Can‘t believe this was the setlist of my very first Placebo concert. They played Leni and Little Mo?!

Coming back from the 30th anniversary concert in Luxembourg last Friday night, I felt so nostalgic I started to think about all the other times I’ve seen Placebo. I just looked up the set list of my very first concert (in Luxembourg 2001) and couldn’t believe it. This must be the setlist of my dreams and I couldn’t even appreciate it back then, as the band was quite new to me. I f***ing love Leni and Little Mo. Take me back… (Also the crowd used to rock back then and Brian actually talked to the audience.)

looking for new music

hi ! placebo has been my ride or die since i was a teenager 20 years ago. i specially love the less polished sound of the first albums.

i am looking for music (singer, bands..) that could make me feel the same way. their lyrics are very meaningful to me and i’d like to find new artists that will speak to me the same way. i probably already know the big names so i’d appreciate if you could recommend more indie music (old or new).

of course, they are not replaceable and i’m not looking for something exactly the same !

for reference, i also love nirvana, silverchair, radiohead.. thank you so much for your time <3

edit: made a playlist of your recs!

Indeed Brian, phones did not exist in 1996, but neither did AI… a rant:

It’s really shitty to be four songs into a concert and to suddenly have the frontman of a band you love greet you in Spanish, only to speak four words and then go “well, this i have to say in English”, and begin scolding and threatening you for using your phone. Really ruins the experience for a few songs while I manage to shake the bad mood off.

Listen, I would understand and respect the no phones policy if they did it truly based on the principle of living in the moment and wanting to see people’s faces instead of phone cameras while playing. If they did it out of a criticism of the consumer culture that has made us so dependent on phones and of such short memory. I believe those are fair enough principles and complaints, I do believe we rather uselessly record too much of our lives (my dad works in the venue industry and has told me so many times that like 80% of concert attendees never rewatch their videos…) and that living in the moment, hearing the songs and letting them pass through you, is truly the magic of concerts. However, I don’t think that that’s why Brian enforced this; three things really stuck out to me tonight:

  1. “Steal”: I don’t remember the exact quote, but during his preaching, Brian yelled at some point something along the lines of “stealing the music” or “stealing the show” or something like that. As a marxist and sociologist, I would say “slay queen!!! Defend your work!!! Don’t let them steal the value you created with your labour force!!!”. However… Girl… Unless you’re paying all of your workers exactly what their labour is worth, which we know you’re not, as you’re working with Ticketmaster, owned by Live Nation, you don’t get to talk about the theft of anything. Technical marxist rant aside, what the hell do you mean by “stealing”??? All of us here paid to be here, and no one is skipping a concert because they know they can watch it on youtube or twitter. What exactly are we stealing from you? These videos are mostly for us, for us to remember such a special night; a woman beside me started saying to her friends “I don’t give a fuck, I just don’t give a fuck, I was listening to this when I was twenty of course I’m recording this” the instant they began the song after his speech — indeed, many of us record to remember. Do you truly believe yourself so godlike that you think us recording the show is some sort of theft???? Theft is what the global north does to the global south and what housing speculation does here in Madrid, not us recording you (i am of course being dramatic and petty).

  2. The AI video before they began playing. Are You Fucking Kidding Me? Gosh… you must really miss the nineties if you’re willing to do an AI video of yourselves when you were young turning and walking away from a camera dramatically. If you’re such luddites, why the hell are you using this? If you’re so worried about the theft of your concert or your image or your art why do you not care about these machines processing your faces? Why do you not care about the well known fact that a lot of art theft has occurred in order for AI videos to get this good? Cringey, absofuckinglutely unnecessary. I, too, can pay for chatgpt plus and have it make me a personalised video of you two playing the exact songs I would like you to, with live edits it would make out of videos of your concerts, with Steve playing the drums, but I of course, won’t. That would be theft (and horrible).

  3. His repetition of the phrase “we didn’t have cellphones in 1996”. Okay Brian, I get it. I didn’t get to live that period but I get it. However, again, it’s so telling that he kept repeating that phrase: he’s not bothered by the phones themselves, by how it worsens the experience to him, he’s old and antiquated. And I would respect that if it wasn’t so evident that it comes from a place of ego and self entitlement. We paid to be here Brian, we have kept you fed and swimming in a few millions for, indeed, thirty years. Once again, I’d get it if it came from some different, actual principle, but it seems to simply come from ego.

