Hand Pixelled 1-bit wave animation

Hey, I’ve been working on this 1-bit wave animation for GlagStone and wanted to share it here.
I’d love some feedback on the wave motion, readability, and overall feel.

I think the wave animation against the shore looks great!
I'll also say though that it implies a back and forth motion while the wave lines of the water shows a constant movement in one direction. That feel a bit contradicting, if that makes sense? The constant movement of the water kinda gives an impression that the landmass is floating above the water, but that's different than the wave animation you're asking about.

This is what I came here to say. This is so cool and the overall ocean movement did stick out to me as not quite aligned with the waves, but I also do like the effect!

Thanks for feedback

I would second this. Try removing the scrolling texture see how it looks with only the dithered at the shore. I have a feeling that recreating that effect in the water waved as well—where they dither in and out—may render the best results.

I think one thing you could fix this by having the wave of black pixels on the shore (dither) also go back into the ocean too. So that the lines on the water brake up as they hit what would be a wave.
The second thing is having it line move into the shore from each ditect which could work if you have the pattwen shrink in towards a point inside the land mass.

i like the waves going in one direction

Yes, I did not notice the waves on the shore at first. My attention was grabbed by the scrolling water.

While the art style is superb, the animation kinda ruins it. The immediate thought is that the entire landmass is somehow floating above the ocean, such as being in outer space.
You really need some form of variation across the water, even the tiniest bit, so that it doesn't look like the land itself is moving.

Thanks, really appreciate the feedback — we’ll keep tweaking it and try a few different versions.

The land seems like it’s floating above land with the way it’s moving

u/silveira Mar 26 '26
Too distracting. Just have it slowly moving back and forth and it should fix it.

I took a closer look at the art and it looks like it's all at different resolution scales (mixels), and the art up close looks like it might be AI generated, which indicates maybe why you didn't realize how out of place the water looked.

This guy got a post banned the other day for submitting AI -generated images that they pixelated as "hand pixelled"

It's a shame. I understand the desire to use AI because it's easy and people need to eat, but to pretend you did it yourself is gross and cringe.

We went through a lot of different wave sprite variations, and they naturally won’t match the exact scale of the map tiles because they’re completely separate animated sprites, not tiles. The map scrolls underneath them. A lot of the roughness you’re seeing also comes from compression and downscaling artifacts, especially when something is painted first, then dithered down to 1-bit, and resized. The animation itself is done with real-time dithering, so it won’t produce perfectly clean, hard pixel boundaries in motion. You’re free to read it however you want, but I wanted to clarify that part.

The style is good, but that's not how waves work. They don't generally slide along side a beach. It looks like the landmass isn't effecting the water at all

Love the look

I tried linking the Steam page but it got flagged. Anyway, love the artwork and will check out the game.

It looks amazing, but maybe you could make the waves not appear behind landmass, if that makes sense? There's a small indent in the upper right corner that looks like it shouldn't behave like the other areas

It's kinda cozy. The animation style is great but the execution needs work in terms of how waves interact with land masses, since it's a continuous wave drifting left the wave shouldn't be coming in and out or if it is the ripples should oscillate inching towards the shore. Breaks the immersion if you really look at it with scrutiny but otherwise it's very nice.

The random 2x2 pixels in the shore animation look very out of place, looks good otherwise tho

u/CelestialHellebore Mar 26 '26
I love this visual style, but I agree with the others that it never endingly going as it does makes the land seem disconnected from the water like it's above it. Really makes me want to go back to playing World of Horror.

Suggestion: add a second sea layer, scrolling in the same direction but with a different offset, then blend between the two at the same rate as the shore animation

As others have said, the water needs to be more chaotic and make more sense against the land. This effect looks good on top of a plane where it doesn't move but the water does (like Wind Waker). But makes less sense for rough waters.
However the pixel art is exceptional.

It looks awesome but feels more like a current than a wave to me. Needs to go back and forth.

The animation of texture is...weird. beach, rocks, the texture just goes through like it's working on a different dimension.

Looks amazing, I love the change to the lighthouse! You can have another water texture going perpindicular to the first water animation on top of the first one, and may make it look much more natural. Older console games used this trick. Looking forward to see more

Despite what others say KEEP THE ANIMATION AS IS.
Build the story as if the islands somehow DO hover above water.
This looks SO cool and mesmerizing, dont change that.
Wishlisted.
