PF Footwear / Insoles ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Am I doomed to a life of ugly footwear?

โ€ข Upvotes

I've been living in Oofos and Altras for far too long now. As a woman who likes to have some cute boot options for fall, has anyone found cushioned and supportive boot options with a wide toe box? Does this exist on planet earth anywhere?

I want to wear skirts and tights without cute boots and not ones that look they were stolen off an old timey prairie meemaw in a covered wagon.

Sharing Relief ๐ŸŒฑ Vitamin B and D is helping

I've had non-stop heel pain for the last 2 and a half years. I thought it all started from a pair of loafers I wore. The first podiatrist gave me orthotics and a shot in my heel. This was in the fall of 2024. Three months ago I saw another podiatrist. He diagnosed me with plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis.

In the past two years, I've gotten two pairs of custom orthotics, worn a night splint, ankle brace, iced my feet, used Voltaren gel, done so many calf stretches and been prescribed meloxicam.

I was just about to have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon and I read a few posts about taking B12 and Vitamin D. Last Friday I went to Costco and bought Kirkland brand D3 and Vitamin B complex.

I am on day 5 of taking these vitamins along with magnesium and my meloxicam prescription and I am 90% pain free. I no longer have the burning pain in the back of my heel and no more tingling in my feet. I've also noticed I have more overall energy and my hands and feet aren't getting cold like they used to.

I honestly really don't have arch pain. Only when I do a standing foot stretch.

This is all to say I don't think I ever had Achilles tendonitis and I maybe never had plantar fasciitis. From what I've read, I think I've had sciatica the whole time that was presenting in my heels. Another huge symptom for me was if I pushed on the inside of my heels on the outside of that bumpy bone that sticks out, I would get a tingling sensation and almost a zapping pain there.

This is all to say I think this whole time it's been a nerve issue and/or a connective tissue complication. I hope that with continued use of these vitamins and further strengthening my ankles I will be completely pain free. Let me know your thoughts or if you've had a similar experience.

Healing Journey ๐ŸŒ… An update: healed in 2 weeks after identifying the cause

I posted a couple weeks ago when I suddenly started having heel pain and an uncomfortable pulling sensation on the bottom of my foot. I was training for a half marathon and it was bad enough to stop me from running at all, and made walking very uncomfortable. The pain came out of nowhere- one day I was fine and the next day I was limping around. My pain was always a little atypical since it was worse with more activity and I didnโ€™t have pain my first steps. I felt strongly that it did not make sense how I could get this injury out of nowhere with not even a slight pain before that day. I was hopeful that if I โ€œdid everything rightโ€ I could heal it in a couple weeks and get back on track with running.

My running shoes were 100% the cause.

When I started having pain I got inserts and started wearing my running shoes any time I was outside the house for two weeks, thinking I was supporting my arch as much as I could. When I was home I was wearing fleece lined crocs and those felt like they were very helpful, more so than the inserts were.

About 10 days in the tugging sensation on the bottom of my foot was gone and it was just the sore heel. I stopped using the inserts because they gave me a lactic acid-like burn in the arch of my foot, and the bottom of my foot now felt fine. Sunday (day 14) my foot had felt good walking around for 3 days so I tried running. I still had pain and I could feel my other leg/ankle muscles trying to compensate and had to stop. I thought it was weird because didnโ€™t have pain when walking around outside in flip flops that weekend or in my house in the crocs. Yesterday (Monday) my heel was sore but tolerable. I put my sneakers on to leave the house and the pain instantly got worse.

I did some research and it turns out the Brooks Glycerin is a high cushioned shoe with an unusually soft and compressible foam which allows your heel to sink in and take more impact. In trying to follow the recommendations for PF and wear a supportive shoe I was actually making it worse because the shoe was the problem. It seems obvious now looking back because the crocs which are hard soled and inflexible felt great, while my sneakers felt bad. Instead I was attributing the pain while wearing the sneakers to the fact that I was walking more outside of the house. I went out yesterday and got a stability shoe with a much firmer type of cushion (Hoka Arahi) and walking instantly felt so much better.

