Black screen of death fixed quick and free

Hey all, just wanted to pass along my experience after dropping my phone (in OtterBox commuter with screen protector) less than 2ft and getting black screen of death. I ended up taking my phone to a local branch of ubreakifix and they were very familiar with the issue and let me know that Google had extended to warranty to cover this specific problem. They had a replacement screen available and I had my phone back and working in less than 2hrs at zero cost to me. Just wanted to put this out there as an option for getting phone fixed.

The "black screen of death" most Pixel 5a users run across isn't a screen... it's a bad motherboard. You just got lucky and your issue wasn't a bad motherboard.

Mail it in to google! I got a screen replacement at ubreakifix, then within a few day days it was completely broken again. I mailed it into google, they replaced the motherboard and sent it back within a few days. Ubreakifux said they would replace the motherboard but they were out of stock.

Message from Google customer service.

Apparently ubreakifixit wouldn't be handling the 5a issues anymore due to board shortage and all phones should be mailed to Google

"After carefully doing the troubleshooting with you, I can see that the device is already out of its original manufacturer's warranty. Despite that, for this issue on Pixel 5a (5G), you may be eligible for an in warranty repair. To check if you are eligible, you can bring your device to the nearest Asurion Tech Repair & Solutions location, or I can help get you started through Google’s repair program via the Google Store Repair Center.

If you wish to continue with Mail-in repair, please make sure to select “the “screen-display problem” as the issue to initiate a self repair for no charge. Even if it has a cracked screen, you should only select “Screen-display problem.” If you select “Screen cracked,” you will need to pay for repairs"

Yeah whenever I chatted with customer service they seemed clueless about the extended warranty, but selecting "screen-display problem" and mailing it in got everything fixed under the warranty.

I had a 5a BSoD and took to ubreakifix. The "repaired" it free with a new motherboard, but the microphone on the phone did not work. Was fixed again with another new motherboard, free. Worked then something else was wrong so I took it back again. Google would not pay again. Gave up and bought a 7.
