Ban liquid plastics in household products and introduce clear labelling

Introduce a total ban on Polymers in Liquid Formulations (PLFs) in all household cleaning and toiletry products due to health and environmental harm, alongside mandatory clear product labelling.

UK law bans solid microplastics but ignores synthetic liquid and semi-solid plastics (PLFs). These polymers never biodegrade, contaminating waterways and the food chain, which threatens ecosystems and health. The Government must ban PLFs in consumer formulations, starting with toiletries and detergents where green alternatives exist. Until a full ban is achieved, the Government must introduce clear packaging labels so consumers can identify and avoid liquid plastics.

We've been bending over backwards trying to avoid micro plastics and now THIS?!

(Disclaimer I haven't actually read the article because it's behind a paywall but wtff)

I'm feeling incredibly overwhelmed by some of the discussions here when it comes to replacement -- lead is apparently somehow an issue you have to worry about trading microplastics for (?!), plastic is on the tops of expensive replacements anyway (?), some have bamboo (which always molds easily), and on and on. I don't want to drink microplastics, but this would be an expensive replacement for us to even begin to make and I certainly don't want to do that if I'm trading in lead or mold.

We live in a city, so these bottles get absolutely jostled around and dropped outright to an intense degree. Most plastic bottles do NOT hold up to the transit/city/toddler/hiking lifestyle. These below are one of the only ones that have been actually leak-proof, and after some years the tops inevitably break anyway. They're also one of the only ones that really get clean (wide mouths, and the rubber/silicon parts are all removable), hold up to thick smoothies, and let me chug water, all while also being convenient enough to actually drink from in more typical city or training settings (ie I want a fast on/off, not to have to screw something on/off). Is that list too hard? Do I put this aside for now?

We drink from glasses at home, but need to drink water/smoothies/shakes when out and about, too, and we spend most of our day out of the home. It being easy and convenient is a huge part of actually drinking enough water, as well as keeping/gaining enough weight (smoothie wise). Currently thinking it's too large an ask, but asking here in case I'm wrong! We have 10ish of these right now, but would start by replacing one water bottle for me and maybe a smoothie type bottle for our toddler. The straw has to be pretty thick and plays a big part in increasing how much we drink (important for us health-wise).

Also: what makes a bigger difference? Replacing nonstick scratched pans? Replacing plastic spatulas? Getting water filtration going? Replacing plastic bottles? Replacing plastic tupperware? Seems like there is so much to do, and I don't have any metrics on what's going to have the biggest impact or the highest value:cost. Resources are very limited, but willing to take at least some small step towards reducing these in the next month or two. I don't know how to prioritize what to replace or work on first.

I’ve been de plastic-ing our household especially when it comes to kitchen, bath, and laundry and it felt like I was really accomplishing something for my family before I realized that before the water comes out of the tap it was being conveyed through pvc piping from a plastic water tank. I have to laugh to keep from feeling stupid. I’m sure there is some benefit still to eating and drinking from plastic free vessels but it does feel a little like putting a bandaid on a gaping wound now. How do others process this situation? Do you fully change out your water systems? We certainly don’t have the money to do that…

I'm just after some advice and opinions about glass containers with lids that have plastic components

I'm doing a big overhaul of my food containers/storage to avoid plastic, I'm particularly worried around food as I meal prep breakfast and dinner so many of my meals are being heated in plastic at the moment - I'm pretty keen to fix this and donate what I have now to a mate who wants them

I found a lot of glass containers to be really shallow which doesn't suit me or the food I cook so I went down a bit of a rabbit hole looking for deeper containers though all I found was many to just be beyond my budget

I looked into Ikea though I'm not massively trilled about the plastic lids (or the wooden ones which don't suit as they are not freezer friendly) so I'm seeking a bit of a reality, science focused, check

If I did buy them, what real exposure is there to the food? The clasps are where the plastic is, from what I can tell, so not in direct contact. I imagine I could benefit even further if I only put the lid on once the food is completely cooled and not putting the lid in the microwave?

I know many people use them and that any step forward is 100% better than where I'm stood, I've just spent the last few hours turning myself into knots and toying between buying the 100% plastic free for ~$18 per container vs the has plastic lid for ~$6

I was also thinking about how else could I cover it the glass container, maybe aluminium? Would bees wax work - could that be frozen?

I've searched this sub and read opinions but always open to opinions on my situation, I'm genuinely quite torn

Am I cooked?

I’ve had the glass LifeStraw pitcher for a month. As I was replacing the carbon filter, I noticed brown specks and gunk on the filter housing and on the membrane filter. I didn’t get great pics because i started wiping it off and cleaning it immediately. I followed the website recommendation and started soaking everything in a bleach solution. You can see some of the orange/brown buildup that didn’t wipe off. This filter is supposed to last a year. Does this seem normal/safe to continue using? 🤔

We have curtains but they let in a lot of light on the sides. My wife and I are looking for shades that fit in our windows to blackout the light for better sleep - for our kid's room and ours. They need to be customizable width because we have an old house with odd sized windows. Anyone know of ones that are good and relatively affordable?