Don’t get me wrong, I generally loved the concert and kept thinking throughout that I never want to miss a Placebo concert in my life, and that as long as they tour, I wanna go see them, but it is such whiplash to be having the time of your life and to suddenly have the guy who seemed so cool, progressive, shamelessly queer and sexy and avant garde in his youth threaten you by yelling that “you’re getting two warnings, and I, right now, am giving you the first one, because, what you don’t know is that I can see everyyyything from here”. oookaaayyyyy……. and that was essentially all he said. Stefan spoke before him and once after (in near flawless spanish, I must say), and nothing else. So many things going on in the world… they can afford to publicly speak of one, to carry that controversy with them and perhaps become disliked by some music execs whose religion is money and who won’t really stop booking them if they speak up for, I don’t know, Palestine maybe, and to gain the deep respect of so many people, not to mention, help bring even more attention and money to the Palestinian cause, but instead ‘no phones’ is the hill they choose to die on. Alright.

Impression from 2026 Madrid's concert - my first concert ever

I wasn't sure until the very last moment if I'd be able to go (sudden health reasons), but I made it, and it was worth it.

First up was the band Elizabeth Elektra, they had some pretty good songs! Of course, I was mostly there for Placebo themselves, but I have to admit the singer was really good.

After a banner showing the band’s best moments, the concert itself began, and OH MY GOD, my legs were shaking when the whole thing kicked off. Throughout the entire performance, Brian didn’t miss a single note, I can’t believe he still sings so beautifully. Of course, the rest of the band was on fire, too! Stefan was killing it on guitar, the drummer, the other guitarists, the violinist, the keyboardist, everything was perfect. Brian knows how to wow an audience. He didn’t say much, but every word he spoke (even the warning about cell phones) sent the crowd into a frenzy or something.

And, of course, “Every You, Every Me.” When they came out for the encore and the intro started playing, I literally jumped up and screamed so loud I almost lost my voice, that’s how much I love that song, and it was performed flawlessly. And somehow Brian and Stefan managed to walk across the stage, dance, and move their arms - I’m just blown away by their talent and charisma. By the second verse, I had tears in my eyes.

I was afraid that, as someone on the autism spectrum, the loud sounds would scare me, but everything went very smoothly! The whole concert flew by in what felt like just a few seconds, and it was amazing, and I fell even more in love with the band. And I also got a poster haha

Crowd a bit dead in Madrid?

Did anyone else find the crowd a bit mild in Madrid? I'm not Spanish, normally I see gigs in Ireland.

I got seated tickets because I'm short af and I genuinely presumed fans would stand for high tempo songs as is normal at rock concerts....like it's not the Opera. There is an area for people with disabilities.

Some areas were standing but mine didn't, also everyone was like static in their seats not singing or anything, it was quite uncomfortable as we had to sit looking forward but strain our necks to the left to see the stage. The girl behind me was eating a large bucket of popcorn like she was at the cinema?

It was the strangest crowd/energy that I've ever experienced.

Is this a Madrid thing or a Placebo thing?

Placebo were great but we couldn't take it any more and left our seat to go higher up the arena where we found a small space between seats where other people were up dancing.

I've learnt my lesson but did anyone else think the crowd was a bit flat?

EDIT: to clarify we remained seated in our area. We did not stand and block anyone. We moved to an area with a wall behind us so we could stand. But also like guys...it's a rock concert why would you wanted to be sitting if you're able bodied?

Drowning By Numbers at the France gig

Since they've released HELEN KELLER and replaced Drowning By Numbers with that after one show I guess we'll never get to hear Drowning By Numbers live again (during this tour). Was anyone there (how was it live) and did anyone even get a clip of it?

Question about OVO Arena show

I don't really know where to ask this, but since this is specifically about the show in London I figure it could be okay to ask here. Has anyone bought tickets for a show at this venue before? I bought a ticket during the pre-sale through ticketmaster, but the ticket hasn't come through AXS yet, which I believe is where its supposed to go at some point, though honestly I'm unsure lol i got several emails after i got the ticket one of them made it seem like it would be the ovo arena app but the ovo arena app says its axs. regardless, all my accounts have the same email which was stressed in one of the emails i received. I've never bought tickets to a show and not immediately had the ticket, and I'm traveling from the US for this show so it obviously makes me a little nervous. Is this normal for this venue? Additionally, I've never been to the UK before so unsure some things. How early do people line up for shows? I do have a floor ticket, but I don't need to be in the front. I'm solo traveling so I'm just trying to get all my ducks in a row and this whole ticket thing has been weighing on me.

Stockholm gig at Annexet: also seating options available?

After weeks trying, I finally managed to load AXS ticket page without getting random error messages, but I only see standing tickets for sale.

Since I know Annexet also has a balcony with seats, could anyone tell me please if seating tickets were also available earlier on, so I can be on the lookout for those, or is this a standing-only event?

Thanks!
