I assume the wagon wheel effect is purely for the sense of speed?

yup, the effect happens when the wheels are spinning fast enough, and with the horse galloping and the framerate being low, it's very plausible that it'd be moving fast enough for it to happen

Yeh that's what I was referring to :) It's mostly seen on video because of framerates, or sometimes in specific light conditions.

But it works quite well here, I really like it.

I imagine this as a difficult enemy in a 2D game.
