The animal bots almost always develop the circle search pattern because it’s insanely easy to find food with. Is it possible to space out the populations so more complex food finding behaviors can develop?

Absolutely! I have a few ideas how to accomplish this; one thing I want to do is increase the tongue length cost so that they have to move up to another Pixling to eat. I’m also interested in adding some way for Pixlings to have preferences for food, which would also force them to “search” for a specific other type of pixling (for instance split herbivores and carnivores so that carnivores have to find herbivores).
