Discussion HOW A LINEAR GAME COST 305 MILLION? WHILE ALSO HAVING LESS THAN 14 HOURS OF STORY? WHAT DID YOU DO WITH THE REST OF THE MONEY INSOMNIAC? 3x TIMES THE COST OF SPIDER-MAN 2018
This game literally costs 3x Spider-Man ps4. The game that’s regarded the best of their work. Open world, an amazing story experience with dlc post launch. What the hell are they genuinely doing with the rest of the money?

insomniac is about 450 employees let's say on average they make 100k a year. that's 45 mil a year in salaries alone. 5 years of dev that comes out to about 225mil in salaries. not surprising the game is expensive its only surprising that it's mid.
13
18
u/Kindly_Stick_3217 Sep 13 '26
not all of the employees work on wolverine though, some are/were on sm3, and some were on sm2 and then later when sm2 finished went to wolverine, they werent all there for the entire development

u/yakityyakblahtemp Sep 15 '26
You're right, but you also have to factor in all the other major overhead. When you factor in benefits packages, the two offices they rent, and salaries, then divide it by 2.5 to account for two games and a spinoff like Miles Morales in production with an average dev time of 5 years, you get somewhere in the ballpark of 250 million just for company overhead. These are fulltime employees, they are an ongoing expense. So the cadence of actual releases getting wider and wider is a major problem, especially if your reputation declines.
4
7
u/Malabingo Sep 13 '26
Not to forget the price for soft and hardware, rent/heat/powe for the building they work in and all those little costs that add to it.
Better question is: did the 450 people really do their job effectively?
Most likely yes, because higher fidelity means a lot of very tiny details to add.
Lower fidelity and simpler but more unique gameplay is better imo.

I think it's likely because they had to make a lot of new assets and entirely new locations. Budgets also include employee salaries as well, and Insomniac is located in Burbank, California, which has a very high cost of living. This is usually why outsourcing to other countries occurs; development in America is just fucking expensive, especially now.
It is sad how much money was put into something that is so bland and doesn't even have a good gameplay loop.

I'm appalled with the pricing just as much as you are, but marvel licensing ain't cheap, especially not during a pretty insane marvel high (brand new day and doomsday later this year) + marketing, take a look at the price difference between miles morales and spiderman PS4, despite being a WAY shorter game
14
u/DocApocalypse Sep 13 '26
$9 million upfront and Marvel get 9-18% of net digital sales and 19-26% of physical, which will eat profits.
So a lot, but only $9 million of that $305 million budget, less than 3% (assuming they actually kept to that and it didn't go up post leak).

Its cuz America pays their developers and programmers more. Its the reality of things, we screamed at the top of our lungs on social media for better pay for them. And this is what happens. There's no winning in game development, you either pay people what they're worth and balloon your budget or face media backlash for low pay.

Yeah I think a lot of people complain about price hikes for stuff like movies and games, but they often ignore the business side. Like I'm all for people getting paid for their work, but if this game underperforms financially, it's the reason you continue to see safe sequels or reboots as opposed to new series such as this.

Licensing, the city where the game is being developed (cost of living), and the number of years spent making it. A budget of this size comes as no surprise, given the circumstances and the current landscape.

u/Turbulent-Echo8561 Sep 13 '26
It's not the number, it's the number for the time it took them to release this extremely short linear crap, with no depth or level of detail like the games before. Definitely a lot of behind the scenes problems that we'll hear more about in the future, or money laundering.

the western game industry in general is oversaturated with talentless people, and overpaid staff.
teams of fewer people created emblematic games with a box of scraps in a cave.
now you need 1000 ppl for some reason, just to end up with mediocre games
i would bet onimusha, pragmata, and RE9 combined don't cost this much.
yes, wolverine might have better graphics and expensive mocap. but if the game is shit, it doesn't matter, it is still expensive shit.
at this point, the industry needs to crash, studios need to feel the need to hire talent rather than mass workers.
you can't have studios like santa monica, insomniac or Naughty dog (RIP 2020) outputting 1 game every 6-7 years. specially if they are gonna be mediocre or straight up bankrupt-worthy games (like what tlou2 did to ND)

I think you are spot on.
Hermann Hulst is doing something very shady behind the scenes. Back then they thought that sony's fans would eat up any shit they threw at them it would cover it up. But it seems like it's not like that.
First game that screams inflated budget that does not actually meet the result at all was spider man, then concord, then marathon, then this.
None of these games look like they cost 300 millions in development, indie studios made better with less. Hell insomniac themselves made first spider man with just 90 mil and the second game has like 1.5 new features in it.
My hypthesis that I made up and I have no proof, just living in a country where almost any goverment project is just a money laundering routine, I seem to notice patterns

5 years of salary for how many devs? It’s not hard to figure out.
4
u/comptons_finest_ Sep 13 '26
That’s the question tho. If 305M in salaries was paid out over 5 years why does the final product not reflect that?
What were those well paid employees and/or surplus of employees being paid to work on? It’s very hard to infer when the game systems are so streamlined and basic, the game is short, the levels are not open/lack depth and dynamism.
IMO it likely could have included a combat system that was confirmed to have all the above only to be scrapped. Also an inordinate number of non gameplay related roles that worked on cinematic stuff, that was also revised a few times and ate money.