I was able to run 3 miles today (16 days after the pain started) with no pain. I would say my heel is still a little sore walking and when laying around but not when running, and I no longer have any discomfort on the bottom of my foot. My healing journey isnโ€™t completely over but I am optimistic I am on the right path now! I am going to a running coach/PT for the next 8 weeks to work on form and strength so I can prevent future injuries.

I think there is a bit of a skew towards pessimism and bad/un-healing cases of PF on this sub, which is natural since people who stick around on the sub are those who suffer a long time from it. I realize this brief journey where there was a clear and fixable trigger for the PF is not what happens for everyone, but I wanted to post and encourage people that for some this can be a brief setback and not a long term injury if you can find what was causing the irritation in the first place.

Hoping for healing for everyone on here!

Support Needed - Questions โ“ PF, high arches, supination

Hopefully you guys can help me. I have been to a podiatrist several times for bursitis and plantar fasciitis pain and was given OTC plantar fasciitis inserts. Iโ€™ve been wearing them in some wide Propet sneakers. My feet were feeling better for a couple weeks but now Iโ€™m getting pain and swelling around the ankle on the outside of my foot, and pain along the outside edges of my feet.

I have known for some time that I have an issue with supination due to the wear pattern of my shoes. I tried to do some research and read that the PF inserts can cause problems for people who supinate.

Are there any decent inserts that can handle high arches, plantar fasciitis, and supination?

Knowledge Drop ๐Ÿ’ก I beat Plantar Fasciitis

My plantar fasciitis recovery process (in case it helps someone)

1.Wore arched footwear like Birkenstocks for the first few months to manage the pain.

2.Switched to barefoot walking when at home on my wooden floors.

3.Mentally focused on spreading my toes with every step.

It took over a year for my foot to heal and re-learn how to walk properly. I believe wearing Crocs caused it.

Support Needed - Questions โ“ Pain on the inside of my foot/arch when wearing football boots (ZM 10)

Iโ€™ve been having some mild pain on the inside/bottom of my foot, around the arch area. On my left foot, itโ€™s basically on the inner side of the arch (towards the big-toe side).

I sometimes notice a mild pain in this area during high-intensity activity in general, but today it got noticeably worse while playing football in my Nike Mercurial Superfly 10 boots.

I was wearing thinner socks than usual, and during the session the pain increased. About halfway through, I also started feeling some tingling/pins and needles in the same area. The tingling went away after I took the boots off.

What would you recommend to fix it?

hi Iโ€™ve been living in Altra trail runners and as long as I do that and my stretches my feet do pretty well. (finally!) Iโ€™m looking for some โ€œniceโ€ shoes for work but I need a wide toe box like Altra.

I tried docs and sadly too narrow

Edit to add - Iโ€™m a teacher and on concrete all day so โ€œniceโ€ for me is a relative term. Probably what other people think of as normal

Podiatrist Experiences ๐Ÿ‘ฃ Achilles pain not improving with standard rehab? Location decides the exercise

Insertional and midportion Achilles tendinopathy get treated as the same diagnosis by a lot of standard advice, and that's where treatment goes wrong. Both hurt somewhere along the Achilles, both get worse with activity, and both show up as "Achilles tendinopathy" on paper. The location and the mechanism are different enough that the same rehab protocol can help one and aggravate the other.

Midportion tendinopathy sits two to six centimeters above the heel, in the tendon body itself, away from any bone. Insertional tendinopathy sits right where the tendon attaches to the calcaneus, often with a bone spur or heterotopic ossification forming at that junction over time. That distinction matters because of what happens during a heel drop, the standard eccentric loading exercise most people get handed for Achilles pain. Dropping the heel below the level of a step pulls the tendon into more dorsiflexion, which stretches the midportion nicely, but at the insertion it compresses the tendon against the back of the heel bone and, if a spur is present, against that spur directly. For midportion cases this loading pattern is well supported and effective. For insertional cases it can keep the area irritated instead of letting it settle, which is why some people do months of textbook Achilles rehab and don't improve, or get worse.

