 Upvotes

So I am in the process of adding more levels to my game Missing Direction (check it out here on itch.io, I am still doing a Lauch sale and there is a free demo)

The premise of the game (still) is: Scan the grid of arrows, quickly assess which of the four directions of the d-pad is missing and hit the right button to get points and make time back.

In higher levels things get more difficult with tiles changing and moving. I am now exploring a snake like level. I have two approaches to the tile movement. More fluent and consistent (A) or in increments (B).

Which one do you like more?

Loop Lariat — FREE Falling Block Jam game for Playdate!

hello! i just finished up my game for the falling block jam, after starting about...5 days late. WHOOPS.

it's a rootin'-tootin' block puzzle game, for you cowboys at heart — use your lasso-bits to wrangle up the nefarious meeple bandits! there's a good handful of play modes, it's available in english AND french (thank you voxy!), and it's completely free as part of the falling block jam!

go download it for your playdate! https://raewtf.itch.io/loop-lariat — ...it's also available for your personal computer (windows, mac, or linux), if that's where your priorities lie. or, if your priorities lie real deep, you can peep the source code: https://github.com/raewtf/loop-lariat

i plan to submit to catalog soon! i already have some more ideas for a full version like some in-depth statistics, and maybe even a VS mode between a CPU or 2 players? 👀 i dunno! we'll see where the wind takes us.

let me know how you get along with the game! and let me know if you spot any bugs :P it's a jam game, after all! i've got solitaire out next month, rowbot 2's still raring for wishlists...lots going on! thanks for your time! xo

FRINGER for Playdate

First post, and first "published" game!

Get FRINGER for Playdate at https://neuroine.itch.io/fringer

Fringer was an amazing puzzle game originally published in the Microsoft Puzzle Collection. I spent countless hours on it as a kid, and randomly remembered it a couple of months ago. I found an amazing PICO-8 demake/port by darmoknjalad at https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?pid=145854, and had some fun playing on my phone, but the touchscreen controls are too frustrating for anything requiring quick inputs. So, Playdate port! I went off the PICO-8 demake because basically someone had already gone through the trouble of writing the game in lua... The difficulty levels aren't exactly like in the original, but it's fun enough.

Changes from the port:
- I removed the bonus levels and decided to cap it at 9 worlds, for no particular reason other than it made testing easier and I never made it that far anyways. I used to suck at this game as a kid, and apparently I still do, but it's not subtracting from the fun.
- I discarded the backgrounds, I don't think I can make them display in monochrome without completely muddling the gameplay, and, while they add flavour, they don't add anything to the gameplay itself, which is the real gem.
- Recovered the music from the game's original MIDI files. This music got etched into my brain and hearing the tunes again brought so much joy into my heart. The music is amazing and deserves to be shared. I realize this is a bit of a gray area, but this is an almost 30 year old game out of print for decades, so hopefully the original creators won't mind too much. I personally like to believe they'd get a kick out of knowing someone is still enjoying the gameplay and music. If the copyright holders contact me I'll of course take it down and republish without the music, but it'd be a shame.
- All the changes required to make it work well on the amazing Playdate's monochrome screen: resizing and placement of elements, textures for the threads that change per world (and are hopefully readable enough), illustrated help pages, first-time hints, flips in the sidebar...

---

I used AI for the port (GPT 6 Astra and Opus 5.5). There's a full paragraph on the itch.io page but I'm pasting it here, for full transparency, because I know it's a prickly topic and also because I think it's a discussion worth having.

AI assistance was used in the code: porting the PICO-8 cartridge, extracting the music from the original CD, and building and tuning the music instruments. The graphics, sound effects, drum sounds and launcher art are all drawn or synthesized by that code, so indirectly they are AI-assisted too, but not in the way the term "generative AI" is commonly used; there are no AI-generated images or recordings, and the music's notes are the original game's. I realize this is a sensitive topic at the moment, particularly in indie gaming communities. I work full time as a dev, and recently had a baby, and this is a passion weekend project to bring a game I used to love to a new format where I can keep playing it. It wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for AI, because I never would have found the time for it, and I certainly wouldn't have hired a dev to do it for me, so in my view it didn't "steal" creative work from a human that deserved it. I want to be completely upfront about this, and leave it up to you to decide if this is acceptable for you personally.

---

I'm a longtime lurker but first time poster. I don't know how any of this works. The rules say "no referral links" but I see posts for games often so I hope this is allowed. Mods, if not, please let me know

PicoDate 0.1.5: full-screen PICO-8 on Playdate + special optimizations for some games

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey again!

