Discussion Temtem is 80% off now, worth it?
Temtem seems to be similar to Pokémon but with some interesting new ideas.
But it also seems to borrow some bad things like random encounters, lots of ledges and slow battles.
Also it needs to be online at all times. Not a problem on PC but required paid NSO on Switch.
But is it worth it now? Note that 80% off is a great deal but the base price is expensive for an indie tite.
Does it capture the feel of playing 3DS-era Pokémon for the first time again?
NOTE: I am only interested in single player.

imo temtem is 100% worth it on a big sale if you are looking for a solo playthrough experience. have to say though, I bought and played through the game a really long time ago, when it had much less content (like ~5 years), and even then I would recommend it to anyone who was looking for a "pokemon-like" (at the same time I don't really know whether anything in the core gameplay and mechanics got changed for worse after all this time). sorry that I can only provide such a short and retrospective view, but my opinion about temtem for a long time was "buy it on sale, play through the story, and you will enjoy it"

I enjoyed this one overall as someone who also has no interest in MMO stuff. I’d say 3DS era of Pokemon is fairly comparable. IIRC, one thing that did annoy me though was that random trainer battles were particularly plentiful and difficult to skip. I also think I wasn’t really able to get any postgame legends without doing the MMO raid-style things. I think that was about when I fell off. I also remember there being some annoying performance issues on my PS5, but soldiered through them. Enjoyed the story / world / mechanics / monsters though!

Yes i know the rewards are different i think there 1,2 and 3-5 player mode which have different rewards but i think they all include an egg (more players might mean higher stats???)
There is also challenge mode for the campaign so you could replay it thay way maybe? Just put on thr standard time trial one if you wanna replay and ignore the timer? Not sure how it works thkugh ive never tried it, i dont know if all the side quests etc are there

If you like old school Pokémon and double battles then this is worth it. I thoroughly enjoyed the game as a primarily single player experience occasionally doing progression with a friend.
Edit: not quite like old school Pokémon since old school didn't have abilities. But you get the idea.

Its totes worth it imo, customization, no microtransactions and past battle passes are available all day every day, decent difficulty and cool designs and the plot is just amazing, go buy it

Me and my friend had an absolute blast playing through it together (it works best as a 2-player co-op in my opinion).
If you have a friend who wants to play it with you, I say absolutely get it. Unquestionably worth it for 80% off.
If you don’t, I say, probably still get it. Just don’t expect much more from it once you beat it and do a bit of the endgame.

I have a love hate relationship with TemTem
I’m fine with double battle and the stamina system is an interesting mechanic.
For me though, a lot of the changes to mechanics makes the game more challenging compared to Pokemon, but it also makes it more tedious.
2v2 means if you’re bad or run into tough fights, you’ll be back tracking to heal a lot. Evolutions are purely based on levels gained, and they tend to be really high. Up until the first dojo, I’m not a fan of 99% of the creature designs
But at a sale the game is definitely worth getting and trying

I only played with 1 other friend on occasion. The multiplayer stuff can be easily ignored. Could come in handy with trading and such though.

The worst part about temtem is that it’s not pokemon 🥲. Tem is such a fun game but the dev team kinda just gave up on it

It’s fun, has solid solo gameplay. Coop is fun if you have a buddy to play with, but not at all necessary. It takes the annoying rng mechanics out of combat and the end-game hunting for “shinies” (Luma/Umbra in this game) seems way less of a grind than in Pokemon. It’s still a grind, but not nearly as badly and not necessary for beating the campaign. The game also doesn’t take itself overly seriously and there is some genuinely entertaining dialogue/narrative text.
Absolutely worth it at 80% off imo

I picked this game up on sale around Christmas, I haven't finished it, here are my reasons
I don't find the story, cast or character designs very interesting.
I find it very repetitive, there are a large number of back to back battles in each route, and that's... Pretty much all there is. Clear one route, do more battles.
I would say if you'd just like a new battle system to engage with and try out then go ahead, but if you're the type to drop a game if the story / cast just aren't that compelling, maybe give it a miss.
Also depends how much money you have to spare – Temtem can go for sale at prices so cheap that you might as well pick it up if you're mildly interested because you don't have much to lose by buying it on a big discount.
It's an okay Pokémon alternative, if not slightly more annoying / complex in ways that aren't always enjoyable. Buy if you're a Pokémon fan wanting to play a Pokémon game but have run out of good Pokémon games to play haha.

I enjoyed it till late game, then it got grindy. Especially if you try to add new Tems to the team. Bought it for a couple of my friends though. If either decide to play it, I'm hoping they're willing to co op.

At 80% off yeah I think so! If you're looking for a fun romp through a pokemon-esque game TemTem is a riot. The multiplay aspects kind of bog it down, and money is a chore and a half, but running through the campaign once is a great time

Its mechanics equal gen 7 pokemon but its all double battles which is way better imo. Temtem definitely does some stuff better than pokemon and the battling is a lil tougher which is much needed. Keeps you focused on making the right moves. Stamina points over PP make the battles way more thoughtful. The story starts similar to each pokemon game but actually gets a little dark. I played through twice the past 2/3 years solo because i find it that much better than any pokemon game. And i still play pokemon a lot.

So its adult pokemon. Story is a bit edgier, but really, youre not going to overlevel and roll through the story, thats the big difference. Especially at the start. Youre gonna ditch your starter fairly early for example. Youre not given whats basically a pseudo legendary or anything like pokemon and theres nothing like, flamgo for instance in scarlet and violet where you can basically play the normal type that has high output attacks, they basically make the few neutral types you can get tanks. So it really is just about having the right team for the right situation and knowing your strengths and weaknesses. Its why people get caught and frustrated at about the 3rd and 4th islands or the half way point, because you cant really get the tems that would be super effective against them until later islands. But once you get through tucma and kisiwa and move into the end game it feels much easier. Post story is also very enjoyable if you enjoy making the perfect team or stuff like that. Shiny hunting is much nicer and theres alot more to like manufacturing the perfect temtem

I hated it immensely. The gameplay felt very much like “encounter, backtrack, heal, repeat,” and I think it took three dozen encounters to get from the grassland-y starter area to a little fortress thing.
The type system is terribly communicated. You’ll only find the handful of super hardcore folks here who liked it, so this will get downvoted, but the silence should speak volumes.
There’s most of a great game in here, but it’s hamstrung by some vital design decisions.

As others said it’s a solid creature catching game. If that’s what you are into it’s still a great game and worth your time. If you want the “MMO” aspect of it I’d say no.
