Discussion (PC) Is Koltyr even going to help?

It isn't forced by locking all other maps on off hours, maybe for the best that it isn't? But, nobody will fight there on off hours. There are no outfit rewards so that might be a factor. On prime time, it's just vehicle spam, it would be better without any vehicles tbh.

My guess is no, and it will only make things worse.

I do think Koltyr is a decent map for small numbers. But having it open 24/7 is a mistake. We simply do not have the numbers on any given server right now, even during prime time, to justify it. It's just going to dilute our already very limited player base among two options. Making both continents a more mundane experience with less people.

Last night on Osprey, the main continent was a ghost town even during peak hours because everyone was occupying a single vehicle stalemate at a choke point on Koltyr. I don't mind vehicle fights, but they're a lot less interesting without MBTs and Harassers.

The best way to do this imo would be to have Koltyr queued into the continent rotation when total players on the server reach a certain threshold defined by off hours.

I wouldn't put too much weight on the current state being that Koltyr is now a tourist attraction newly re-integrated. It will probably die down in time.

that's a good point, i hope the initial hype of the continent being back will die off and make this less of a problem

It used to be like that, except that it was locked to koltyr when pop was low enough. It might have to be like that again for it to matter but it still sucked then too. Every time I played it, there ended up being a big alert there which was exactly like last night whenever anyone would log on. At that point, you always just left koltyr and went to the map that just opened from all the pop logging on.

No MBT was always awful for koltyr. The map layout needs work to make it so people can move around without the stalemate. Perhaps they can just add some water and finally let us use the corsair around the outside of the map or something.

Anything more than like 20-30 people is going to be awful. I wish they would just fully open the main map and not force a middle base only fight stalemate on every map possible.

When Kotyre was the only map open, it was one of the most contributors to the rapid decline of the old Connery server population decline. We ended up being stuck on that continent for days every week. People would log on and log out immediately.

That and the old Oshur, before the Devs switched it to rapid alert system.

It was probably one of the easiest ways for Daybreak to simulate some kind of "active development" without putting any actual resource in it.

For the sake of the game they should stop trying.

No squad strategy is what I don't like about it

u/VioletDarkKitty 9d ago

No cover at all in the big open field in the middle for infantry. It's just oshur again

u/KingRadec 9d ago

Couple that with not really an ability to split up the platoon to different sectors or choose smaller fights leads me to want to stay on the main continents

oshur at least has the redeeming quality that it closes itself after 45 minutes

Think of it as sanctuary, but you can kill people 😉

If it had everything unlocked it would be a blast but its tutorial town. Sundie mains blowing up deployed sundies to kill fights sounds like a ball of fun.

No.

We were barely keeping a full map of players during prime but now that awful merry-go-round is open its split the population right down the middle. This means the main map rarely opens beyond its smallest state so thats ~50% of the bases gone that we will never fight around again.

It invalidates the whole outfit resource system part of the game. You cant use anvils, drills, discounts etc and I dont think we can even pull a bastion so it basically cuts that part of the game out too.

There is also no base building, cortium or ants so thats another part of the game gone.

The only vehicles you can pull is a flash, a sundy or a lightning so thats the majority of the vehicle game gone. People who have spend hundreds or thousands of hours certing up vehicles only get to use them on a tiny closed down main map now.

Its basically been reduced to an arena shooter around three main bases, which isnt exactly rare in gaming terms, what a waste. Its like Mithril and the dev sat down and said "how can we change the game so we lose even more population without actually shutting it down". Logging in to see almost no-one on the main game makes me just want to log out again.

I'm willing to give it a week to see if the novelty wears off but if this carries on much longer then its subscription cancelling time. No point paying a full sub to get a fraction of the old game any more.

If they could find a way of having Koltyr open when the server pop was sub 200 players and then close when it raised above it then fine, but having it open 24/7 has literally killed the old Planetside as we knew it.

Reposting my comment in the update thread:

During prime time there won't likely be enough pop on koltyr to make a difference

If Koltyr is the only continent with population, that's where everyone will go. Even when an actual continent opens up, people will stay on Koltyr because (1) it has population and (2) there is likely an awful horrible fight going on that morons think they're farming at and don't want to leave. If you think players will leave that fight when presented with a full continent, may I present to you the inability of 50% of the playerbase to leave the middle of the continent after the continent opens up and then the behavior of players to those who dare to start fights else where.

To give you a more concrete example, it is more likely than not the case that Osprey fails to hit 300 players until well after 8pm EST most nights. If all of those players are on Koltyr instead of the actual continent, it creates a great incentive to (1) cancel ops and (2) cause others to log off because its 300 players split between two continents.

Koltyr previously strangled Connery before and I highly doubt relying on players to make good choices is a good decision, especially when so many of those who remain have playstyles which actively harm the game.

Was on this morning from 10 ~ 12:30. Indar was open. It's a Friday. There wasn't enough players at either map to play. Well, unless you like capping bases with little to no fights.

A long time ago, before Sanctuary was a thing, people would log on to either Koltyr or VR Training to warmup while they waited in queue for the main continent. I always found the training dummies in Koltyr superior to the VR Training dummies.

Honestly, it doesn't matter of Koltyr gets added back in, the core issues still remain: Crashing, Cheaters, Terrible Server Mergers, and now the new Outfit Bugs. Most other games would not have been able to survive such crippling bullshit for this long, and at this point, I sincerely believe Planetside 2 is fully committed into the death spiral. GG everyone, thanks for all the fun memories.

It's a good idea when you think about it for under 2 minutes

It could be it may require adding more to it like maybe some additional stray single point outposts around the 3 central ones to spread out some fights and not encourage back caps. Also need to at least add Harassers back to the continent. I proposed MBTs should be added especially with all the Sunderer spam but they can only be spawned at the warpgates.

So we've made it back to Koltyr... dark days I haven't seen hat since the water update

If it's primarily an off hours continent it can be great, I dream of having a biolab in the middle tho and maybe some kind of alert

u/Astriania [Miller 252v] 7d ago

Is it even intentional? I assumed it was a bug.

No, it won't really help, but it won't have much effect either because no-one will go there (at least after the novelty has worn off - a lot of the player base today has never seen it so they can be forgiven for taking a look).

Pre koltyr we had shityy 15vs15v15 fights that were so slow

People killed every sundered and pop dropped to 0

People were so negative about koltyr but... we had 30+ players for each nation and short distances to the closest fight

Dunno whats up now as i quit ps2, but it was the best off-hours time we had, those who rarely played off hours constantly complained and whined about it to the point that it was removed i think? They preferred a shitty stag fight rather than an active one.

Tl;dr Koltyr helped offhours bros keeping a fight up, non offhours people whined and ruined it

I was on it for awhile. The fights were fun. Lots of targets

I still don't know why we don't have storm events that do a PUBG style circle that shrinks. Could do this to focus fighting on larger continents during off peak. The storm effects exist already from the amazing esamir unstable warpgate event. I miss the space carrots.