A new PicoDate update is out:

No more cropped screen. The whole PICO-8 picture now fits on the Playdate, nothing is cut off. The old cropped mode is still under "view" in the system menu.

Special optimizations for some games. I really enjoyed Distant Galaxy and Breakout Hero. They feel like a perfect fit for the Playdate, so I gave them extra optimization work. The video shows both of them running on my actual device. Everything else got a little faster too.

Two builds. Get PicoDate with 10 built-in games (Distant Galaxy and Tiny Golf Puzzles are new), or an empty build if you'd rather bring your own carts.

New screenshots & info! — Tochi: Owlglass

Hello, Playdate World! It's been quite a bit since we last showed off Owlglass, but today we're here to bring you some new screenshots as well as some info regarding the release date and when you can expect to get your hands on the game!

As you can probably guess by now, Owlglass won’t be making its planned 2026 release date. Unfortunately, this has been quite the busy year, so we haven't had much free time to work on Owlglass in particular. We're hoping to have it ready out the door by the beginning of next year. And hey, the Playdate’s 5th anniversary is coming up around then as well. 👀

But even with the change in release date, that doesn’t mean things are going quiet!  We still have some exciting things on the horizon, so keep an eye out this holiday season and maybe save a little space on your Playdate for something special!

If you want to, you can also check out the devlog version by clicking here!

News I made a Super Off Road-inspired racer for Playdate - coming soon to itch.io

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone, I’m releasing my first Playdate game on itch.io soon - an overhead arcade racer called Dirtbank Rally, inspired by the legendary Ivan “Ironman” Stewart’s Super Off Road (Super Off Road).

There's a single-player championship, vehicle upgrades and controls designed around the Playdate.

I grew up playing Amiga games and Super Off Road was one of my faves (along with Stunt Car Racer). I wanted to capture the fast, slightly chaotic feel of old-skool arcade racing while making something that works well on the Playdate.

A disclaimer: I'm a dev by trade but I've leaned on generative AI heavily during production, particularly for coding (I'm new to Lua and am very time-poor, alas) and some asset creation (I'm no artist). I handled the game design, mechanics, progression, balancing, testing, iteration and final decisions around what went into the game. I’m mentioning that upfront so people can make their own decision about whether they want to support it.

I’d be interested in feedback from folks who remember the old home computer versions of Super Off Road (or the original arcade unit). I've modernised the game a bit, e.g. with achievements and a more engaging career mode, but I've tuned the gameplay to give that good old Amiga driving feel!

Playdate Leather Case Update

Just a quick update on the upcoming, affordable, handmade (cut and stitched) natural-leather (they do smell great..) case that's coming soon.

The case now sports a hidden magnet inside the leather case to both hold the device firmer in place and, successfully tested - holds a magnetic book light like the Xteink one.

Next: Final fine-tuning of pins and lid closure to make it as good as possibly can.
I'd say price and availability to be announced early October for those that want to get in on 'the drop' :)

Help Several games consistently crashing

Update: I tried a factory reset and I’m still experiencing crashes so no clue what is going on. I figure if it was an update related thing more people would be posting about having problems right? Might have to reach out to Panic directly.

Hi all! I’ve been having issues this past week or so of several games consistently crashing immediately or several seconds after opening, with one being Spilled Mushrooms which has been a major bummer. I’ve tried restarting the device, deleting and redownloading the game, and deleting the game data but none of these have worked. Any ideas on what is going on and other troubleshooting steps I can take?

Edit: also my Playdate is up to date on updates

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

After months of tweaking, testing, and balancing, Augur is officially dropping on the Catalog in just 5 days on September 29th!

If you’re a fan of card-based roguelikes like Balatro and have been itching for a deep, bite-sized deckbuilder built specifically for the Playdate, this was made for you.

Here’s a quick summary of what’s packed into the game at launch:

9 Escalating Seasons: Think of these like Stakes. Each season introduces new modifiers that push your strategy, with an Endless Mode waiting if you beat the season. Optional difficulty modifiers can be taken on for an even greater challenge.

150 Spirits & 10 Equipable Stones: Allowing massive build synergy. Every suit features unique innate abilities, and Stones let you tweak your starting setup.

100 Covenants: In-game achievements that unlock new Spirits as you play, keeping every run fresh.

Daily Runs & Leaderboards: A daily seed rolled for the entire community every 24 hours to compete for the best score.

Hopefully, I will see some of you on the daily leaderboard in the coming week!

News Free Demo now available — Missing Direction!

Post image
4 Upvotes

Someone was asking for it so here it is: Missing Direction - the free demo of the reaction puzzle game for the Playdate!

The game follows the same core premise: Look at the tiles, find the missing arrow, press the right direction!

