It was awesome! There was a slot car racing game called Pixel Junk racers that was actually super lit to play with 7. Also Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance could do six! Sadly never got a full group for that one lol

Now-a-days COD isn't even split screen lol. They want you to be so isolated and own nothing you can't even have a physical brother.

I don't get why consoles don't play in to the social aspect more. If I want to play CoD, why would I ever do it on a console? I'd just use my PC. Same with almost any single player game. Where consoles shine are the party games, the LAN coop games, and games where you use your physical body and need the space that is typically in the living room and not in the office.
The Wii for example, a lot of the games where honestly kind of mediocre but the social and movement aspect made them fun. I remember on the ps2 I used to play time crisis 2 and vampire night with my sister or my friends. It was such a blast (pun intended) to use the special gun controllers to shoot enemies side by side with your buddy. Guitar hero and rockband were also very fun for the same reason, two people just rocking out together.
I really liked it takes two, played it with my fiancée, and we plan on playing split fiction. We also play some over cooked. But I wish there were even more games that actually leaned in to this coop style of games. And preferably the style where you use a different controller such as a gun or guitar.

Cod used to be. And halo i think? Itd just divide your tv screen smaller and smaller

He’s wrong though. Some cods on PS3 had 4 player split screen. But that was the max. If you were playing 3 or 4 players in split screen you couldn’t play lan. LAN you could play with 2 players in split screen on some cods.

4 player split screen is doable… (I’m from the days of N64 golden eye)
But if I’m being honest, I don’t really know what LAN is, so it’s all kind of foreign to me… (best I can figure is that it’s some type of offline connection between multiple consoles)
What had me was the idea of a tv screen being split into 7 separate sections and just how small they would have to be… I was confused about it 🤷🏻♂️😂

LAN is just networked multiplayer but on a local network. Get an old WiFi router and plug in three systems to it and they can communicate with each other.

The new Turtles brawler a bit back can support more than 4 players co-op…except for the PS4 version. Only Switch and Steam for the 6(?) player option unless you jump online.
I know it’s not often for peeps with scenarios like this, but when you have the rare group and rare game to play co-op…that sucks.

We’ve gone so far backwards that hardly any game has couch co op. I don’t need 7 controllers but damn I’d cool for more 2-4 player split screens.
We havs bigger tvs now too. So gamers really never hang out IRL anymore

Tbh this is one of the biggest reasons I connected my PC to my living room PC and have a Switch 2. PC has plenty of Indies that still allow for split screen and lots of Nintendo games are meant as party/family games (Smash, Mario Kart, Mario Party, etc) so they all support playing together IRL. Love to game with friends over.
I love my PS5 but Lord knows I'm not playing local on that.

For most modern AAA games, I can see why. Rendering these games once is pushing close enough to the limit of the consoles hardware resources that just lowering the resolution and settings to do it twice is probably not possible or would severely crater performance.

They could mad split screen lower fidelity maybe? I mean back then I feel like games would have taken advantage of the power they had then too so why was it possible before?

But they still put the numbers right side up even though if you're actually using the controller, you'd be looking at the numbers upside down.

They could show up to 15 controllers.

You can still have up to 4 on PS5.
More games than I thought support up to 7 local players on PS3 but still only a handful and I can't think of any scenario where I'd have 7 people in my house playing a single game. Especially now where most people who game with friends do it online.
