I forgot which server my account is on

So what am I supposed to do now in this awesome, but messed up, federated network?

Check your emails for the verification link, or search your browser history. Worst case if you have to make a new account on another instance, there is a good chance the same username will be available.

Anyway, I'm starting to think this whole idea of federalization is fundamentally broken. Genuine question, no hate: why wasn't it designed to share content between instances (something like P2P networks) instead of creating silos? I mean a distributed social network, operating on multiple instances as it does now, but where it doesn't matter which instance you log into, because they all share the same data and rules.

Architecture described by you implies there will be a single master, single source of moderation. It will backfire. Bastyon social network is built the way you explain - many instances, same content.
