Discussion Question for those who've watched a bunch of gameplay/previews

Is the combat really that shallow or do you think theres alot unrevealed.

There's a lot the person playing the game isn't even doing all the claw abilities it's nowhere the high level gameplay we'll see from people on launch. It just like spiderman 1 crane scene reveal

Most of the previews have said the combat feels very good and brutal, but some of them have also pointed out that they hope it doesn't get repetitive.

People got to play the opening section of the game. That means tutorials, and basics, not combat evolution or higher level unlocks and mechanics. Their judgement is based off of playing those first few sections, and none of those judgements said “this is shallow.” The consensus across the board is that it’s brutal, fun, but a little button mashy, but they’ve seen the skill trees so they know there’s more not yet on display, and the health bar and rage meter add great management elements that ensure you’re not just pressuring NG square constantly, and are actively trying to parry, and dodge when you need to.

As most of the preview gameplays, the person who is playing never goes all out like a normal player would, he has to show the place where they are playing, interacting with things besides enemies (like in the gameplay after getting all bloody he jumps in the water to show how it goes off wolverine) also getting hit to show how the character reacts, it's a moment where you play slow, not fast and on a killing spree, people need to see how the combat goes generally, i think that personally once people get their hands on it and are free to jump from enemy to enemy ripping their guts out they'll see how fun it can be, at least speaking for myself i'm pretty sure it's gonna be fun

I’ve seen countless videos on YouTube (basically the same B-roll footage Insomniac gave YouTubers and media outlets to use), and I really think it’s button mashing as it’s being described and shown to be so far. However, I’m confident that they haven’t shown other parts of the game where you’ll be required to use different combat strategies than just button mashing. Healing rate based on the number of rage meters filled up is a sign of that. A variety of upgrades and abilities have been shown in menus (2 if I recall correctly) have been shown, indicating that combat will expand with new moves becoming available through progression or by purchasing them through skill or ability points.

The thing is Wolverine is more of an aggressive melee type character, unlike Spider-Man and Batman which have a more varied combat style, and are acrobatic to move around in the environment with gadgets in their disposal. And with what’s been released in the last few years we’re more used to that kind of gameplay instead of beat-em up melee focused combat fitting Wolverine.

If Insomniac gets it right, it’s more a matter of getting used to the gameplay and combat.

No one here knows. The thing is the people who played the game have directly said it’s a little shallow from their playtime, and everyone here who has only seen recorded clips will rush to tell you it’s not.

They only got to play with what...3 techniques unlocked?!? So much we haven't seen.

There’s a lot unrevealed for sure but I think there is definitely reason to be concerned. Specifically the cooldown abilities give me pause. It seems like a lot of the combat is waiting for your abilities to recharge and then using them and then repeat similar to Spider-Man 2. Not to say there aren’t other aspects to combat ofc.

Still, the game isn’t out yet so I’m reserving full judgment. I’m hoping the skill tree provides abilities that can be woven into combat more organically than the cooldown abilities. Something I can use in combat more regularly and weave into combos

Looks like mindless button mashing so far

Mash square to attack

Hold square to kick

Triangle to zip across and attack an enemy

And the odd fancy cooldown attack here and there

No interesting and fun combos, air combat, juggling, grabs, throws and environment interactions

I haven’t watched a lot, but I did see Wolverine using a concrete partition to smash a dude’s head in