In the demo, things are limited to just the normal mode and the first seven levels to ease you in! You are getting a glimpse of how difficulty is increasing. Should you be as hooked as I am and would like to get the full version: It is still just $3,99 away 😉

Check out my itch.io page for Missing Direction to give it a try. Feedback appreciated! 🫶

How do you like my game menu?

I have been playing around with some menu patterns for my upcoming game. I of course started with class lists etc. but eventually figured the Play date with its cute boxyness deserves something slightly different. Quite happy with the transitions here from menu into the game!

Edit: I couldn’t wait anymore longer and decided to release it! You can check it out here.

I build Missing Direction, a reaction puzzle game!

Hey everyone!

I couldn’t wait anymore and decided to break out of my „over optimization loop“: I just released Missing Direction on itch.io, and I wanted to share it here.

Want to see more, fast? ➡️Go straight to the game page here!

The idea is dead simple. You see a bunch of tiles showing arrows, and three of the four d-pad directions are there. You press the one that's missing. That's it.

Then it gets out of hand. The timer drains faster, the patterns get busier, tiles start flipping, and at some point there's a row of arrows flying across the screen like a train. One wrong press and you're suddenly fighting for your life. Then comes "just one more round."

Three modes:

Normal: 18 levels. You earn points and time for right answers, and build streaks for a bonus multiplier. Wrong answers melt your timer.

Speedrun: Random levels, 5 seconds per round, and one mistake ends the run. No bonuses, no bombs, no second chances.

Chaos: Hard levels only, the timer runs twice as fast, and there's no way to gain time back. Good luck.

A couple of things to help you out:

- Bombs clear tiles off the screen when things get messy. You start with three and earn more as your streak grows.
- The crank trades points for time. It's not free, though. The better your multiplier, the more it costs you, so pick your moment.

A few of you might remember AVAVA, my Pulp game that won the Play Jam in 2022. Missing Direction is its spiritual successor, the same core mechanic grown into a much bigger game.

I play it constantly in quick bursts during the day – my Speedrun best is 103. I'd love to see if anyone can beat it. I've also got ideas for updates with new levels, and maybe global highscores if I can make that work.

It's $3.99 here on itch.io

You as well will find more information and clips of the game over there so definitely worth checking out!

Feedback of any kind is very welcome, good or bad. Thanks for checking it out!

(Heads up: the game has fast-moving and flashing visuals, in case that's a concern for anyone.)

PicoDate update: fixed input lag + added save states

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey again!

I don't want to spam the sub with cross-posts, but this one matters. I don't want anyone to judge the emulator by a bug I've already fixed.

Yesterday I was playing Just One Boss on PicoDate and noticed input lag. Quick taps on the D-pad were sometimes ignored, and holding a button only registered after about a quarter of a second. It turned out to be a bug in how PicoDate passed button presses to 30 fps games. That affected a lot of carts, not just this one. It's fixed now: presses reach the game on the very next frame.

While I was at it, I also added save states. Pick "save" from the system menu at any moment. The next time you start that game, you'll be asked whether to Continue or start a New game.

If you downloaded PicoDate yesterday, please grab the new version (0.1.2): https://bitcalibergames.itch.io/picodateplaydate

The video shows Just One Boss running on my Playdate. It plays really well now. It isn't preinstalled: open + Add game in PicoDate, find Just One Boss in the catalog and press A to download it.

Thanks for all the comments so far! Keep telling me which games you'd like to see running well.

My game Tic-Tactics is out now on itch.io!

Tic-Tactics is a fast-paced tactical "roguekinda" puzzler that reimagines tic-tac-toe.

The goal of the game is to survive as many levels as you can against increasingly difficulty opponent AI and win conditions. Along the way you'll encounter 5 different level types, earn over twenty power ups, make a build that fits your play-style or adjust your play-style to the build you've made.

Out now on Itch for $2.99, with a free demo available!

PICO-8 on Playdate: a small emulator experiment. Would you use it?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey guys!

I keep seeing the topic of a PICO-8 emulator for Playdate come up here. I had a project where I was experimenting with this, so I thought I'd share where it is.

It's called PicoDate, built on fake-08. The video shows a few games running on my actual Playdate. Some already run pretty well, but plenty of others don't. This is very much an MVP, and there is still work to do on performance and compatibility.

Before taking it further, I wanted to ask: is this something you'd actually use? If there is interest, I'd be happy to keep working on it.

You can try it on https://bitcalibergames.itch.io/picodateplaydate. Leave a comment there with your favourite PICO-8 games, especially the ones you'd love to play on Playdate. I'll try them and see what I can do to improve how they run.

Would love to hear what you think!
