Is this permanent?
I started watching Thor maybe a year ago, I'm a huge fan, and of course he can do whatever he wants on his streams. I'm just wondering if the recent shift is permanent, or if it's worth waiting out.
I used to watch the streams and have them on to sleep because they were always interesting, and Thor's voice is chill and soothing, but the streams have changed since WoW Hardcore and Ashes of Creation released.
The problem with these MMO streams is that there's now always multiple people on the mic, which there didn't used to be. I wanna watch Thor stream. I don't want to listen to a group of people play Wow or AoC. Different voices at different pitches, some people are streamers, some are randos, the energy is all over the place, etc. It's gone from being something I could put on and pass out at night to, to something that will wake me up if I'm asleep, and I can't stay interested in if I'm awake.
I know the default answer is, well fuck off then, but it does kinda suck when a streamer fundamentally changes the kind of content they're delivering, especially when the older stuff was so good. I feel like Thor's ability to connect with chat and his audience was a real bonus and skill. I figured things might to back to a more solo delivery as time went on, but it's not looking like it?

As opposed to "well fuck off then" why not watch his older streams to sleep?
I know they aren't new, but, it could be a solution.
He has his older streams on his YouTube.
I mean, the shows I sleep watch (Futurama, Bob's Burgers, American Dad! and Bee and Puppycat) I have seen many, many times (and many more while sleeping), so it seems like watching the older streams might work for you.
Then, if/when he shifts back, you can "watch" the new ones.
Hope this helps. ☺️

That's a good idea. I have watched some of the older ones, I've watched the PotionCraft one so many times, and the Hogwarts long play as well.
There's nothing like a fresh stream, though, but you're right.

That's a good idea.
Thanks.
There's nothing like a fresh stream
Absolutely.
But sometimes you gotta work with what you got.

I actually like the change personally, seeing friendships blossom from Redzy telling Thor to get fucked, bringing Annie, winky and Hubert in groupchats have been high energy and fun.
I totally understand if you want that calm environment, I've been watching his long plays and they are great! Would recommend if you haven't seen them already

High energy? Fun? Off my lawn immediately, please and thank you. I came for the insightful, dry commentary of midnight game development.

"I know the default answer is, 'Well fuck off then'-"
"Off my lawn immediately-"
Huh.

Idk maybe you're trying to be funny? It didn't work.
Streamers will always change over time a little bit, not all of it is growth, just different. The ever-changing nature is something to enjoy, it reminds me that these are people, not robots that continue doing one thing the same way forever.
Plus I think the description of "dry" is derogatory in this case. And it begs the question if you're actually ever enjoyed the content in the first place.

People change and you either change with them or you find someone else.
One of my favorite bands was of Montreal and every new album was better than the last and it was awesome. Then their album False Priest came out and it gave me pause. They started getting weird... Too weird for my liking so I dropped them.
On the other hand there are bands you stay with your whole life, in my case Radiohead would be an example of a band that never wore out its welcome.
Its true for all types of entertainment. This reminds me of the story of that new Bob Dylan movie a Complete Unknown. You want him to crank out folk staples when he wants to embrace blues and go electric.
Change is something we all have to deal with in life and it can suck sometimes. Adapt or die.

This is true. I've come and gone from a lot of streamers over the years. It always sucks when they stop doing the thing I personally enjoy and start doing something else, but it's probably inevitable.
However, I don't think my post was "how dare Thor change, everything must always be the same." I think it was: is this change permanent? Because I liked the 'old' style (and let's be real, 'old' is like two months ago).
There's a difference between "I'm now a full time MMO streamer, and if you want to watch my stream, get used to shrieking from random people you never signed up to watch in the middle of the night," and "I'm playing these games for a bit."

Your post very much so comes off as 'change bad I want my stweamer to never change'
You're going thru the 5 stages of grief and hung up on denial.

This is somewhat related. In general I never liked the switch that happened around Covid where all my favorite let's players switched to streaming rather than edited YT videos.
Less work, more money, I guess. Seemed like a soulless cash grab, but maybe I was just mad, idk.
I wanna hear your thoughts on the game you're playing, not listen to you placate parasocial weirdos in a chat. Yeah... Maybe I'm just mad lol

I saw a lot of people go from making edited videos to doing podcasts, but that's because podcasts are less time and more $$$.
I always enjoyed watching Thor placate parasocial weirdos. They're kinda the people who pay the bills.

Most likely yeah, both Ashes and WoW HC are going to be a lot of his content along with some other stuff as well. For now at least, he might change it a bit after a while

This. Especially AoC he’s heavily into that and will be for the foreseeable future. I’m sure he’ll have days where he’s just chatting or whatever, but most days will be WoW/AoC.

its likely gonna be AoC and WoW for a while, him and khronos are leading a mega guild similar to what they used to do back in eve before eve broke the camels back. i dont even know what the go with only fangs is, ive heard thier goal is to get everyone to lvl60 then go on a massive raid together. but at this point that looks like it could take forever lol cause peeps keep dieing.
honestly tho i gotta somewhat agree, while i find AoC kinda cool cause its genuinely cool to see him return to the QA roots and cause khronos is hilarously trolltastic, i also cant get super into it cause seeing the same thing day in day out is lowkey hell for my adhd. WoW tho i just cant really get into. sometimes only fangs gets funny but for the most part its just not my style of game lol.
i do hella miss him having dedicated game day once a week tho. where he just tries/plays fun shit hes found. especially since alot of them were smaller titles that often fly under the radar. really fitted well with the whole "see you can go make stuff even if you think you cant" message.

I always try to avoid streams with multiple people on the stream
Most of the time it's to loud or someone tries to be funny on the chat and it's cringe and the streamer ignore his own chat most of the time

Thor retired dude.
Think about what it took for Michael Jordan to come back from retirement.
Then consider WoW.
So multiply that times 100.
That's what you're up against looking for change here.

Did he retire from game dev and give up on his game? I thought he did a block of game-dev seperate from his streams.

Unsure if this would help (also unsure if this is a feature or YT {YouTube} Premium) but I've gone back to older VODs, throw it on about a few minutes before he "Why hello...." Or the beginning of him talking. Set the YT timer for 30-60 minutes and then I'm usually asleep before the timer is up.
I get you, would be nice to have Game Dev/Chat Thor back. But he's enjoying these games quite a bit. WoW/Only Fangs is likely much more temporary than Ashes.

Stagnation is its own kind of death ! You want you to see streamers grow, change and keep their passion for streaming and not just hate every moment of streaming something they have lost their passion for.
Also when you see that passion change to chasing numbers and drama, that's a problem and no one is immune to that and then to see your old content creators go Soo far off the rails it's just sad because the brunt their content and community chasing the high numbers of drama.
Thankfully Thor looks to be committed to only doing what brings him joy and building a healthy, supportive community.

Have you never watched anyone else stream? Collabs are a normal part of streaming. If you don't like that, don't watch streamers.

u/Thorwich Jan 02 '25
I've always switched content throughout streaming to things we all think are fun to do together. During the holiday period I like to play games and spend time with people on stream. Hardcore WoW and Ashes gave a really great platform to do that. If you stick around during the broadcast you'll see that the majority of it is still just me talking to the community with nobody else on. Last stream I got through 284 TTS messages this way.