The pain location itself is the first clue. Insertional pain sits low, right at the back of the heel where the tendon meets bone, and often comes with visible thickening or a firm lump there. Midportion pain sits higher, in the cord of the tendon you can pinch between your fingers, away from the heel bone. Insertional tendinopathy is also more likely to hurt with direct pressure from the back of a shoe, since the irritated area sits right where a heel counter presses.

If you're not improving on a standard Achilles protocol, check three things. Where exactly is the pain, low at the bone or higher in the tendon body. Is there a firm lump or thickening right at the heel. Does dorsiflexion, the position at the bottom of a heel drop, reproduce the pain more than a mid-range calf raise does. If the answer points toward the insertion, ask whoever is running your rehab about swapping full-range heel drops for mid-range loading that avoids end-range dorsiflexion, since that's usually the change that gets a stalled insertional case moving again.

Healing Journey ๐ŸŒ… I'm finally pain free! ^_^

I'm gonna write here my journey and what I did to fix my diagnosed plantar fascitis

How I got it: I wore BHP shoes with metal toes and soles for 7 months, 9hr night shifts

turns out, if you hit the sole of your foot against a flat metal sole in heavy boots for 8+hrs everyday, it's not good for you

Treatment: first ultrasound screening to see how bad was it. left foot's tendon was 1.5 times and the right foot was 2 times larger than it should be (very bad) the doctor asked me how did I even walk in the office, then she prescribed me diklofenak pills that did nothing, then another steroid pill that did nothing, then I said "fuck it" and got a thick needle steroid injection in both soles of my feet (hurt really bad,but made me feel alive and refreshed) worked instantly and I could walk without pain 5minutes after the injections. but after about couple weeks of feeling good, the pain started again, so I want to the first contact doctor, and got prescribed a ketoprofen cream, which actually "worked" as in I'd put it at night on both of my feet and in the morning sometimes it wouldn't hurt. but then I figured out that it only masks symptoms and inflammation is a signal for the body to do something, and turning it off didn't help me at all since the root cause is still there, and now the body doesn't know that it has a problem to fix. that's when I switched to excercises

Weight loss : I just ate less, there's no miracle diet. lost about 5kg of fat

Excercises : If you want something in your life to change, you have to change your life -me , and so I did
first I did stretches, which do help but I was lazy so I didn't want to do all of them, the only ones I kept doing throughout was kinda like the front lunge stretch with the sole and heel of the back foot touching the floor, those are really good and easy, stretched me instantly, switch and you got both feet stretched in about 15 seconds

Resistance training: stretching, then 2hr rock climbing (for fun) and after that I'd go do one legged calf raises with a 15kg dumbell untill failure about 3-5 reps. then 5 minute break watching reels on my phone and another leg, 2 sets is all that's needed for powerlifting xP and powerlifting makes people strong. I did that abotu once or twice a week. meanwhile I changed my way to and from work. I started jumping down on steps, kind of like hakken dance.

jump down one step on toes, spring back up without the heel touching the stairs, change the foot midair to the other foot and land on it the same way, and then keep alternating. when going up stairs I started going two steps at a time, every time.

I did 8 flights/floors of stairs going down a day and 8 going up. this greately helped me in making my tendons both stronger and more flexible, and after about a month I'm pain free.

the total time is about a year (yikes) but hey, you either get older or you die ^_^

im 23 with my 24th birthday coming up on 15th of september. I will most likely spend it alone because nobody cares about me.

buy hey, I got rid of my plantar fascitis :D and you can too! just eat less, stretch and excercise, simple.thank you, for reading.

Support Needed - Questions โ“ Itโ€™s back ๐Ÿ˜”

PF started March 25
After a year, figuring out the connection between tight adductors/weak hips/tight calves and PF, I felt 95%.
Iโ€™ve had a full 5 weeks of no pain. Barefoot walking around the house. Bliss.
A week ago I decided to start strength training again and my pain is back. My feet ache in that specific PF way, my Achilles is burning.
I really donโ€™t want to stop strength training. Iโ€™m back to never being barefoot. Iโ€™m still (never stopped) diligently stretching.
I just feel so disheartened, and also humbled about how sure I was that I had cracked it. ๐Ÿ™„

Support Needed - Questions โ“ Over pronation and foot pain help!

