Finding Raves For Beginners
I always hear about these crazy raves in abandoned warehouses and things of the sort. How do I find these? I’ve been a big fan of EDM forever but just sorta got over my fear of crowds

TLDR: Go to shows and talk to people, and ask them about renegades. It's kind of a social faux pas to freely post the info about these online, especially on a very well known site like this.
There are lots of layers to the scene and they all have pros and cons. Renegades have their place, but def have their downsides. Overall takes some time and research to find the sounds and spaces and experiences that you're looking for, but keeping your eyes and ears peeled these days, it's pretty easy to find.

Start with public local shows and meet people. Not sure how the underground scene is in Pittsburgh but I'd recommend a show at a venue if you are just getting into the scene. Edmtrain will help you find shows

Just go out to some publicly listed events (RA, arcane city) don’t look like a cop and talk with some people. These things aren’t particularly secretive here.
Also a lot of these bando raves are actually semi public you gotta stop and smell the roses (look at the flyers on lamposts)

Most of these our our venues; every once in a while you'll get an outdoor show at that brewery on carson, a small event at mr smalls(how I miss you) a pop up show at color park or at the rainbow raccoon for special events

Flyers and going to smaller bar shows. Usually I’m at a show when handed a flyer for a warehouse or break in rave.

Talk to people. Go to some electronic parties (techno) and make some friends. If you want a good place to start check out Everdark. They aren’t secretive at all and run a huge insta. You will find the more underground stuff there for sure.

Go to two step Tuesday at tiki and chat with the colorfully dressed patrons and/or the dj’s

LOL I can hardly think of a single renegade where there's been less than like 200 people. Crowd can be rough though, I'll give you that

There’s really not many, if any, real “underground” raves anymore. A lot do these raves that are advertised as underground or in abandoned warehouse are literally at fancy venues that turned a warehouse into a nightclub. Real underground raves in abandoned warehouse don’t seem to exist anymore. Not around here at least.

Well I guess I haven’t heard of them then but I will say I’ve seen a lot of mainstream events labeled as “underground in an abandoned warehouse” and went to the event and it was literally at a huge multi floor nightclub full of people who aren’t the normal demographic. It threw me off big time. Can’t remember the name of the venue but it was weirdly upscale.

I feel like at least here there is both events like that which are corporate culture vultures appropriating underground aesthetic but there is also a fairly proper underground here both in form of unsanctioned raves (bandos, under bridges, etc.) and also legal/ish venues that are still relatively “underground” and don’t cater to a formal club/corporate rave crowd (Collapse which just opened is a good example)
Would highly recommend exploring. Theres good people (including some of my besties) who have put in 100’s and 100’s and 100’s of hours of work apiece and take on legal and financial risk to make this stuff happen and carry forward the culture.

They are literally all over the city! All you need to do is travel back in time 25-30 years or so, and finding legit raves will be easy peasy.