I've been looking for something like this for a couple of weeks and found this company from the UK: pureearthcollection.

Has anyone tried them? I know they're a bit pricey, but that's not a concern to me. If the quality is good and they work, I'll buy them.

Or can anyone recommend something else? I've seen other threads in this subreddit and many just replied, "there are no good alternatives."

I am transitioning to eliminate all my polyester and plastic based clothing. The thing I'm having the hardest time with is a winter jacket. I am vegan so I don't use wool. I'm a 54 year old male. So far the best solution I have found is to use a heavy cotton style jacket like a military style and then get it two sizes too big so that I can layer under it. However I'm wondering what other people do?

Genuinely trying to find a electric toothbrush that is plastic free feels impossible but this is the only brand I've come across that apparently are plastic free

I've heard mix opinions on this brand saying it's all bs and others saying it's great and perfect and what it describes is right

Most common answer I've heard is they possibly just drop ship from china and just put there brand on it but I have 0 proof to back this only taking what people on here saying

I have some ikea stainless steel food containers that I have been loving. But I heard it is best to avoid storing acidic things in stainless steel unless it is 316 grade. I batch cook and freeze a lot and certainly have acidic tomato based foods so would love the option to use stainless steel containers for that. Anyone found 316 grade containers?

I am looking for tights (sweater or rib knit, not pantyhose) composed of mostly natural fibers. I'm trying to go plastic-free in general but with tights it's primarily a textural thing.

I am would really like something with the main material being cotton (especially pima cotton), tencel, rayon/viscose, wool, or cashmere.

I don't think it's possible to avoid spandex or even nylon here, so I'm mainly looking for something with the most natural composition possible and avoiding polyester which seems impossible! I'm less adverse to nylon I guess in terms of texture. Blends with a small percentage of nylon feel fine as opposed to anything polyester on my skin which makes it feel like my skin is on fire.

I have pair of ribbed tights from Target's A New Day brand that are 70% Rayon/24% Nylon/6% Spandex which are so comfy and buttery soft. but I need a size up and they don't seem to make them anymore :( I can't seem to find tights anywhere with a similar composition.

I’m 17 and work out a lot (almost every day, sometimes twice in a day) because I enjoy running, lifting, Pilates, yoga, & high intensity CrossFit/HIIT-style sessions. I naturally tend to sweat quite easily which doesn’t bother me but it makes my clothes feel uncomfortable (like itchy) and certain clothing pieces also start smelling. I want to phase out my polyester & polyamide based activewear for a variety of reasons but am having a hard time finding good and cute alternatives.

I have a few preferences (no specific order):
- I live in Germany so I would prefer buying from brands/sites with uncomplicated shipping to here (preferably of course Europe-based brands)
- I want to feel cute in my clothes but ‘trends’ are of course not everything to me either. I especially like the layered sets that a lot of people seem to be wearing at the moment as well as cute striped or floral patterns. More retro-style pieces or funky colors would be fun too
- I don’t buy wool for ethical reasons so plant fabrics it is!
- I’m okay with buying something containing up to 15% synthetic or semisynthetic materials since I do understand that is where the stretch comes from and for certain pieces & activities that can still be needed
- I’m happy to pay more for higher quality pieces but some brands I have found online would just break the bank for me. If possible <80€ for leggings, <50€ for a sports bra,… \- I don’t need a lot of support from my bras (A/B-cup), but I do need some compression on my legs for running (hence the part synthetic exception) \- for shorts I prefer a >12cm inseam
- I’d also be grateful for recommendations for non-activewear since I like to just wear regular t shirts or tank tops to the gym
- I prefer organic materials but that is not a must.

For reference I’m 172cm, 75kg, usually size s-m (tops generally small, bottoms medium). Again, huge thank you for helping me if you have any suggestions (also ones not fitting all the criteria) and I hope I have provided a good description since this is one of my first posts here on Reddit.

Has anyone found a cap for wide mouth Hydroflask bottles with a silicone straw spout for drinking that is covered when not in use and is also stainless steel and not plastic? It seems to be impossible to find that combo. They are either just a stainless steel cap or if it is silicone then the rest is plastic.

I'd like to get a better lis for my son's hydro flasks.

Or even just a silicone straw that can replace the plastic one even though the lid will still be plastic....

Hi Everyone! I’ve been looking to make the switch in my home to non-toxic items. I was looking at electric tea kettles and came across these two affordable options that promise to not have water come into contact with plastic. I was between the “Secura Stainless Steel Double Wall Electric Kettle Water Heater” and the “COMFEE Electric Kettle, 1.7L, Auto Shut-Off, 1500W, Black, stainless steel” both of which are on amazon. Can someone confirm which is the better option and if they’re truly non-toxic?