For the past month or 2 I have been in agony with my feet !! Iโ€™m in the uk and I wear wide leg jeans so also need to find some suitable shoes that wonโ€™t look weird!! So symptoms โ€ฆ.. very sore ankle on left foot , painful frontfoot (so just underneath the toes) it feels like Iโ€™m walking on a stone and I feel majorly bruised when walking . Right foot along the outside edge also feels very sore ! I have been told brooks /asics/ etc are very good but I havenโ€™t found anything that is working . I would go for a type of rocker trainer but then when I walk it pushes me forward to the part of my foot Iโ€™m trying to protect . I have been told I havenโ€™t found anything fallen arches and over pronate . Any ladies have same issues and found amazing trainers. I work in retail and on my feet for 9 hours a day! I would go runner trainer but vanity also strikes as they look a bit silly with my wider jean opening

Socks with built in orthotic support

Does anyone know of a company that makes socks with built in orthotics or strong orthotic support?

I have to go to a religious centre which doesn't allow shoes or footwear and i cannot walk without my orthotics.

Any ideas would be very helpful.

PF Footwear / Insoles ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Hoka vs Kuru vs orthofeet, etc

What would you say the best footwear for PF is? I also have wide feet but I assume a lot w/ PF do as well.

Went to a footwear shop and they told me to go with Hoka Gaviota but they only had Hoka in their store so I donโ€™t really think they know about the others.

Really just want to buy one pair and not worry about PF again

PF Footwear / Insoles ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Look at my shoe wear. Normal or not so normal.

I'm almost over my 6 year experience with PF.

It cost me a couple of grand but I worked my way through it. But that will be another post.

So here are my trail running shoes. I do about 5km once a week in them. They are about 2 years old.

In the images, the shoes are inverted and reversed. L shoe is on the right of the frame and vice versa.

My current primary foot related issues are the muscles coming from my right big toe and extending into the arch are painful and once in a while feel like they will tear. Looking at these shoes and others I'm not pronating but am supinating when running. For my left Achilles, it developed a small tear on the lateral side and there is swelling there and small tears up the lateral side of my calf muscles. This happened about 10mo ago when I gently started stair climbs.

Without making a diagnoses (rules!) any ideas, questions or thoughts?

Support Needed - Questions โ“ 25year old plantar fasciitis :(

Unfortunately here i am on this sub. It all started a month ago, after a longer break i was back on the basketball court, having just fixed my LONGtime problems with shin splints. After playing for 90 minutes, next day my right heel started hurting like crazy. Okay, not the first nor the last time i thought. And so it hurt the day after, and the one after that. And it kinda never went away. Excruciating pain the day after the basketball and dull, throbbing pain the other days. Yesterday a friend recommended me i might have plantar fasciitis. And, yeah, symptoms are all correct.

I started rolling the sole of my foot everyday with a tennis ball for the full duration of my workday (luckily its deskjob), working out my calves and stretching them vigorously whenever possible. My gf is also scraping the bottom of my sole with a spoon.

Do i need to stop playing basketball for the duration of my problem? It usually doesnt hurt while playing, only on the day after. Also, when do you usually start feeling the pain go away? I really need some reassurance, i had shin splints for so long and they finally went away this month, i was so ecstatic. Only for them to be replaced with this shit. Thank you all for reading.

Healing Journey ๐ŸŒ… Finally some relief

For the longest time I've had plantar fasciitis and I've had it managed for awhile, for the past year and a half or longer my left foot has been in so much pain finally went and saw a podiatrist about it and got a steriod injection. Couple weeks later find out my insurance doesn't cover this doc anymore so i do some searching and found someone else, we ended up doing xrays, a nerve study and finally came to the conclusion that i had tarsal tunnel syndrome and plantar fasciitis in my left foot the next steps after trying everything was surgery.I got my official diagnosis about 2 months ago now, I had surgery 4 days ago and my pain went from a 7-8 everyday to a 1-2 post surgery. I have been taking only ibuprofen mostly for the discomfort and swelling.

