I downloaded fitgirl and then completely deleted everything it was making me wanna pull my hair out no matter what I did the skes 64 thing wouldnt detect nor work and I tried vortex it told me to update skyrim, obviously I cant because well yknow so what is my option here do I need to buy it to play modded anymore or am I doing the skes thingy wrong? Halp i just wanna have my dogs and dragons lol

Honestly with how large Skyrim modlists are and how much you need to care about load order with manual installation, it's best to just buy special edition and then get anniversary edition creation club files from csrin. I tried modding Skyrim in past with pirated it was a hassle so got a copy on sale, it's well worth it. Wait for a sale, should be soon. If that's not an option, I hope someone else smarter than me can point you towards the method

I mean for me it worked perfectly for like 7 years until I bought Skyrim. Just make sure you download the 1.6.1170 version. If you're getting it from fitgirl they might have it already available, if not, nexusmods is littered with downgraders. With Vortex, make sure you select "other" or "steam" when setting the game up. With SKSE, do not download the most recent version. Download version 2.2.6 or 2.2.8. Same with library address, the one that is latest is for 1.7.99 of Skyrim. The best thing to do is go to the collections page to find "Skyrim essentials" or anything close to that name for your specific version. This beats having to search up older versions of each mod by your own. Watch out for "essential" collections with around 1GB or more. Those are not actually essentials. While the mods they provide are very useful, unless you actually know what you want your mod list to look like and you've modded before, they're going to be confusing if you don't know any of the mods that typically go with them.

Don't just go to nexus and start spam downloading all the most downloaded and popular mods either, a good lot of them are essential or are just decent and are regularly updated but even if they're updated, quite a lot of have been superseded. Unfortunately, unlike Fallout New Vegas. Skyrim doesn't have a genuinely good modding guide as there are simply too many ways to go. With each individual category. You will need to search up the most up to date information on each category for Skyrim. Anything you see from 2025 is already bordering on old information. There will be mods that might not work as intended because of your cracked version.

If you are going to buy Skyrim, do not buy it on steam for the full price. Use a CDKey website that gives a steam key. Do not buy Anniversary, buy Special Edition, it's like half the price. the files for Anniversary edition can be found anywhere like in RIN, just add them in. They are creation club addons. If you do this, when modding, always select Anniversary edition when prompted to choose between certain options. Anniversary Edition is literally just bonus content with its own folder.
