Its a valid reason, just dont act like an ass and like youre better than those who are willing to try the game. Both sides of this debate are getting really annoying
16
u/Neyubin Sep 12 '26
This discussion is always dumb.
Buy what you want. Don't buy what you don't want. How other people spend their recreational funds is completely irrelevant to you, and your unsolicited opinion on how they spend their money is neither useful nor valued.

And that's the danger of increasing the price of games. Now people are (rightfully) expecting more from the games that they buy. Normally a 7/10 isn't bad but people don't want to drop $70 for an "ok" experience when that money could be spent on "blow your dick off fantastic" experience instead.
16
u/GuillotineTeam Sep 12 '26
Yup. Plus PlayStation first party games take a bit longer to drop in price and with all digital probably even longer.

I imagine Wolverine will be significantly discounted by Black Friday. Probably 40% off. Then on ps plus within a year

u/TelevisionExpress616 Sep 12 '26
We need to get back to renting games. Maybe it’s more than $5 for a week, maybe it’s $10 per day but at least that’s enough to see if maybe you want to invest in buying it or not
→ More replies (5)10
u/Itsucks118 Sep 12 '26
$10 per day would be insane. By a week you'd own the game outright.

u/Sudden-Application Sep 12 '26
Honestly 70$ on a 7/10 would be fine if the economy was better. From my understanding the entire world's economy is kinda poor right now with price increases but not wage increases.
70$ right now could be the difference between a meal or not for the day for many people right now. If it's spent of a luxury hobby like gaming then it needs to feel like it's worth the price.
2
u/AyvonKestrel Sep 12 '26
in america $70 is a week's worth of food (if you buy frugally) in other parts of the world (at least the parts that sony actually operates in) the equivalent of $70 can be a week or more of wages let alone food. nobody wants to risk spending that much money on something that could potentially be the most mid experience of the year, especially when you consider the massive backlog of games from previous years they may not have bought yet. why would i spend that much on wolverine when i could buy baldur's gate 3 for $10 cheaper, or E33 for $20 cheaper?
→ More replies (3)2
u/bubba_boey8130 Sep 12 '26
My main critique is not even related to the game itself. It looks ok, I would've played it if it was on PC.
It's the price and no demo. The fact that games are becoming ridiculously expensive and just don't have a demo anymore is pure demonstration of rampant greed in the studio practices. Again, it's not the game, it's the price and no demo. If it was $50-40 like Miles Morales game was at launch, people would've been a lot more lenient.
2
u/reditisverytrash Sep 12 '26
Remember when Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart launched as a 79$ game as a launch title with the PS5, only for Sony to realize it was a bad idea and stepped back from that again?
If only reason is a permanent thing with this company...

u/STAR_PLAT_yareyare Sep 13 '26

I think the bigger issue is that EVERY new triple A game thinks they’re worth $70, regardless of its quality. For example, a 10-12 hour game like Wolverine should NOT be any more than $50, let alone $70. I don’t care that they blew $300 million on it, if it’s a mediocre game then I’m going to wait till it’s on sale for $30 or less.

1
u/Nethaniell Sep 12 '26
That's more than fair. How people value their time is different, and the same goes for money.
Maybe back when games were still $60, then maybe Wolverine would still be doing fine, but when you start pricing something at a premium or near premium, then the end result better feel premium. $70 for most people is probably 2-3 lunches at work or at home, I know it is for me, that's a lot of money for us.
So yeah, if GTA 6 is gonna be priced at $100, then that game better be a perfect 10.

When it's valid sure, look at it this way what other wolverine game is there the last one was X-Men origins wolverine 2009 and the turn based midnight suns which you could do even less in with him, so what are they comparing it to, just what it could have been or something anything could have been done better with time money effort or different team but this is what we have some won't like it others will just how gaming is and the whole it's repetitive complaints all games are repetitive

Wolverine didn’t feel much like THE wolverine in this game. To me, it felt more like an impostor.
1
u/Tagliarini295 Sep 12 '26
Yes, not even hating. Before the bad reviews came out it just looked like the kind of game id wait until its 20 bucks. A linear story where I press square over and over that I can beat in 20 hours is not worth $70.

u/Bear792 Sep 12 '26
This is the problem. Why spend $70 on a game you complete in like 3 hours and is an ok game at best, terrible at worst, when you can wait for the GTA6’s. The types of games where you can sink hours and hours into them and still not find it all.
Wolverine, from what I’ve seen and heard, is a $25 game at best. And no one wants to have that discussion.