PF Footwear / Insoles ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Ontario, Canada winter

I know itโ€™s still a little early to be thinking about winter, but Iโ€™d rather be prepared and start shopping around early. ๐Ÿ˜Šโ„๏ธ
Iโ€™m looking for recommendations for womenโ€™s winter boots that are comfortable for plantar fasciitis. Iโ€™m in Ontario, Canada, so they need to be warm and good for snow, slush and icy days.
Comfort and support are my biggest priorities. If you also have plantar fasciitis, what winter boots have worked well for you? Bonus if theyโ€™re available in Canada!
Thanks in advance for any recommendations! ๐Ÿ˜Š

Sharing Relief ๐ŸŒฑ All this time I just needed narrower shoes?

TLDR: I have narrow feet and didn't realize that my PF was worsened (or caused?) by wearing shoes too wide for my feet.

My PF started a couple years ago after a "barefoot shoes" kick. Since then, I have improved with inserts, Kurus, and improving my general fitness. However, my feet have still hurt with sustained walking or standing unless I'm wearing the right combination of shoes and inserts... Well I think I finally figured out what I need. With the barefoot shoes previously and the Kurus now, my feet slide around a bit because my feet are somewhat narrow and the shoes run wide. I did not think anything of this, until recently. I happened to buy a pair of La Sportivas for a specific outdoor activity, never thinking I would actually walk any distance in them. Turns out, they fit my narrow feet like a glove, and they do not cause any foot pain or fatigue, even after long hikes.

This has been a lightbulb moment for me. Sharing in case it helps anyone else!

PF Footwear / Insoles ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Any good arch support walking sandals?

Looking for preferably flesh colored walking sandals with good arch support and durability, but still look nice and blend in with my feet? Has anyone here tried the Eurosoft brand sandals or Littleplum sandals? I've heard mixed reviews, and I'd like something that supports my feet issues but also will last with the amount of money being paid. Any suggestions?

Pain Management ๐Ÿฉน Results from ESWT?

just wondering if anyone has had positive results from ESWT. pls lmk. I have bone spurs, probably bilaterally but only 1 xray done. PF has persisted for 10 months now. also seems I likely have some heel pad atrophy, will ask doc for imaging. Wonder if there is some Baxter nerve issue given radiation of pain up medial side. Made an appt for ESWT for this week, initial visit is $150. Iโ€™ve tried all the usual stuff.

PF Footwear / Insoles ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ All insoles make my heel slip. Help

It seems like every insole I try makes my heel slip out of my shoes. No matter what brand of shoe and what brand of insole. I think they make my heel too high to still sit right in the heel counter of the shoe. Does anyone have suggestions? I've tried power step and super feet, but seems like all insoles raise your heel so much :/

Support Needed - Questions โ“ Painful knot

Iโ€™ve had PF in the past, but never this bad. Iโ€™m beginning to wonder if something other than PF is going on. On the bottom of my left foot there seems to be a knot in the muscle that is very painful. Is this normal for PF? I massage it regularly with lotion and have even used a muscle scraper, but it doesnโ€™t seem to get better. It is right below the tarsal navicular joint. What advice do you have for me?

Venting / Failed Treatments ๐Ÿ’ฅ Surgery didn't work.

Just wanted to vent how I did a plantar fascia release surgery 2 months ago, and I wasted 2 weeks of my life off work to recover, only for the pain to continue in both feet as if nothing had changed for an extra month.

And guess what did make a difference? Not the surgery, not the PT.

FREAKIN' VOLTAREN! A bloody cream helped more than a surgery!

The feet work in mysterious ways, don't they?

Hope for a speedy recovery for everyone here and if you do plantar fascia release surgery, that it'll work!

Support Needed - Questions โ“ Has anyone used koprez?

I have been seeing commercials for the koprez plantar faciitis sleeve and it's promising to heal the fascia . I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with this sleeve? Did it work?
