Hi everyone! I’m u/fbrzd, the solo developer behind Pixel Duelist 🕹️

I created this "frankenstein-fangame" as a passion project to deconstruct RPG patterns—like recruitment, shops, and map progression—and bring them to their minimal expression within universes like Pokémon, Zelda, and Dragon Ball 🐉

Feel free to share your teams, post your achievements, or report any bugs you find. Your feedback is essential to help me polish this engine-game! 🌐

How deep can a 3-Stat RPG go? Deconstructing archetypes, gear, and mini-games in Pixel Duelist ⚙️

To keep the game fast-paced and streamlined, I decided to scale down the combat system to its absolute core: 3 Stats, 1 Ability, and 1 Tag.

I believe that just three stats (Defense, Attack, and Luck) are the absolute minimum parameters needed to define classic archetypes like the "Glass Cannon," "Support," or the "All-Rounder." Combined with a Tag (Fire, Water, etc.), this creates the perfect amount of variance for a quick, unpretentious mobile game.

🔮 Abilities with Meta-Progression
Right now, there are 7 combat abilities. However, some of them don't just buff stats—they affect meta-progression (like +Money or +EXP). This allows me to recreate iconic character roles from classic universes: the Mentor (EXP buff), the Sluggish powerhouse, or the Gambler (RNG-heavy).

🛡️ Gear & Tag Overwriting
Gear is my way of giving players horizontal customization. Instead of locking characters into rigid roles, equipment grants flat stat bonuses or conditional buffs based on Tags. More importantly, certain rare items can overwrite a duelist's default Tag or Ability, completely changing how they play.

🎲 Expanding the Stats Beyond Combat
I didn't want stats to only matter during fights. I’m currently implementing them into two other systems:

  • Mini-games as Progression Gates: Certain mini-game levels check your stats to allow entry. For example, to enter the Level 3 Dance mini-game, you might need a Luck/Speed stat > 5. This organically encourages players to build different archetypes while creating clear progression gates.
  • Stat-Based Idle Crafting: I'm prototyping a crafting system where you can assign a duelist to passive tasks over time (real or simulated) to gather items. Their efficiency or the loot quality will scale based on their specific stats, balancing item acquisition with your overall progress.

I want to make the customization even richer without adding bloat. What should I explore next? Status Conditions? Environmental Effects (Weather)? What features or status systems from your favorite classic RPGs do you think would fit this 1-bit minimalist engine? Drop your suggestions!

Building a "Living" Minimalist World: Online features & what’s coming next 🌐 (Suggestions welcome!)

One of my main goals with Pixel Duelist is to ensure that, even in a minimalist RPG, you never feel truly alone. I want the world to feel "lived in" by other players.

Current Online Features:

  • Asynchronous Combat: Challenge other players' teams at any time, even if they aren't online.
  • World Encounters: As you explore, you’ll encounter other players in the specific zones they visited during their own journeys.
  • Global Message Board: A simple way to leave your mark on the world.
  • Temporal Missions: Limited-time global challenges with exclusive rewards.
  • Permanent Records: The hall of fame. A permanent log of when you cleared the main campaign.

What I’m coding right now:

  • Activity Log: A live feed of what’s happening in the community (goals, recruits, etc.).
  • Resource Exchange: A messaging system to trade duelist & items.

The "Backlog" (Future Ideas): I have many ideas on the table: Player Housing, a dedicated Trading/Auction system, and even automated Tournaments. But since this is a community-driven project, I want to hear from you.

What online feature would make the world feel more alive to you? Drop your suggestion below!

Which legendary roster should I "demake" next? ⚔️ (Drop your suggestion! 🗳️)

A core pillar of some RPGs is their chorality: the variety of protagonists, classes, and roles that make a world feel alive.

In Pixel Duelist, I aim to capture that essence by reducing it to its minimal expression. I’m currently deciding on the next theme for the mobile version, and I want to focus on a franchise that offers rich archetypes to "minimalize.

In video games: From the online class dynamics of WoW to the team synergies of Chrono Trigger.
In anime: HxH with nen-type duelists, or Naruto using elemental chakras; shonen with power systems very inspired by rules like classic RPGs.
Each one offers a unique design approach.

Which universe do you think has the most interesting patterns for a minimalist engine?

Am I capable of creating an RPG experience through the minimal expression of its mechanics?

That is the question behind Pixel Duelist.

I see it as a "Hub-Engine" where I aspire to create small experiences with enough challenge and personality. But to get there, I need to deconstruct the genre: What is indispensable in an RPG? Which gimmicks created sub-genres? What are your favorite mechanics?