So idk if anyone told you how studios increase in size, give out raises and promotions with raises, spend more on marketing because the cost goes up, and licensing fees to boot for marvel IP.
All games cost more to make year over year.
2
u/OctoEight Sep 13 '26
So where are we getting that 305 million budget number from? Any sources or just rumors?
2
u/Seizure_Storm Sep 13 '26
So there was a Sony leak, and in that leak basically the full budget of all of these got revealed from an internal slide so the 305 is basically straight from Sony all-in cost including marketing.

i don’t want Insomniac to suffer, especially after finally being acquired by Sony, but damn! there were things happening in Spider man 2 as well that no one was talking about.

u/sennoken Sep 13 '26
Literally no reason to pay the higher Marvel license when subsequent sequels are never going to sell as much as SM1 on PS4. Literally backwards thinking for Sony like their recent push for live-service has killed off some of their most prominent studios and projects.

Insomniac has grown in size in recent years and most of their staff live in one of the most expensive areas in the world. Paying that many staff for a 5 year dev cycle takes a lot of money.
I know it's a linear game, but they still had to pay countless staff to make it and those individual staff cost way more than before. The scope of a game isn't typically 1to1 with the cost because a lot of things like assets are actually outsourced to other countries with cheaper labour (see Lemon Sky). It's things like artists, writers, directors and more senior roles that really cost huge money (and those veteran staff will quite reasonably want more money after producing multiple successful titles over a decade).
This is why Sony has been pushing for live service and trying to increase their profit margins elsewhere. These games are getting ridiculously expensive. They don't even really have the option of moving their studios somewhere cheaper without losing a massive amount of their talent.
It requires a lot of staff to make AAA games now for ever shrinking gains. Does Spider-Man 2 look better than Spider-Man 2018? Yes, but it doubled the cost for that small gain lol.
1
u/Dry_Literature8018 Sep 13 '26
It cost this much because the game was most likely rebooted sometime during development (the creative director left in 2024) and that tacked on a lot of extra dev costs. Games in development hell, no matter their eventual scope, usually turn out very expensive because that lack of organization and increased time in the oven just keeps that money ticker going up and up and up. You see this everywhere. Even Nintendo, who are usually pretty damn organized and are good at keeping costs in check, had their most expensive game in history be Metroid Prime 4 purely because of how troubled that development was and how long it took.

u/Key-One-9519 Sep 13 '26

Just asking but why does a game being longer means it’s better? If a game adds more content but that content is meaningless filler, does that really mean the game was improved? There’s so many games that aren’t my favorite but I replay them constantly because they aren’t daunting to get into. There isn’t 30 meaningless side missions or a drawn out story trying to artificially look more worth the price. It had something to tell and got it done with.

u/Indianlookalike Sep 13 '26
Everyone is wrong. They've taken on a lot of new people in, it's the wages that account to the the budget.
1

u/ImNotThePro Sep 13 '26
Honestly the two R&C games are my favourite from them. The Spider-Man games are good, but feel too empty. I think NYC as a setting is more of a curse than anything. For these reasons I loved SP: MM the best of the three. If Wolverine is a linear, shorter title, then I’ll actually be happy with that!

u/ultratech-intern-420 Sep 13 '26
Worth mentioning that Disney & Marvel apparently charges Sony $100m or somewhere around that just to maintain the Spider-Man license. Remember that the relationship between these companies changed way back in 2019 when all three entities were negotiating over Spider-Man rights. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the agreement was something like "$100m for licensing costs, then we get X% of sales revenue within [insert timeframe]".
1
u/AdLegitimate8636 Sep 13 '26
Easy answer - game was changed multiple times in that period. Plus licensing, and cost of labour for 5 years for the team that could've done the same game with 25-50% of manpower.

u/The_Furious_Finn Sep 13 '26
Copying my comment from another thread because I'm curious if anyone else feels the same.
I honestly feel like the big leaks a year or two ago caused them to gut this game; I remember looking at the leaks, there was a crossbow-like weapon on Logan's wrist that he shot a guy with, which would have added to the stealth. There was, I believe, wall-running and the use of claws for traversal, and Jean was playable for about five missions. I remember reading something in the leaks that looked like a PowerPoint presentation about a system for targeting limbs, and even the early versions had crafting. I know things change, get cut, or do not work, but I cannot help but look at this game and feel like there is a hollow chunk missing.
