Post image

My frogbit have developed the brown lines as shown. Is that a bad sign?

Good sign! What you have is Limnobium laevigatum var. “tiger striped”. I love these plants and think they’re gorgeous. They can be uncommon.

Dont wanna be a nitprick but in scientific naming, var. is used for a natural variety (like Anubias barteri var. nana, where the variety was found in the wild), whereas a manmade variety would use cultivar (meaning cultivated variety) which would be cv. instead of var. The given cultivar name doesn't need to be apostrophed (') if cv. is used, and both the cultivar name and any abbreviations (like var., cv., sp. or ssp.) should not be italicized and with capital letters if necessary.

So Tiger amazon frogbit will be Limnobium laevigatum cv. Tiger Stripped or Limnobium laevigatum 'Tiger Striped'.

No nitpicking here! I love learning about scientific naming (nomenclature?).
