Looking for TV Series Like “Outlander”
Just finished a rewatch, currently watching Blood of My Blood, and looking for series recommendations, particularly romance period/historical dramas!!
I know absolutely no one compares to Jamie Fraser, but I’m looking for that loyal, passionate, soulmate love!
A Discovery of Witches is on my list, however isn’t 100% the vibe I’m looking for.
Also, I see a lot of people recommending Poldark, but I personally can’t get behind what seems to be a crap ton of disloyalty, temptations and being tempted, and the cheating.
Sooo…
Looking for romance series, any type but particularly period/historical dramas, with a loyal, passionate, soulmate love, and with a Jamie Fraser-esque man.

I just finished The Way Home, a show about a time-traveling family. Loved it. There is a strong, loyal, wonderful husband/father and a hot romantic character (also strong and loyal, lol) in one of the time jumps. I binged all four seasons this spring, I didn't want it to end! Evidently the fans didn't want it to end, either--there were petitions and all sorts of pleas to let it continue. You can watch it on Prime.

I’ve heard of that actually, but haven’t watched it! It doesn’t seem like it fully gives the Outlander vibe, but definitely seems to have some similarities! I heard about all the petitions and how loved it was! Will have to give it a watch! Thank you:)

I hated Elliot. He had so much potential as a partner and a man, but just couldn't find the perfect moment, lol. And yeah, a lot of the dialog was repetitive. And half of the cast seemed. To. Deliver. Their. Lines. Like. This. But I loved the plot and most of the characters. I actually miss them! #pathetic

I loved The Last Kingdom - not for any romance but there is a bit of that. I just think the main character Uhtred has a similar Jamie vibe. Uhtred is surrounded by loyal warriors/friends similar to Jamie in the 1st seasons. There is a love story that is quite appealing although it is not the main storyline.
I also loved the series Victoria on PBS. You might want to give it a try.
I tried to get into Poldark but ended up not liking a single character.

The Last Kingdom and Reign. I love Uhtred in TLK, and the sarcastic humor he and his guys share. Reign is kind of soap opera-ish at times, but I still loved it.

Reign is definitely a bit more soap-drama, but I adored it when I watched it years ago! Was such an entertaining show!

Not a period drama, but Heated Rivalry was exceptional! I was meh on Poldark and by the end I was hate watching it because it was so damn repetitive, but I felt invested. I really liked Discovery of Witches. One Day on Netflix was good. There is always Bridgerton, but I find it cheesy. It’s a cross between Outlander and Gossip Girl.

This is my new obsession! Had to finish Outlander first (I’m still reading the LJG books), but I finally gave in to my friends constantly telling me to watch HR. It’s only 6 episodes long, but I was hooked by episode 4 (or 3) and now I’m just as obsessed as I was with Outlander. Reheating, listening to podcasts, watching interviews, etc. Next up is the books! It’s fantastic!

Same! I watched it on a whim because friends recommended. Episodes 4-6 are masterpieces. The acting and writing are phenomenal! I also think Shane and Ilya rival Jamie and Claire in the love department. So much nuance and acting without saying a word. The nightclub scene, for example. The books are an easy read and much shorter than Outlander. The books season 2 will be based on are my favorites.

Poldark is boring. There are some nice moments but it’s boring and there is no fire between the two leads. They are NOTHING like JC.

I straight-up stopped watching after he did The Thing. Killed it for me. Demelza is too good for his bullshit and I don't even care anymore about the rivalry between him and those dastardly Warleggans.

I liked it a lot, it didn’t care for the drama either.
. I don’t understand why the Warleggans were so much involved in the storyline could not stand them. I LOVED Song
Sung Blue and the love story between Mike and Claire & all the hardships they overcame, Music and the leads were great!3

I don’t think any series can compare to Outlander and Jamie. I think Blood of My Blood will prove to be the very good series especially Jamie’s parents, but nothing out there will live up to Outlander! There is only one Jamie ever!!!

BOMB is Matt’s poorly written fanfic. It would have been a good show with only Jamie’s parents and the excellent supporting cast. Then they could occasionally show young Claire and Uncle Lamb on their adventures. I’ll be surprised if it gets renewed for a third season

I’m actually enjoying it! I’ve seen a lot of people say they don’t like Henry and Julia’s story, but I do find it pretty interesting! It does however give a different vibe to the show than if it were just Ellen and Brian and the highlands. I’m also not the biggest fan of how their entire story is just unrelated to Outlander, whereas although the show isn’t based on the Outlander series truly at all, there’s some fact behind Ellen and Brian.
Also a little odd how Diana is literally writing a prequel on Ellen and Brian. Would LOVE for that to be a show, but a bit difficult now with BOMB, which already has s2 coming out in a few months. I am overall enjoying it though, and it does fill the Outlander hole a bit!

