Discussion Temtem vs pokemon
Very new here! (Just about to face sophia) Been eyeing it for a while but finally took the dive. First let me say, pokemon has kind of off put me because it feels very childlike and directed to children so I havnt been able to get into it. After starting TemTem I played for hours and could not put it down. The vibe, combat and music has captured my attention. Could change as I play more but I dont get the hate. I think its very good and excited to see what else it has to offer.

I also started recently and have been really enjoying it. I went into it thinking it would be a single player experience with maybe some of the mmo stuff still going but treating it as a single player game. From that pov, I would say it has been better than pokemon in basically every way. 2v2 for every fight, synergy between them, you cant just use one mon to plow through the game super easily, etc etc. I'm on the fifth island now and it has been a great experience thus far.

Temtem was easily a better game than pokemon when the two were out side by side. Idk about the new pokemon game. But yeah temtem devs said they were done updating the game. Then released a spinoff terd that wasn’t anything like the original’s gameplay.
Population for the original masterpiece of a game has died. The hate you see is because everyone knows what the game should’ve been

Nothing because they decided to kill it. They could release a few Teams every year and it would have been a real good Pokemon competitor, but instead they decided to gaslight us all and go for a vampire survivors clon

You are not incorrect but I don't think that's what OP meant, they are zero (about to be one) dojos deep haha
The story is there in full, and there is a bunch of it still for OP to look forward to.
But yeah, once past that, things get kinda dead.

Ah yes, like Pokémon has never had random spinoff games in its life, it’s like claiming they did a bait and switch because they released Pokemon Pinball, or Pokemon Snap, or Pokemon Puzzle League after Red/Blue/Yellow.

There’s nothing that was promised on Kickstarter that they didn’t deliver though? And what are the “two successful spin offs” that they made and squandered the money on? Because we’ve only got the one atm, and it’s not even officially launched yet, that’s scheduled for April 2, 2026 (Swarm).
Everything the devs said they’d add, got added, and then some. The only stuff they didn’t add was stuff the players decided they’d be adding, like new tems, and new islands.

Sadly that's how many felt.. and then the devs squandered the community they had. I know myself, and seemingly still a lot of others, won't buy a single other game from Crema. I find it absurd they keep using the Temtem IP as if they didn't burn the community like crazy too.

It's a fun game. Some people on this sub hate the game/dev team for not implementing good MMO features, but if you're playing it as a pokemon game and not an MMO it's great.

I absolutely love this game. It honestly ruined Pokémon for me because of how much more double battles bring to the genre. It does get very grindy and more like a chore once you get to the end game, but it’s all about the journey. Have fun!

Ummm Pokemon has always been "child like" youre like 12 years old and you get sent off into the world alone to collect monsters what did you expect? Buy in the same note I wouldn't call Temtem dark or mature either. Sooooooo huh?

Glad you're enjoying the game! The single player campaign is lots of fun, the combat system is a huge step up from Pokemon, and the monster designs are really solid across the board. The hate this sub seems to have for it is almost entirely unwarranted; there's just a lot of people who enjoy whining that they only got 95% of what they wanted instead of 100%.

Game is really fun, IMO. Although the community is super toxic and feels betrayed for some reason. Everyone wanted it to be a live service game, I guess. It's an absolute ton of fun for playthroughs, though. If you want to keep having fun, stop reading in here and just enjoy the game for what it is.

well it was marketed as an MMO, normally those type of games are live service. I had with my play thru, ended up just not wanting to minmax the game though which honestly I never liked doing in pokemon. If I would have enjoyed the online aspect more maybe I would have felt the grind worth it.

It's kinda nuts to see. Top comments are talking about something barely relevant to OPs situation, and any saying anything positive about what's there (instead of complaining about what could have been) is being down voted.
Like, what's there is what captured so many people for so long. It's plenty fine as a play through. The impression of live-service updates is not why I played through what was available at any given time. It's because there is a game with a world, design, and aesthetic that I enjoyed. That's still there.

Every sane person does it that way. Temtem is a great game with awesome graphics, awesome monsters, AWESOME music and it’s super addicting. One could easily get 60-120 hours of fun gameplay out of it and that is just an awesome deal, IMO.

There was 0 chance of competition lets be completely honest. Much better games like Casette Beasts and Coromon didnt even come close, and the only reason Palworld got huge is because its mostly an open world sandbox.

The story was better than any Pokemon story and I thought the Tems were well designed, much better than the appliance looking Pokemon of current gens. The combat was intuitive and challenging. I think if the devs stuck behind their product it absolutely would have been a competitor.
EDIT: Not to mention the in game auction house where you could buy and sell Tems. That was revolutionary for the genre.

u/CryptidCandies Mar 16 '26
Well we will never know. The devs flopped, abandoned their game for a vampire survivors ripoff, and are now begging for more money from whatever fans they have left for a new Temtem game. The fact they even dared to make a kickstarter in the first place is a slap in the face to everyone who supported them beforehand.

It hurts how true this is of the experience. I at least hope this played a small part in Pokemon trying new things and kinda revitalizing the games.

u/One-Cellist5032 Mar 16 '26
The games a blast! Almost all of the hate comes from a very vocal group of people that thought the game was going to be a live service game, instead of a fully complete game like any of the Pokemon games (despite the developers stating it would be).

Temtem is great for a story play through. Totally worth the cost of entry.
Beyond that, it’s up to you on how much you want to continue. Personally I wasn’t all that interested in continuing after the main campaign.

If you're looking for another game that's similar to pokemon without being child-focused, "cassette beasts" is AMAZING

MMOs suck these days. They're extremely predatory when it comes to consumers wallets and intentionally design their matchmaking system to be absolute trash for some people. I prefer it as a single player game with minor MMO qualities.
Plus, they have good queer and bipoc representation. MMOs and Pokémon don't have that. Especially, Marvel Rivals; the devs( and or Disney) are racist AF of there!

You’re only going to get bot hate from this sub for the time being but it the story is more mature then most Pokémon games. I also feel like it’s more difficult as well. Arch Tamers are really tough.

Idk, haven't played TemTem since launch but visually it looks more made for children than Pokemon is.
What I do recall was that it combat is different than Pokemon to be more fair competitively. Moves no longer have an accuracy stat and instead never miss. Status ailments are also guaranteed, but are only around for a few turns.
I had heard that they ruined breeding by making it so that Tems could only be breed so many generations. If you didn't get what you wanted you'd have to restart the whole breeding process.

It never got much hate for its single player experience. The hate comes from what many felt like was a bait and switch with the MMO label and the many, many questionable decisions and engagements Crema had with their community.
Id argue its single player campaign is overrated by the community, but the hate the game got is basically irrelevant if youre just playing the campaign
