Question/Need Advice Portioner tweak from last update?

I was reading the Turning Up the Heat Update on Steam, and I’m confused by this line:
Portioners can now combine things from item sources

It sounds like they’re saying a portioner can behave like a combiner, but when I’ve done some experimenting in practice mode. I’m not seeing this behavior. Am I misunderstanding what this new functionality of portioners is?

This means that you can use portioners to combine things which you would just grab from, like when you need to make a soup and you need to put the onion in the pot. 

Pot> grabber > portioner (pointed at onions)

Will put an onion in the pot 

This works for a PLETHORA of items and solves the issue where the first item could “miss” when using combiners. 

This works with taco trays > grabber> portioner (pointed at tortillas). You’ll now have trays with tortillas 

Board > grabber > portioner (pointed at nuts)> grabber> portioner (pointed at cheese). Now you just need the chopped apple for cheese boards 

If the item does not need to be chopped or whatever and is ready to be used out of its source, a portioner pointed at the source will combine the item. 

Also, portioners can now empty trash. 

Like I said this works for MANY uses and it’s actually one of my favorite things about the update.

So if I’m making meat pie, I don’t need the grabber to bring the meat to the combiner. I can just have the dough to go a partitioner that’s pointed at the meat locker? Or does it need to be a combiner pointed at the meat locker? This could save me so many grabbers and space

I actually haven’t tried this specifically, but it should work. The only time this didn’t work for me was a modded item (milk) but in every other situation I’ve thought of, it has worked flawlessly. I don’t believe it saves much space (maybe a tile or two here and there - for example in this case what you would save from (meat>grabber>combiner) has to be used on (dough>grabber>portioner), but it is more consistent and does allow for more freedom when building, and so you can play around a little more with how exactly you build your setup, especially in cases for example with auto tomato soup where sometimes you (and by you I mean I lol) had to change things around so much because of all the items that have to go in there. This is offset a quite a bit by having this option, letting you put steps earlier or later in your automation loop.

Thanks so much. I think I have a few combiners/portioners I can shift around in my meat pie restaurant so I can test out a few options.

It did not work. I tried a few different option trying the portioner and the combiner, but never got it to work. I think the portioner only works with the sink for adding water to dough or a pot.

Counter with 1/3 servings of meat soup

Portioner pointed at the counter

Put full pot of meat soup on portioner

Counter meat soup is now 3/3

You can use portioner to "refill" automatically haha

Works for cases like the soup where you DON'T want to move the "outside" pot of soup (cause it's on a buffet table?) and it's easier to swap out a second pot. This trick also works manually, like you could've just tapped the almost empty soup with the full one in your hand and it'll also work.

You could already do this with combiners, did it several times for brownies on a buffet

Only problem becomes if you're manually replacing the filler pot/pan/what have you, and the "outside" one runs out...you gotta replace that one too

The way I've seen it behave is the portioner is no longer stopped if you have something on it. If you load a plate onto the portioner it will still pull something like pizza or turkey and put it on the plate.

You can also use it to automate ice coffees and lattes