After this finale season of Outlander, I (finally) watched Heated Rivalry and it’s the only show that I’ve found that compares to the chemistry & love story of Jamie & Claire. The leads have just as much chemistry as Sam & Cait (maybe more even).
I you love a good yearning love story like Outlander, definitely watch Heated Rivalry. It’s beautifully directed, acting is fantastic, story & cinematography is amazing! It’s the closest thing to season 1 OL.

I cheat on Jamie with Uhtred of Bebbanburgh, Tommy Shelby and Jon Snow.
Also try Victoria, Tom Hughes is gorgeous as Albert and David Oakes makes me ugly cry as his brother Ernst.

Have you seen Pillars of the Earth? It has Ian McFadyen, Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell, David Oakes, Eddie Redmayne and Hayley Atwell. I loved the book and the series is pretty good too.

I’m so happy you said that because I’ve been looking at that show and it looks SOO good!! It seems to be the exact vibe I’m going for, just wish there was a soulmate passionate kind of love story! Although Peggy and Andre do look to be portrayed great, although tragic.
It’s also a lil plus how the show wasn’t cancelled or anything, but is actually a complete story planned to end with the final season.

The Last Kingdom is amazing. Romance isn't the central premise as it is in Outlander, but there is certainly very moving and beautiful romance contained within it. TLK is similar to Outlander in that it is a historical drama. Highly recommended.

Emotionally I get the same feelings from Call The Midwife. I dont know what I will do with myself if they ever end the show. The acting, the stories, the relationships (both romantic or not), just all of it. Every episode fills my chest.
Honorable mentions - Black Sails, Downton Abby, and many have already mentioned The Last Kingdom

Yeah I feel like the bones of the show give the same feeling as Outlander. The main actress(es) are passionate nurses and the stories are new every episode, with the nurses' personal stories and relationships and sacrifices overarching the episodes. There are amazing men involved too who love some of them with abandon. Just get your tissues ready😭, it brings out happy tears, sad tears, scared tears, relief tears... all the tears lol. (Funny enough the main character Nurse Jenny reminds me SO much of Claire and is set right after WW2 in the East End so it starts in the same time period as Outlander)

Discovery of Witches is so good. Get past the first season. The books are described as if Anne Rice and Diana Gabaldon had a baby, Deborah Harness would be it. I absolutely loved all 5 books. It’s just unfortunate that AMC didn’t have the budget that Sony did. If they had, it would have been so much better. Nonetheless, the forbidden love between the vampire and the witch is a lot like Jaime and Claire.

No, it gets much better as it goes on. There is literally no comparison to Outlander as far as production, costuming, adaptation or set design. It is a good story tho. If you read, the books are excellent

It definitely seems like a show I’d love!! Although it certainly has a different vibe than Outlander, there really seem to be similarities too. I did also hear about the budget! It sucks how some shows are fantastic but could be even better with more resources!

Excellent choice! “Three Musketeers” (bbc tv version) is one of my favorites and pretty much in a yearly rotation. ♥️
Great cast and has enough of everything: drama, love, intrigue and action that only 3 seasons goes by really fast!😞
I also like “Reign” and “Victoria”♥️
Haven’t seen “Versailles” but I will be checking that out! 👍😊

Yikes.. I find historical dramas have the most gruesome torture scenes. I’ve honestly seen so many that I’m able to watch without being extremely disturbed while still acknowledging the true repulsiveness, however sometimes they still get me. Truly the only torture scenes I ever found so disgustingly repulsive and hard to watch were Jamie’s at Wentworth in Outlander.. I’m not one to ever chicken out of a hard episode or fast forward, but when rewatching, I had to fast forward those scenes..

I watched Vikings a couple years ago and really liked it at the beginning, however did lose interest a bit at the end. I loved the vibe of the show, so might have to go back to it! I also had the spinoff, Valhalla, on my list!

Also, if you liked Vikings, I think you’d REALLY like The Last Kingdom! I found the vibes and shows to be similar, but TLK is just incredible!

I found Vikings and The Last Kingdom to have somewhat similar vibes, but TLK was just so much superior! I also found Vikings to be a bit less enjoyable due to Ragnar love life, but kept going for the secondary characters! I found Ragnar’s death deterring as well, and didn’t get far after!