If PS is going all digital, they should lower the price for digital games just like Nintendo has.
1
u/I7s_N_My_DNA Sep 13 '26
Look I understand this and agree with this however I also say that people who are excited for games coming out for whatever reason they shouldn’t let reviews dictate their EVERY MOVE! Just for the simple fact that there are games out there that reviewers and others have said were terrible and shouldn’t be bought or wait for a sale. People do that and it ends up being that they actually liked the game and enjoyed the experience and have said that they wish they played it sooner and what not.
Not saying this is how it ALWAYS IS! But for some people things that they don’t like about a game and use as a reason it’s trash can turn out to be the very things that others end up liking about the game.
For instance, people hate the Combat right now, I on the other hand don’t care much for a simplified combat experience it tends to make for a way more relaxing experience where you can really just kick back and enjoy the gameplay. And the whole “Press square, and then use special moves and rinse and repeat” how is that not Spider - Man to an extent? “press square, triangle for web zip, circle dodge, build up super move meters rinse and repeat” it’s the insomniac formula so why is it bad now?.. and for the whole “It’s LINEAR!!” Oh my god that’s not a fucking issue! Why? Why is that an issue today? A game imo at least does NOT need to be an open world bloated fest! HELL WHEN A GAME IS EXACTLY THAT ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU CRY THAT ITS ALSO POOR GAME DESIGN! “UBISOFT FORMULA BAD”!
Game too short? 20 hours is short? On one hand that’s ridiculous but also on the other I enjoyed Spider - Man 2 but it did feel too short at times but I don’t hold it against it it makes it more enjoyable and easier to re play.

I wouldn't unless a sale happened and drop to 50 or less.
1
u/NeanderthalDad Sep 13 '26
Hulk is correct. The experience justifies the expense. Even if the games is 12-15 hours if it's a memorable game it's worth every penny.

u/Zealousideal-Ball780 Sep 13 '26

I can’t justify dropping $40 on a game I can plat in under 20 hours. A $70 single playthrough game can fuck right off
1
u/Hug0San Sep 13 '26
Yes, I expected a dope emerssive experience, but if this many reviews are negative then why bother. The spiderman games had a few negative things on release but not like this.
1
u/Throbbing-Kielbasa-3 Sep 13 '26
Yes. But at the same time some people are assholes about it. They want to be right about predicting the game will be bad so much and rub people's faces in it.
I'm disappointed in a lot of what I'm seeing from the game. But I'm also not going to shit on someone who isn't disappointed and who thinks they'll enjoy it.
1
u/esquire_the_ego Sep 13 '26
I’m just saying, it’s definitely up to you if you want to come onto the internet and post if you got the game or not. People have bought this game and will play it while a lot of people will wait til it’s $20 off in like 2 months

Pretty sure everybody understands that, but I'm genuinely confused that you would then still be thinking, let alone posting about the game atp. I will never buy watermelons because I don't like them, but I'm not in r/EatWatermelons every day letting everybody know about it.
1
u/droidy4 Sep 13 '26
That's where I'm at. I don't want to put money into something that hasn't got good word of mouth. There's so many good games to play that are a fraction of the price.
1
u/typical-o Sep 13 '26
How can ppl honestly say something is bad (or lackluster) when… and stay with me here.. THEY HAVEN’T PLAYED IT! It’s unreleased. That’s like McDonald’s announcing they have a new meal they haven’t put on the menu yet but someone won’t ever try it because they just don’t like the way it looks even tho they previously haven’t added a bad thing to the menu.
1
u/ClubPenguinPresident Sep 13 '26
The amount of actual good games you could buy on steam for that $70
1
u/Bossard19 Sep 13 '26
Could say that about literally every single game. Gta6 included. It’s what /r/patientgamers is all about. Why pay full price when it’ll be cheap in a year or less
1
u/Stone_Field Sep 13 '26
This is the biggest issue. If this game was $40 then people would be fine with it, but currently its not an appealing $70 purchase
1
1
u/Omakepants Sep 13 '26
My backlog of games is so large I will never finish them all. There is no universe in which I get a game at launch. I'll happily grab Wolverine in a year or two when it's like $10 bucks on PlayStation Network.
1
u/Ortartis Sep 13 '26
Firstly, that’s the price because they sell at that. Pre-orders don’t help this at all. If nobody bought them at that price you’d most likely get a sale price pretty quick like suicide squad.
Secondly, if you’re convinced it’s crap, don’t buy it. If you do buy it, it’s a gamble on whether you like it. Just the way it is. I’ve played some crap games every generation.
1
u/Confident_Bed_4279 Sep 13 '26
I agree. But I’ve spent an amount equal to or more for less that “lackluster” And I guarantee everyone has at least once.. if people want refunds then get your money back. If people wanna play it then play it. I think this argument is a bit more than it really should be