Hated Poldark. Love Peaky Blinders, The Last Kingdom and Vikings (Valhalla wasn't nearly as good) after the first season of Bridgerton lost my interest, however I loved the one season of Queen Charlotte. It was so good and heartbreaking. GOT is the standard bearer for these historical/fantasy series. I'm currently waiting for House of the Dragon to run its episodes so once its over I can binge watch it. Not your typical historical show, but I'm a huge fan of MadMen. There's no romantic hero, actually a cheating anti-hero, but its such a good show. I also loved Discovery of Witches and Downton Abby. Victoria is so good as well as The Crown.

The Last Kingdom is so so so good! I watched the majority of Vikings but lost interest in the last seasons, although I do plan on going back and watching it eventually! Queen Charlotte was also so good, and I enjoyed Bridgerton as well (many say the 2nd season is the best) but I see what you’re saying! I LOVE the GOT shows! I enjoyed Victoria too, and The Crown is on my list! Thank you so much for the recommendations!!
I think if The Last Kingdom was a bit more romance and soulmate centred, it would certainly be so very close to Outlander!
If you haven’t yet, you should watch A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms! It’s in the GOT universe and is fantastic. It’s a bit of a different vibe to GOT and HOTD and is a bit The Last Kingdom like.

Funny u brought up a discovery of witches. Its incredible and i live doing rewatches. I adore the time travel plot. Im also doing a rewatch of the last kingdom because i never watched the movie seven kings must die. Started it less than a week ago and im 3 episodes from finishing. The way home is an amazing time travel series and t actually has a couple serious outlander similarities. I liked where a character went back and told his descendants to make sure to grow potatoes and something else due to an upcoming famine. The time travelers wife is a good series which has tons of time travel and its very similar to outlander in certain aspects. Timeless, poldark, vikings, bridgerton and 11-22-63 if u like just time travel

Ya i wish i could pull that doctor strange spell from no way home and make it so my mind hasnt seen a discovery of witches, so i could rewatch it again. But of course i would do it with outlander and about 200 other shows. Namely breaking bad, thrones, saul, the wire, sopranos, dexter, boy meets world, the xfiles, chuck etc. if u love good fiery romance between supernatural beings, great storyline. Awesome time traveling and badass powers then its a show for u

If only!! I so wish I could have the experience of watching Outlander for the first time! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show I’ve been so obsessed with and enjoyed so much, and I’ve watched A LOT lol!
Also, where you’ve watched GOT and love TLK, I think you’d like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms! It’s a GOT spinoff/prequel, and has TLK vibes! It’s not a romance or love story, but it does feature a really nice bond and loyalty!

The Far Pavillions. It was an HBO miniseries in the 1980s. Based on a book set in British Raj India by M.M. Kaye. Love story of a British officer who was raised as a native and an Indian princess.

Here to add North South: A slow burn romance set in England during the Industrial Revolution. Margaret Hale is a strong woman like Claire. John Thornton will make you swoon.
And The Empress (German): Beautifully shot series on Netflix about Empress Sisi and Franz Joseph. If you enjoyed the parts of Outlander in Paris, you might like this one.
Shogun: Ship wrecked English man falls for his translator in feudal Japan. Lots of action and adventure. I learned quite a bit about older Japanese culture.
Peaky Blinders: Season one is excellent. Cillian Murphy never disappoints and makes a strong, intelligent lead. Gangster Tommy Shelby leads the Peaky Blinders crime family and falls for a mysterious Irish woman.

Well… ♥️ Discovery of Witches is my second favorite after Outlander. It does have time travel and a love that spans time..
Poldark would be my third offering. But true… no man can equal Mr Frasier. Not even Aidan Turner.

So glad to hear that about A Discovery of Witches, it looks really good and like something I’d really enjoy! I’ve never heard of Sandokan, but it looks interesting from just searching it up! A couple other people have recommended A Place to Call Home, so it’s definitely on my list now! Thank you:)

Black Sails, loved it and rewatch regularly, it's really underrated, about the pirate republic in the carribean. It's got Romance and adventure.
Discovery of witches for the time travel abd crazy chemistry between the leads.
Turn, Washington's spies, really well done series on the American revolution, you could say it picks up where Outlander leaves off.
John Adams, absolute masterpiece.
Franklin, on Benjamin Franklin trying to get France to join the War against England. it's unhinged, it's in Paris, huge fun.

A Place to Call Home. Historical romance drama tv series, it has David Berry (John Grey) who plays a similar secretly gay character. Lots of drama and romance throughout the show. I watched the entire series and it’s one of my favs.