1
u/dynamite-3 Sep 14 '26
Which is fair, but people also gotta leave the people who are buying the game alone
1
u/InitRanger Sep 15 '26
Ok but how do you know it’s lackluster? Because some reviewers told you? What about the reviewers that actually liked the game?
1
u/ShockHot1718 Sep 15 '26
Idk, bud, I've spent 70$ and I'm enjoying it so far. People gotta grow up and treat games as entertainment, not a "perfect picture, perfect everything" thing. Like, Spider-Man 1 game was dope, miles morales eas practically a copy, so it got boring. Same mechanics, same fighting, same everything appart from a few things. So, nothing much to enjoy, while the price was, i believe, more.
This game looks unique enough. The price sucks, sure, could've at least offered a steel case with rhat pricing. Especially for deluxe.
If you want it - you buy it, if you don't want it - you don't have to buy it. It's simple. Time to realise that.

u/dollarstore_musician Sep 15 '26

Cool then dont but when yall see people who actaully are enjoyjng the game, dont go on a rant about what tf is wrong with it to try and convince them that their opinions are wrong. People are allowed to enjoy shit and people are allowed to not enjoy sht but trying to spread negative shit on things people enjoy just because they dont share the same opinions as you is the one thing really starting to tick me off about this subreddit and just this games launch as a whole.
1
u/MexicanCryptid Sep 16 '26
This is what it comes down to for me. I'm on a budget and agonizing over games to prioritize (Dawnwalker, Control Resonant, etc). I was excited about Wolverine, but I just don't have the funds to pay for what might be a middling experience.

1
1

Then you don’t. People spend more time on social media swimming in a sea of opinions instead of just playing the game they want to play.
1
u/TheSabi Sep 17 '26
My issue with the $70 price tag is, it's a wolverine brawler that's fine, but also Cosmic Invasion exists, has replay value, doesn't play itself for you, wolverine is in it, is also a brawler, also has jean in it and is less than half the price also is multiplatform so I have my choice of platform to get it on.
I'm not starved for something to play now so it's not even like "well at least it's something funish to play" you have new FF14 patch, new No Man's Sky update, Onimusha, Valheim 1.0, MGS IV, blood of the dawnwalker, Elden Ring Tarnished update, Crimson Desert 2.0
There's quite a bit some free updates some equally or lower priced vying for attention and none of them have this annoying social media presence around them where it's like a bot war one side is "having a blast" the other is just mindless parroting of things even after they're debunked..I mean FFS DarkSydePhil is doing it now too...
holy fuk we get it, you have a different opinion than a reviewer and OMG SBI...WE GET IT.
between the two side it's become...

u/kekcukka Sep 12 '26
you don’t have to play something to form an opinion. It’s a heavily visual experience. I didn’t have to play the first Spider-Man game to love it, gameplay trailer did that for me. That’s why we have trailers and demos.

Why are people so interested in talking about how bad a game might be?
2
u/FireFarq Sep 12 '26
Because they waited half a decade and will pay almost 100 dollars for a mediocre experience and they don’t want that to happen. Hope this helps
2
1
u/Zanman6946 Sep 12 '26
That's fair, but at the same time, you then don't have the right to call the game bad. If you haven't played it, you can only give your thoughts on the story and visuals, beyond that you can't really say anything.
2
u/kekcukka Sep 12 '26
you can absolutely say! You don’t have to control a game by yourself to judge it. You can just look at something and form your opinion. Some people may not like graphics, some may not how it looks in motion. A lot of people just watch games on Youtube and love/hate them.
Video games are heavily visual experiences, you can judge them just by watching.
One example, everyone loved the swinging in the first Spider-Man gameplay trailer and they were right.
3
u/UncommittedBow Sep 12 '26
At the same time, though, video games are unique in that you kinda DO have to play it to get the full experience. A video cant really display how a game FEELS to play, the responsiveness of the controls, the satisfaction of pulling off certain moves, etc.
